Cool ! The whole point of backing vocals is to enhance the overall sound of the main vocals and add another layer to improve the song as a whole. If you're covering this and it doesn't sound right because of the backing vocals then you are doing something wrong. Change your range to fit the song and you'll find they will match better and make you sound better.
I dunno what you guys find off with the backing vocals. I tried this out and it's fine. You just gotta learn how to match your range with them. Practice. That's all I can say. Backing vocals mean a lot. Especially when you sing live. It makes you sound pro if you do it just right.
