where's the Metal Zone?
All the gain. No mids.
SLAYYAARRRGGHH
+Badass Guitar Dude well I mean slayer actually uses a lot of mids
+Miles Hodges yeah true
Max Taal
In fact it's in the trash bin zone.
I'm a total pedal-phile. Love pedals!
+Rudy Ayoub No
+Blkjakk yes
That just sounds wrong.
I support you, but rethink the name
@@blkjakk Damn rudy was commenting four years ago?
Unless I'm more colorblind than I thought, I'm fairly certain that the FL9 isn't orange...
+HeadOfBucket I wanted to see if anyone was paying attention.
You win the prize
True!
+James S haha dude you're colorblind, it's violet. Huge difference!
+Chinchillupa Guy its yellow
***** that's your opinion bro
Try putting the HOF after de Carbon Copy, sounds cleaner and more natural, reverb should be the last thing in the chain as a natural reverb takes everything out of your amp and makes it resonate.
Collin has said before that he usually prefers delay after reverb which he knows is a little against the norm
A point to consider in the "get your sound from your amp and guitar" is that when touring, there are backline amps to deal with. Vastly different styles of amps, wattages etc. Having a few options when it comes to gain, eq etc. becomes more of an urgent need.
Collin hits the nail on the head with regard to patch cables. Whilst everybody seems to be raving over all the nice and fancy lookin "solderless" cables, nothing beats a properly soldered quality cable. I have used the solderless cables some time ago but gone back to properly soldered quality cables. Much more reliable!
Great video as always, and I agree with all your choices! Except cable type. In 1980 I got my first amp, and I wanted the most high end cable available. They sold me the stuff that later became named George L's. I had that cable for 10 years no problems. Whenever I had to use someone else's cable it sounded horrible, dull, and dark. But that one 20' cable disappeared and I went back to regular self soldered cables. Got away from those solder-less cables because they became expensive, I couldn't afford them for my racks and pedals. After many years of soldered cable, about 7 years ago I decided to go with them for my rack, and what a difference. The tone just is better. It is VERY easy to notice the difference. I even experimented by surprising the band without telling them of redoing my pedalboard setup. So without a word, I shit you not- that night 2 of them asked me what I did different because it sounds so good. I'm never going back. I'm in NY, and all the cats here have the same cables. We all love 'em. When you do the cable ends properly, there's never a problem. Gig heavily and no issues. Easy to install and if I ever need to trouble shoot at a gig (never needed to yet)
Great run through Colin! That yellow FL9 has got to have some good stories.
yes finally a rundown of your pedalboard how did you know that would be my next question.... Thanks again for the education and keep up the good work Collin!
Hi Colin, Great Video, nice to see what use, Thank you👍👍👍.
Take care,
Melbourne, Australia.
"Learn to solder". Save money by doing your own simple repairs, gain knowledge, and ensure the quality is good by doing it yourself. That's good advice right there.
Do you think you could do a soldering lesson?
^^
It's actually really easy. Solder flows towards heat, tin the connections you're making, and if you heat the connections you should be able to solder no problem. Use Rosin core solder, not acid flux, 60/40 solder is the go to.
As far as wattage, anything between 15-35W is what's used for guitars and pedals.
Just as I was looking into pedalboards, this shows up in my feed! Awesome

you've done a vid explaining the difference between overdrive, distortion and fuzz. Now you should do the difference between Phaser, Flanger and Chorus
He's right about the tu2 and cheap power supplies ruining tone. Change yours out and see!! Loving the approach.
I have never seen anyone with such a strong opinion about solder-less cables 6:57
I have never had any issues with solder-less cables. Simple logic, if they didn't work the big companies couldn't sell them without bad press. Like any cable you just need to test as you go. Some people are just very old school I guess.
The only thing I don't like about pedal train boards, is that I prefer to keep them in a hard case. I had somebody drop a cab on my custom pedal train style board, in a real pedal train bag, and crushed the switch to my tuner. So for safe keeping, I use a hard case with foam on all sides!
interesting choices. currently I'm running a crybaby wah into a ibanez ts9 into the front of a marshall jcm2000 dsl 50 with a mxr ZW chorus and carbon copy into the fx loop!
Well I learned a lot from this one! The Irish accent makes the word “yellow” sound like “orange” so I just need to pay attention to that if I ever go there. Haha I’m just messing around, I love you videos bro! Thanks for all the information!
I'm using the SIS's by Evidence Audio cables. They're definetly not failed cables waiting to happen as they've been on my board for 2 years and the some of the artists that use them could afford every technician in the world... definetly roadworthy and high-quality.
