Those repetitions to create dramatic effect, those chiseled lines and that heartbreak at the climax makes it all the way better. "Faint smell of dead vultures wafting from the strawberry ice-cream". She liked her free spirit even before I read God of small things- I had read articles by her- she was very gifted that way. Then the Booker prize came and I couldn’t wait to read the “God of Small things”. I was in medical school and my room mate in the hostel had managed to find a copy and kept it the room. I still remember the excitement /devouring every page - charmed by her fantastical writing style. It was well known that the book had a semi autobiographical spin, her own childhood with a heavy dose of fiction. There was more too- incest and a truely stomach churning ending. I was deeply disturbed after completing the book which made me reflect on the author in a very negative way- I was repulsed. The deep sense of melancholy Iasted days. Very interestingly my room mate never read the book- she remarked about feeling lost and very sad all of a sudden which she felt was connected with the book ( even with out opening a page). She chose to return it with out reading and once the book was gone- we both felt greatly relieved. You could call it superstition anything you want but I had an unwarranted experience. Arundathi totally radiates a negative energy to me after that incident.
