I grew up in Pittsburgh and lived there the first 11 years of my life. I lived in Allentown very near the old St George Church on Allen Ave close to Warrington Ave. I remember seeing Roberto Clemente play at Three Rivers quite a few times as a kid, sitting way up there in Peanut Heaven. I was also fortunate enough to be at the 4th game of the 1971 World Series with my father. (I was 8 years old, but I remember it well. First World Series night game ever played). Mr Clemente was, and still is, a true role model. And after all these years, I still have a vivid memory burned into my brain of myself sitting on the edge of my bed in my room, listening to the radio, and hearing of the sad news of the plane crash that took the life of this very great man.

I grew up in Pittsburgh. On Liberty ave. And on Butler st. Not far from the ball park. I was in the little league back then in the late 60"s and early 79's. We played on a Astro turf field thanks to the Pittsburgh Pirates. They got a new Turf field and donated their old turf to us. We got to play on their old astro turf.

Willie was great too! No doubt about it. Statistics-wise they were very close. I think Willy played in the MLB a few more years which may explain his 1903 rbi total vs Roberto's 1305. You could make an argument either way but if I had to choose just one, I would select Roberto.

Roberto had the most God given talent of any player to play the game. I was blessed to grow up watching him in Pittsburgh and he was by far the best baseball player I ever saw. Roberto was even a better person who gave his life trying to help those in need. He was my hero growing up, a role model, something that we don't see in sports much anymore and he will continue to have a place in my heart the rest of my life. Roberto was just a man but he will be forever remembered by those of us who got to see him play the game like no one else ever has.

EVERY September 30, MLB players and umpires should wear #21, just as they do with #42 for Jackie Robinson on April 15.
How special would that be? Youngsters being exposed to his greatness on a National level. Sportscasters all over explaining the wonder, his life, and the tragic irony of his 3,000th and last hit. His life on and off of the field deserve to be lauded as the only other player who have the five-year waiting period waived for HOF induction besides Lou Gehrig (not taking the 1936 class into consideration).

You have to realize Clemente was/is to Latinos what Jackie Robinson was/is to black people. His majestic way of life off the field has the MLB humanitarian award named after him because he gave his life for others. Based on your ignorant comments, I think you might be the one who is racist for not accepting Puerto Rican and Latino intersectionality with America's pastime. That's not who Roberto Clemente was and he'd blow you off today because he was about the game, and not about any racist slander. Roberto was one of the greatest of all time.