I get what you mean about your view on pedals, but I typically use my amp as a pedal platform that I like and use dirt and modulation for the majority of my sound. Keep on keeping on! Love the vids!
Well sir, I get my main tone from a wampler pinnacle distortion, and it is glorious!
I agree with you on the solderless cables. I know how to solder, but I'm also lazy. So, I went with a pack of the Lava cables; they didn't last 6 months. Maybe I just suck at installing them, but I know a soldered connection won't come undone so easily.
Pedals are love, pedals are life
Very nice and simple set-up. I admire your DIY ethic towards all of your gear as well. I've always wondered what was up with the in/out thing on tuners, thats good to know!
finally a rundown
I looked down at my Carbon Copy when I saw you had one, and all of the knobs were set the same. I guess great minds think alike.
As much as I agree with you saying that if you don't like the amp on its own then All the pedals in the world won't fix that, what's mainly due to the amps mid voicing and character.
I do however feel that's there's nothing wrong with having some pedals constantly on for tone shaping.
Mainly thinking of overdrives, I love the sound of my evh Stealth, but I very rarely use the dirty channels with one if my drives on, the only time I do is for softer riffs to roll off the volume.
I use my drives as a tone shaping tool, a Maxon as a clean boost for tight rhythms and an amptweaker tightdrive pro for screaming leads.
Also Reverbs, some people like my brother always have a Reverb on for a natural feel. Same with delay, i always have a delay on when playing cleans.
So as much as I love my evh I always have 2 pedals on for my cleans (delay and Reverb) and 3 pedals for my Dirty (drive, gate and Reverb).
I personally don't think there's anything wrong with that.
I think you should definitely get a guitar and amp that gives you a sound you are happy... but I don't think there is anything wrong with getting most of your sound from your board. There are a lot of players that use predominantly clean sounding amps and get the rest of their tone from their pedals. Of course this is genre dependent a bit as well, but it is just a different approach. Overall cool video though and I like the points about the buffers and them being both ibanez
I'm thinking of buying a HOF Mini as my reverb pedal. They look really good
I have one myself on my pedal board. Sounds good and the tone print is very useful. =)
I see all of these custom boards on Facebook with 20 pedals on them and can't understand why would you need so many? Surely too many takes away something from your basic sound? When I was a pro, I had a ts-9 (then a homemade treble booster) with a boss chorus, an old delay and reverb into the loop of my dsl 2000. That was more than enough and the sound was epic!
I get a lot of tone from my TC Electronic Booster / Line Driver. Without it my tone is generic Marshall low gain. With it.. massive metal.
were do you get the flat jacks for your cables
been watching your videos for a while. you sound knowledgeable dude. thanks for the tips
I'm trying to learn about pedals and what type of effects I want. I found this to be very helpful... thx
Hey man, good choice of pedals! I run a TS9 tube screamer into an ENGL modern rock pre-amp then through the front of a Vox AC30. The TS9 seems to get me pretty close to my favourite lead tone with whatever amp I plug into, they're good ae! Thanks for showing us your pedals!
+CSGuitars Thank you for doing this video, really insightful!
That flanger looks like Del Boy's van.
sonic research turbo tuner. no contrast issues with that, bloody fast too.
+1 on learning to solder. Every guitarist needs to know how.
Nice Disposable shirt, first thing I noticed! I though I'd seen all of your videos, but I must have missed the Flanger one.
+EsotericFallacies The guy who designed that t-shirt is a total legend
+CSGuitars "...3 colour print. Art designed by Colin Scott." Aaaah that guy. Think he's a bit of a tit really ;)
I got rid of all my pedals.....even my Boss DD-2 !!!! for a Mooer ge-200 and I think I'm OK with it so far !!!!
Colin, I actually have my Boss SD1 on pretty much all of the time with the level maxed and the gain on zero. It gives you a hotter signal into the front of the amp and gives you some compression too to stop it getting flubby when you chug.
JDODify I can’t believe you’ve gone four years without someone making a shady comment about 'it' going flubby in the middle of a chug...
Personally I think that what's great to have is a tube screamer for general distortion and kinda leave it on for distortion I'm songs that need clean tones or just leave it on and separately have a either distortion or overdrive pedal with not much distortion or overdrive but one is quite loud so you use that for solos so then the tube screamer makes part of your tone and then have amp distortion to a point where turning all other distortions of will leave it quite week and if you lick out notes it will sound clean
That noise at the end was hysterical lol
Any advice for making your own patch cables?
It's funny. The way you pronounce while like chwile. Reminds me of Stewie from Family Guy and the "chwhip". :D
no eq pedal? eq pedals relay help in different environment because different room has different absorption of frequencies plus your amp eq is after the distortion. with fuzz I found out if cut 100 hz and below I get nice fuzz tone that has more mids which that my amp could not do because the eq is after distortion.
