    I make clothes and one thought I've had is that if I made a size 8 dress, it tends to fit a pretty good majority of size 8 ladies. If I make a size 18 dress, it is harder for that one dress to fit as many size 18 ladies. Why?
    Most ladies who are size 8 have smaller differences in ratios from breast, waist, hip and girth to each other. A size 8 dress may fall above, at or below the knees and may be a bit tight or loose along the breast, waist and hip area, but generally, they can squeeze in there. They are more or less kinda the same silheoutte.
    But on size 18 ladies, there are vast differences as to breast, waist, hip and girth. One lady may have very little in the chest area and all booty and the one next to her may be a polar opposite. Two ladies may both have a size 38 waist, but one carries it in the front and the other more equally distributed. The shifts in where the weight lies are VERY varied as opposed to the smaller sizes where differences between ladies of the same size are not as great.
    As a result, the number of potential buyers for any single dress will be higher for the smaller sized ladies since it will fit correctly on more ladies, than any single dress design for larger size ladies.
    Does that make sense?

      Curandera99 I completely agree with what you just said,and i thought of the exact same thing.My friend is heavy and when we go shopping together it is so hard for her to find clothes.She weights 240 pounds and she is 5foot5.I weight 140 pounds and I'm also 5foot5.But the weird thing is i wear size 7-9 pants and she wears size 1-3 pants.Her leggs and butt are soo small compared to mine but where she carries her weight it is all at the top.So for her to find a dress it is a nightmare!The thing is it all depends where you carrie your weight so thats why it is harder for plus size women to find clothes because even if you have the same weight as somebody else doesn't mean you are the same shape.I really wish tho that stores and designers would make a bigger effort in trying to include everybody even if that means more work.

    I agree with everything you say. Models don't need to be 'fat' to promote different body types. People in the middle- like sizes 4 to 8- are probably the healthiest but are very rarely shown in fashion commercials.

    I used to love fashion; I would read every magazine, I would go shopping every week, meticulously put together outfits.
    Due to a serious illness and an intense steroid plan, I gained about 80 pounds several years ago and hit a size 14 and since then my love for fashion has completely disappeared. I wear sweats at every opportunity and avoid shopping at all costs. Representation matters, feeling welcome in a store matters, knowing you can find your size in a store absolutely matters. I hope that I can fall back in love with fashion one day- it sucks to have something you loved be so impossible to enjoy.

    I think the fantasy of being skinny tall and white is ironically the thing hurting the brands. As a person who's on the chubbier side, pretty busty and pretty short I don't relate whatsoever to those models running around. There's nothing about those models that feel relatable or like a better version of myself. In an ad, when there's such a limited amount of time, appearance is really the only thing a company has to establish a connection to the consumer. When people who look like me aren't represented, I don't feel envious; I'm just not interested in buying what they have to sell.

    I just don't understand why there has to be a separate part of a store with completely different clothes when it comes to plus size clothing, like why can't there be cute clothing and it be just another size w the rest of the clothes. Like s, m, l, xl, 2x etc. I don't shop in the plus size section but I am a size L and it sucks to see this is how plus size clothing/modeling is treated

      I hate the way they do this in department stores! It feels like they're shaming larger sizes. But! I am a fashion design student and from technical sewing experience, I've found that if I sew something for a size 8, I can't just up the seam allowance to make it fit a 14. It will not fit well! It's important to make beautiful clothing that plus sizes will also feel good in. Sometimes they have to do completely different designs from small to plus.

