My grandfather has some stories from Vietnam, and they’re pretty wild. There’s one in particular that stuck with me. He dropped into the jungle at night (he was a PJ), and was on his way to wherever. Only the sound of the jungle and footsteps, until he heard that distinctive ‘click’ of the safety disengaging all around him. He doesn’t like to talk about what happened after that, but I’ve gotten bits and pieces. Only him and one other guy made it. I can’t help but get goosebumps whenever I think of that story.

My father was part of the Algerian Military he was was issued either a (Algerian made)Russian AKM or Chinese Type 57. He said he enjoyed them both. he said the best part was that Algerian solders could easily disable them and understand their mechanism. He himself got a record for disassembling and reassembling his AK. Btw typically the Algerians removed the built in Bayonet cause it was basically useless in the desert and Mediterranean landscape.

I remember fighting in Afghanistan and ISO OIF, our M-16s were much more accurate than the 47 and 47 versions held against us. When clearing rooms, and firefights at close range the 47 was much more effective. The 47 would pierce through walls, and anything you thought might provide cover. Frags were the only thing that was keeping us alive when in close quarters.

I remember when the Norinco AK's were commonly imported in the late 80's/ early 90's and then that importation was banned which also stopped the chinese SKS and tokarev clones from being imported. They were so cheap back then but I was just a child at the time. The quality was far superior to that of the Romanian Aks which were imported later. The Norinco is about as close as one can get to a Vietnam era NVA/VC Ak, provided it was the milled receiver version as the Norinco also has the correct tri-blade bayonet. Whats ironic is Norinco has continued to be imported into Canada since the Us import ban.

The first time I have fired a full auto M16 in the Philippines, it made me chills. But firing a captured Communist rebel AK47, I was jumping for more like a kid. The experience 35 years after still gives me a lifetime experience. Today, I know it was not the original Russian AK but a Chinese AK. Who cares, what I care it has a full auto selector. 20 years here in the US, I have not fired any full auto rifles. It will give me the chills just to hold one. That's going to be the icing of my semi auto rifles collection, a tried-and-true full auto. Yes, there are some being sold or auctioned but the chances of getting one in the open market is rare and expensive. I don't want the FBI checking my bank accounts of my gun purchases.

Kind Thanks Hickok45! Some fancy shootin there! I’ve been a cabinetmaker many years and have used many gallons of shellac. Made from beetle egg cases that are collected and dissolved in denatured alcohol. It’s been used for centuries. In our early days it was often called spirit varnish. I’ve restored many a shellac finish on period antiques and some gun stocks. It is a tough finish, easy to touch up but not as weather resistant as an oil based varnish. Paste waxing it will keep it lovely. You can also remove shellac with denatured alcohol and on an old finish carefully remove grime and grease then wax but you must be quick. Always experiment of course. Many Blessings and Kind Thanks! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

You described the thing "shellac". I had seen it in China when I was a child. It was used as furniture finish. Its dry form looks like crubled something (I didn't know it came from bugs). Once dissolved, magic happened and it looks like clear paint. I recall the carpenter used a rag, not a brush to apply it. I asked what paint that is, he said that's not paint, it's "clear skin" 清皮。

also unique to the type 56 is the RPK pattern of the rivets and just to keep hickoks stock from getting loose there is an easy trick i learned from Robski aka the AK Operator where you take some wood chips like when youre carving something with a knife and unscrew the stock and then put the fibers or wood chips together with the screw back in and it automatically tightens up pretty good and keeps the stock from getting loose. anyway nice video i love the AK platform and the type 56 is one of top 3 AKMs of all time!

Bought a semi-auto Chinese AK back in the day and took it over to the Duarte shooting range where I emptied a few wooden crates of ammo through it. Couldn't believe how hot the barrel became after just a few shots, and that got me wondering how insanely hot the barrel would get in full auto, and how accuracy would be affected when a rifle barrel gets too hot to touch.