I'm surprised to see your reverb before your delay. It's making it as if you're echoing the room the pedal creates; as opposed to putting the echoes of the delay within the room.
Hey brother can you express your feelings over multi effects pedalboards?
Haha 3:) we have the Same Amp!!! 333XL Infinium
great video man!
the buffer on the boss was a good thing...
Make a video stating your opinion on noise gates
It's sad they don't make the Polytune 2 Blacklight anymore.
Disposable shirt, friends of mine that i've played with many times. :)
I'm thinking of getting a pedal train classic 2 but all I have at the moment is a cry baby wah a Moore baby tuner a Ibanez ts9 and a 3 channel blackstar foot switch and I will be getting a isp decimator soon is it worth getting a pedal board that size or should I get something around that size that you use
Hi Colin. What make cables are you using to make your cables? I've Decided it is time to make my own for my pedalboard to make it look much nicer as it's a little messy with the pre made patch cables! Also would you be able to tell me where you buy them to. I've been looking around then internet but not sure which brand and what exactly to look for in the cables to know which is the best to buy. Thanks in advance.
You should totally start selling those sweet patch cables on your site
Do/Have you use(d) a pedal-based wireless system? What was it, how much did it cost, and would you recommend it?
How come you've put your reverb before your delay? I would have thought it'd be a lot smoother sounding to put it at the back so if you turn off your delay you don't kill the reverb trails?
you put the reverb into the delay? interesting.
Hey all I just graduated from a boss metal zone to a Bugera 6262. I've been watching yours and others videos on Bugera 333 and everyone says they're using the crunch channel, is this in top of the screamer? Or would the lead channel get similar results without a screamer?
im planning to buy pitch shifter and harmonist pedal. in what order shall i put them?
where are some places to find spools of cable and those pancake jacks?
Nice board
Just so you know...the Carbon Copy is NOT true bypass, test it out by unplugging the power from it and the sound won;t go through, otherwise great video Collin!
It is true bypass, according to the designer of the pedal, Jeorge Tripps.
To quote him directly, "As you can see... when the unit is in bypass... the input jack goes to the output jack...WITH NO CIRCUIT CONNECTED TO IT!
That's called True Bypass...True Hardwire Bypass... or whatever the hell you want to call it."
Yes, it is true bypass.
Weird ...how come that and the other MXR pedals I have don't let any signal through when the power is disconnected?
Dunlop/MXR is fickle, anything labeled with "True Hardware Bypass," is basically what true bypass is, and "True Hardwired Bypass," is a buffered bypass.
Don't ask me why they decided to do that, but that's the way it is.
I have the delay and it sounds good, and that should be the deciding factor though.
How do you attach your pedals to the board? I have the same pedal board as you, and have been having problems with the Velcro that it came with; especially with the tube screamer. Thx
Hi Colin. I'm using a 9V 3-Ampere (laptop-like power supply) to power my pedals. I don't have any problem yet. Should I be worried?
0:22 ... but you said not to rely on the gain on the amp
Hey man! You should check out Electromagnetic Witchcraft's stuff.
They have some really, really unique pedals.
All hand-built and whatnot.
Where do you buy the parts for making your own pancake patch cables? Cool videos btw
3:22 seems like you took a knob out of the hm-2.
At 3:06, he says '...orange box...' when referring to the Ibanez FL-9... Its Yellow... Right? My eyes are normal, right?
yes you're fine
Hell yeah!
Unless I've not seen a vid yet, what's your view on multi effect pedals.... I use a Line 6 POD 2.0 with a channel switcher pedal. Should I just get my coat and leave?
Thankyou Colin for such a great explanation. im really looking at my rig in a different way.
simple seems like the key and im lucky with my guitar and amp for tone.
Im using amphenol cables for the most part and have fender minis on the pedal rack.. im of a mind now to make or at least buy some custom links for my board. .. another question perhaps? both my amps have tube effect loops and im wondering how to best dedicate that to a 2 set off rack just for reverb and delay.. any thoughts appreciated. cheers !
Doesn't the carbon copy suck out all highs from your crunch channel?
great video. I was wondering which connectors you are using for the patch cables? I'm in the UK so can probably get the same ones!
Nice one! Can you please tell me what happens when you have 3 buffered pedals out of 12 pedals total?
Hi Colin, just wondered if you sold your patch cables. The design seems pretty handy.
interesting, i dont find ibanez buffers to be all that good
Oh yay, more content 😂
+Luke Mcfarlane But Will It Shred ?
+Gregg Smith 3/10 too many strings, needs more .70 gauge
U have a forbidden planet poster - do u live in NYC?