  • @sydnieraquel

    Hmm. I'm not sure. The honest question is how many rich fat women do you see? You see rich fat men but as soon as a woman becomes rich she's spending her money on expensive personal trainers and surgeons. Any woman who has the money to drop on a 2k dollars dress also has money to drop on liposuction as well, which they tend to do; and it's that simple. Why would companies that sell dresses for 1.7k waste their money on advertising and diversifying their fashion brand to women who cannot even afford their dresses when they know that most of the rich and established women who can afford them tend to be thin? The reality is that designers do not want their clothes to be easily accessible.
    This is why designers mark their bags up to 3k when they no normal person can afford them. When these bags were cheaper and ended up in the hands of many in the situations of knock-offs, you wouldn't always question a knock-off if you thought that someone might have been able to afford $400 on a designer bag. When a bag is $4k and you see a normal person with it, you know it's a knock-off. Designers WANT their pieces to be exclusive. If these designers wanted their bags or dresses to be on everyone they'd make it easy for everyone to attain (which would diminish quality but thats an entirely other story), but the reality is that most brands don't WANT fat, poor, non-white people in their clothes. They're upholding a standard associated with bureaucracy. It's sad but true. Fashion doesn't need to be defended in this case.
    With fashion it's about exclusivity. To those in the comments talking about the lack size diversity, how many of you would be able to afford full priced Balmain? And I'm not saying that in a cheeky way, I'm saying this in a realism way. Fashion's philosophy all around is about keeping it in the hands of the few. If being fat was associated with wealth in addition to it being considered a rarity, as it is in some countries, fashion would cater to fat people the most.

    Fat women aren't buying nice clothes for two reasons: Firstly, a large number of them are literally being told by those ads that the only way to look pretty is to be skinny, not to dress well. This created a sort of rift between the industry and larger women. For skinny women, the ads are encouraging them to buy nice clothes. For fat women, the ads are saying "you'll never look like this, no matter what you wear". This causes a lot of fat women to literally not care/not want to try and dress well because they're told that's not the key to looking pretty or hot, the key is being skinny.
    The second issue is the sizes. The fat women I know who are actually trying to be fashionable tend to buy their clothes from indie brands/thrift shops/make the clothes themselves because of the lack of sizes offered by mainstream brands. Even when a big brand provides all the sizes, the clothes just aren't designed to work on larger bodies. Not only are there no sizes and the clothes aren't designed for fat women, but fat women also don't have the same access to the fashion world as skinny women do. Skinny women grow up reading magazines telling them how to dress, what make-up to wear, what accessories to match with their look, etc. and most of those tips don't work for someone who is fat.
    Basically, the fashion industry has been actively alienating a large group of potential customers (more than half of all women) just because they can't be arsed to try and appeal to a more diverse base. If we also take into account the lack of racial diversity, the lack of environmental awareness and other serious issues within the industry, it's pretty easy to see why it's a complete mess at this point. Society is moving forwards and the fashion industry is just consistently failing to follow suit. Either it gets its shit together ASAP or we're going to see the death and rebirth of an entire industry during our generation. I'm not even sure which one I'd rather, to be honest.

      the one size they mostly use is 36. 36 and 38 are healthy sizes (one could argue the healthiest). if a model looks like a "hanger" that's probably because she's below the size, like a 34 or even 32. also, when you're super tall you're usually skinny as well

    I mean it's easier to make clothes for slim people, because skinny people look kinda the same I mean when you measure them whereas fat people store their fat in different places, someone can have big thighs and someone can be overall skinny but be fat on the face and the stomach so it's harder to dress those people....

  • @andjelabirkin
    @andjelabirkin 7 лет назад +64

    About that... I'm a size 0 and there is nothing to buy. Some countries have made my size illegal to sell - and that's prejudice at it's best . I'm not anorexic, I'm just 5'5' and have no hips. Never could I find a dress that fits me, and all my jeans look baggy until I tailor the shit out of them. The reason models are skinny is because they are a sample size. Skinny looks about the same, while there are many types of plus size bodies - bigger hips, bigger tummy, broader shoulders... So it's easier to just use skinny models. Just stop comparing yourself to models, because their look is their job. Also I think fashion should include more athletic bodies and quit the plus size crap all together, just find a healthier sample size maybe. It is not fashion industry's job to work on your self esteem, that's your job. I wonder what would happen If they made size 16 illegal, as they did with my size.

    Models are just walking mannequins/hangers. Designers want their clothes on skinny hangers. As haute couture and higher end fashion go bigger sizes mean more work, more expensive fabric, etc etc. also if a designer does a campaign with larger models no one is going to pay attention to the clothes all eyes will be on the model.

    Love your fashion content, it's very refreshing. The issue of size in fashion as you said is this idea of fantasy, and how we are accustomed to associating slender, hourglass figure as something to aspire to. I'm wondering though if it is what we biologically thrives for, or is the tv/media conditioning us to have these almost impossible desires (etc. Teenagers getting anorexia bc of seeing models in magazine)

  • @Commentator541
    @Commentator541 7 лет назад +6

    Enough of this, if anything all industries should be promoting healthy lifestyle. 14 is definitely FAT and THEN SOME. I am so offended with this "I'm big", no, you're not big, you're overeating on crap! Being over weight introduces all sorts of health risks. And I'm not saying being fat is ugly, many people look so much better when fat as opposed to skinny, but being overweight should never be considered a default.

