Using a neighbor's wireless access point without his knowledge and permission is a bad idea, even if it isn't illegal in your locality. It may not be legal even with their permission. The answer varies depending on the policies of residential internet service providers and plans. If the service provider allows it and the neighbor agrees, using the neighbor's Wi-Fi connection is legal.

Have to tell a funny story:
My grandmother lives in the middle of basically no where. She has internet that comes through the phone line that maxes out at 0.3 mbps download around 3am. Verizon coverage is spotty, and she had a router that supported 54mbps maximum. She would not listen to me and bought a $200 WiFi router that has 3 antennas as opposed to two. She thought that this would greatly improve her connection speed. Surprise! It didn’t But she wouldn’t listen when I said that it would be best to no waste her money.
Moral of the story: Your grandchildren probably know more about technology than you do.

Ever since I added a fan to my home networking gear, I have not needed to reset my router in over three years. The products are designed to die, they have no cooling, the heat sinks they do have aren't even applied to all the right components. So it's worth noting that I had added some that were meant for Raspberry Pi devices. My old TP-Link Archer D7 still works like it did right out of the box. I think it would be cool (no pun intended) to see you guys mod a home router or two and test them compared to one without added cooling.

I usually get a new router after five years of age. Not only is the hardware refresh good for the reasons Linus mentioned , unless you're running 3rd party firmware, you'll stop getting patches and security updates. Depending on your situation you may want to do it more often than that too. Even Ethernet connections can benefit from newer router hardware too. That processing bottleneck will slow those down as well.

What you should know though, especially if you are an IT-tech or computer specialist at your workplace, most of the the devices I have tested do not support older security protocols. This means if you are called to a place where some of the machines used in the factory are from -90's or even 2000, they can't be connected to the network anymore. This also came up when the networks moved from 10Mbit to 100Mbit+ connections, as some of the software only understood 10Mbit connection speeds. I've actually have had to buy a HUB from flea market after upgrading the net framework to CAT6 to cut the speed down to 10Mbit at one place, so the accounting software could access the servers again..

    8 bits = 1 byte
    1000 kilobit = 1 Megabit
    AC1900(Mbps) ÷8(bits) ÷ 1000(kiliobits)
    1.900.000 kilobits÷ 8 bits =

One thing that my ISP does that's scummy is sell you a plan with 100 megabit down and 40 up speeds, but they don't even give you a wireless AC router to take advantage of those speeds

Wear I live I only I have one choice for service provider for internet, the highest speed they offer is 5mbs, is it even worth upgrading my router so I can try and have a constant 5mbs through out my house compared to the 3 I currently get in most of my house?

So I need a router with a coaxal plug on the back, I guess a modem combo? It's for a Verizon network. Already have a Verizon router on the main floor and only have another coaxal line in the basement. The router needs to output fast speeds and will be connected to a switch. Any recommendations? Or do I need a stock Verizon one because Verizon uses moca or something?

If you want check the speed of your WiFi connection, download the app 'WiFi Network Analyser' (I'm on Android and don't know if iOS has a counterpart). It doesn't use your internet connection to test throughput. I'm getting 866Mbs on my S8+ to my Asus router from 2 meters apart.

  • @SeanHarlow

My general rules: If it doesn't support 5 GHz, replace it. If you can't get at least your full internet speed through it, replace it.
Beyond that though, you shouldn't be doing all that much over wireless that really exceeds your internet connection. Large file transfers go on wires. That's what they're there for. Performance will always be better and you don't have to share it.

My ISP promises 200/200Mbit, so I bought a Netgear r7800 Nighthawk X4S to replace an ancient Wireless-G router. On the 5Ghz band, I frequently get 200-250Mbit over WIFI. Basically the same as on my Ehternet devices. Even in the rooms where the router isn't. Can't recommend it enough!

When I get home from my business trip I'm actually going to go check my router and make sure it's up to date. Right now my internet is 20 megabytes per second download and 4 megabytes per second upload. I'm able to download and play online games I've been wanting to stream myself playing video games I don't know what internet I should use I only have two choices HughesNet or Radio based internet cables out of the question cuz they don't bring the cable lines down my road.

I actually upgraded a few weeks ago. This place I'm renting only came with a old 2.4 ghz wireless router, and with about 15 signals in the area, it was shit, I only had 1 neighbor on 5 ghz, so it was a very nice upgrade.

    • @oldtwins
      @oldtwins 6 лет назад

I can get about 30 2.4 signals in my crowded area. The band is useless for anything other than low speed transmission devices. Forget about even watching a 480p youtube video without spinning. 5GHz is mandatory for me.

1:26 Hey Linus. I have an AC1900 router (Netgear R7000) and it says it does 1300mbps on the 5GHz band, but i never get those speeds on AC...i only get around 230mbps through the Wifi. i've troubleshooted and asked technical support at Netgear but they couldn't fix it. Is it an advertising/marketing problem? are manufacturers lying to us? My ISP is giving me 800mbps (I have fiber optic 1Gbps internet)