But where does the fuzz go?
*runs distortion pedals thru solidstate amp that already has a decent cruch channel*
I know that it's unnecessary, but I'm just lazy xD (I feel like the pedal gives a better tone anyway).
Also, death to true bypass! Literally all of my pedals with the exception of a ditto looper are buffered bypass. Besides, any tonesucking from pedals can easily be compensated for using the settings on the amp.
Also, I'm an intermediate guitarist looking to get into more pedals. I currently own:
Boss Super Chorus CH-1
Boss Reverb RV-6
Boss Distortion DS-1
Fulltone OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Drive)
TC Electronic Ditto Looper
Any recommendations in terms of pedals i should look to purchase?
would you put the noise gate in the FX loop?
So that power supply is good. But is Visual Sound 1spot a good alternative to that?
No, unless you get their new 1Spot Pro isolated output power supply. If you just get a regular $20 one spot and daisy chain a bunch of pedals together, you're gonna have issues with noise. Get the 1-Spot Pro, Fuel Tank Jr. or a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power, and avoid cheap isolated output boxes from ebay that aren't truly isolated.
I really want to get a cry baby and a tube screamer. Great pedal board.
what was the name of your band and is there any videos of you playing live, I'd love to see them if there is
Is it a problem if I have a Graphic EQ and perhaps another pedal that are always on?
No. There are many paths to a good tone. Don't give a shit what one dude on the net thinks.
I know this is an old video at this point, but what cabling do you use for your home-made patch cables and where do you buy it from???
Which boss tuner did you have a problem with?
Hah! Was that a boss HM 2 knob on the ibanez flanger?whatever works cool!👍
+Ben Knudsen HM2 and a couple of Marshall knobs on it, that's what was on it when I got it.
It was missing more than a few knobs back then...
+CSGuitars one of a kind for sure lol cheers
True bypass pedals are the tone suckers, not buffered.
+Michael Allen true bypass pedals don't suck tone, your cables do. Lots of cable and no buffer is the issue, not true bypass.
Some buffers are exceptionally detrimental to your signal, the cry baby for example is very bad.
You asked if I have a question, well, I do.
I've ordered my first pedal (I just started taking my guitar tone seriously; after being fed up with my Line 6, in the last few of months, which is actually how I found your channel) and it's the Aris Effects Savage Overdrive pedal. This thing has awesome distortion from all the demos I've seen. I'm also interested in getting a TS9, because I want something that will boost for a good punk tone but I want the distortion for when I play metal/death metal. Would you recommend me get the TS9 even though I'm getting a distortion pedal? I don't need 'ALL THE GAIN' I just want a good solid metal sound.
If you're wondering, I'm running an ESP in to a Peavey 5150 (block letter model) and putting in some new JJ 6L6 power tubes on Tuesday when they come in the mail. I know the power tubes are kind of irrelevant, I'm just excited.
Tubes can actually make a huge difference in tone, believe it or not.
Regarding the TS9: do it! A common methos of getting a great metal tone is setting up your amp to taste, then dialling the gain down a fair amount. Turn on your TS9 (or TS808 or Bad Monkey or Seymour Duncan 805, or whatever) and turn the level all the way up and gain all the way down. It makes your tone a lot grittier and tightens up the low end.
I use a TS9 into a 6505 with a Recto cab, and I find it sounds best with the tone knob around 11:00. It saps the low end a little bit, so work the tone knob to get some bass back.
Cheers friend!
When pedal says it's true bypass, doesn't that mean it has a buffer in it? Or is it the other way around?
+NoyzyBoyZ3 I have a video on the topic.
Look for 'The Truth About True Bypass', it will explain everything
+CSGuitars Thanks man,I'll do that!
Your accent is just hilarious!
Interesting, that you put the reverb before the delay. Most peoplde do it the other way round, to get the reverb on the delayed notes. What do you think it gives to the sound doing it your way?
+RapjackLP I think it comes down to how you view delay. For a lot of people who use delay in a very precise, rhythmic way then having it before the reverb makes complete sense.
I don't think of delay in that way. I think about it in terms of natural space. Where echos occur naturally are in very large spaces, shout into the mountains and you'll hear your shout echo back. So I have my reverb and delay ordered to reflect which space is bigger.
Usually I'm only using a hall reverb set low, so the bounceback from a fairly small room, but I have a reasonably long delay, like the echo coming from a very grand open space.
So consider my guitar sound being generated in a place, complete with the reverb of the location, and the sound projecting into a valley. The echos would come back with the reverb of the location the sound was initiated from.
Ah, thank you very much, i will try that and see how it sounds for myself.
