    She’s shared in interviews that most of the people who come to her where we have that “how’d you let it get so bad” reaction wait so long because of cost. She said most of it isn’t covered by insurance because it’s “cosmetic”, and that they have to wait for lab results. So basically some people are hoping it IS cancer so their insurance will kick in.

I had a doctor yell at me that nothing was wrong with me after my hair started falling out in my hands … turned out I have hashimotos and my thyroid was all fuckered. About a year later I went in to see a specialist about something unrelated because I kept getting hives all over my face for no reason and patch testing said I wasn’t allergic to anything. Literally had over 200 photos of different times this happened over a months time and he said “well do you have one (hives) right now?”… then told me it wasn’t possible and that I’ll never know why this happens

Finally, my parents sent him (with Mom) to an NIH hospital, hundreds of miles away, near Washington, DC. He had a very rare condition, McArdle Disease, very few cases on record at the time. I have several chronic illnesses and I’ve had to transfer between several doctor’s offices, deteriorating in health the whole time, because there is so much discrimination of different types in the medical community. And I’m not even talking about just sexism or racism (though that’s more rampant than people think too), they also discriminate based on your medical conditions, your medications, the way you handle or don’t handle pain, etc. It has gotten to the point I refuse to go to the emergency department here after I have gone there in so much pain I was crying and ended up passing out from the pain on the floor, in my own vomit, and apparently the nurse just laughed and said I was faking it, and the doctor said I was being hysterical, not to mention that every time I’ve gone there they accuse me of being an addict and pill seeker, no matter how much pain I am in. They also forced my mom to walk on a broken leg because they claimed it wasn’t actually broken. It took THREE shift changes for someone to actually get a scan and see that the bones were shattered. Her kids are now helping her. She said thank you to us for helping her clean her old house. I live in it but it was messy. Also, that finally her kids notice her again. It took us to get her help from her kids. She got to a bad state due to her kids leaving one by one. No communication happened. Due to her own personal reasons. It was not until my mom aunt and their kids taking her in. That something wrong was found out. The messy house was a clue. My Cousin, my aunt's son was stubborn at first. It was not until me and my bro. his 2 young Cousins said were disappointed. His wife said they should be. She's our aunt even though my Uncle divorced her. She family😄 She worked as a florist. Thank you for telling about the woman with breast cancer who would not see the doctor until it was so necrotic, that it smelled awful. I remember a similar case in the 1980's. The woman had refused so long to seek help for a breast mass, that it weighed in at 56 pounds. The odor was so overwhelming that her surgery was done on a weekend when the recovery room might be empty. She lived for nearly one year with vigorous chemotherapy and radiation.

    Everyone talking about how financially life destroying a serious diagnosis can be for the poor in the US is absolutely correct, however in context that is clearly not what his phobia is. He is very clearly associating doctors’ offices with infection and death.
    It is also generally the case on shows like this that he is getting pro Bono treatment in return for the release of having his case on the show.

    • @Chxlive
      @Chxlive 2 года назад +47

      I agree; his concern was communicable disease (plague). When was the original episode filmed? During the time of COVID? I imagine that might have really amped up any lingering germophobia he might have been harboring. But even with the "carrot" of getting the treatment for free, he *still* had to muster up the courage to walk in there, get examined, and start the treatment - at any time during that process, he could have panicked and bolted. But he didn't! He really strikes me as a sweet, sweet man - a gentle soul who perhaps hasn't received as much kindness in life as some others have.

      @Pat Mckinnon The "carrot" is a metaphor for an attractive gift or an incentive Like dangling a carrot in front of a donkey or animal, it is going to lure it in.
      The incentive or gift, the "carrot" in this story is the free medical care.
      The patient was attracted to the free medical care and it was the incentive he needed to get treatment.

      i've seen this episode where his story came on, and yes, he was very much afraid of getting sick from being in a doctor's office. from what i remember, he had to step out of the waiting room because he heard people coughing and sneezing and it freaked him out that he was going to catch some kind of disease. luckily the woman who was with him calmed him down enough to get him to return to the waiting room so he could meet with Dr. Lee

    It was pretty heart wrenching when he was talking about his fear of doctors/ doctors offices. My father has been like that ever since I can remember and he refused to go in for any type of check ups or even go to a dentist. Finally he went in when I was about 15 I want to say at that point he hadn't been to a doctor in nearly 20 years. He went in because we kept telling him something seemed wrong and it took him a year of feeling awful to convince himself in. It turns out due to alcohol abuse and years of chewing Tabaco he had cancer that was growing in his esophagus. Since then its been treated and he has been cancer free for about 2 years now and even had bariatric surgery. It's so hard when people are afraid to make a medical appointment. I've very proud of him for going in despite his fears.
