Really interesting, how thick did you lay down the sawdust? Did you initially use cardboard or did you put it directly on the soil?

Yes, we placed cardboard, not nearly enough though, I recommend a double layer if you have it. About 4 inches of sawdust mulch on top. It works great but I still need to do some weeding, I have some persistent grass and thistles popping up.

@@tinygardenhabit thanks for your reply. I’ve done this no dig method several times on smaller plots under 1‘000 m2. Wood chips are also hard to come by or very expensive. I had access to 20 m3 of sawdust for free, so I took it of course 😂. I will try it out for my paths. Walking barefoot on sawdust is definitely more pleasant than on woodchips.

Hey! I also garden in Transilvania, weeds heaven. 🙂 I have tested with cardboard and wood chips last year and it was an ok solution for weeds , buuut it was also kind of the best home to slugs. Do you have slugs? If yes, did you see more slugs using this method in the garden? I also experimented with straw and grass cuttings without cardboard and I had less slugs in those areas but also more weeds and it was breaking up faster. So I’m looking for alternativ solutions.

Hey Andreea, I just saw your comment! The first year of this setup was slug and snail heaven, but in time, the population normalized. I do have slugs, but they live inside the beds, not on the actual paths. The wooden sides of beds really attract them. Probably the sawdust too, but I haven't noticed. Plus, after a while, the sawdust gets super compacted. It's still not an ideal solution because it needs a lot of cardboard underneath, which we don't have.