    • @macharsh15
      @macharsh15 4 года назад

      Yeah but you see for some being size 14 isn’t really a choice and when they force themselves to become smaller and thinner, THAT becomes unhealthy. The entire standardisation of sizes by numbers like 6,8, 14 is a very Western world concept and can’t be applied to all ethnicities. So saying being size 14 is the same as being fat is kinda incorrect.

  • @Commentator541

    No it is not, I'm not into slim people AT ALL. But this thing "size" is a joke, we need to realize it is height, and body shape. You can be tall and slim and still have very wide hips, or shoulders, or a small head, big head, long arms... the list is endless. And not everyone puts on muscles or fat in the exact same proportion. First brand that starts to actually write down for what shape the garment is made for will sell shit tons of stuff because you won't need to try on so many garments that don't look good on you.

    • @DrT0705
      @DrT0705 6 лет назад +1

      +Medee I'm so tired of this fat=unhealthy story. It's simply not true ALL the time. I work in a hospital and I have seen plenty of slim/skinny people suffer from 'obesity-related' illnesses, ranging from heart disease to stroke. I also know overweight people who exercise and eat well much of the time. No one, apart from a person's personal physician, can comment on someone's weight and its relationship to their health. Just be honest - you don't really care about the health of plus-size people, you find fat unappealing or unattractive and use the "Obesity is not healthy!" message to camouflage your disgust.

    • @mede__
      @mede__ 6 лет назад

      I think to some extent people that are a little overweight or have more flesh on their bones can be healthy, being overweight does not automatically mean you're unhealthy and being skinny or normal-weight does not automatically mean you're healthy. However, I noticed that so many media outlets and people try to normalize obesity, and I'm not talking about overweight, I am talking about severely overweight. If you can barely walk 2,000 steps a day, or if you can barely breathe when you go up the stairs, there's no way you are healthy sis. It is not natural and obviously interferes with your everyday life, since you can't do what you should be able to.

    ok I personally blame the food industry in America. Everything is supersized, greasy, and has a lot of extra sugar. Now, if you're a big girl and feel confident in your skin then yes girl good for you, but a lot of people who are a 12+ size means that they are overweight, and for the most part not happy or confident. if you're overweight I'm sorry but that means you are not healthy and you should be taking care of your health and body. Obesity has become an epidemic in America, and once again I blame the food industry. No offense but adding 14+ sizes will only indulge our society to keep on eating the way we do. The food industry will keep on producing food that is harmful to ourselves and our environment. just keep in mind that even if you're 5'11 the maximum you should weight is about 180lbs thats a size 12 but a healthy size 12 because you're within you're a healthy weight for your size. Now most women in America are 5'5 weighing 220lbs+ when the maximum is 144lbs how does that make sense. I'mm not saying we should all be a size 2 thats impossible but I also don't think we should support something that will further cater our unhealthy eating habits.

    I was offered an opportunity to model in a spring photo shoot for a local magazine with a girl I knew who was blonde as they wanted a brunette to shoot with her. I met with the woman directing the shoot and she was a lot taller than me and pretty thin (I’m not plus size nor the typical model size I’m an AU8) and she said she would get back to me about the first sort of trial shoot. The next day I was messaged by her and she said she had chosen someone else to model with her instead due to the ‘height issue’ as it may look weird to have a tall model and a short model. Unfortunately I know the other model and I know she is my height which only leaves me to believe it was size as the other model was very thin. 🤷🏻‍♀️ what can you do

  • @Helux1957
    @Helux1957 5 лет назад +1

    Designing for people who are thin is just easier because it can be more generic. The change is, that it's beginning to seem "lazy" and that's a good thing.

    I agree with u when u say a middle ground in modeling would be better...for my parte specially in terms of promoting a healthy weight... Always having in mind that there r naturally bigger n smaller constitutions, a beauty canon that promotes a middle ground could, i personally think, spare the mayority of people felling depressed about their bodies n also would lower the level of unhealthy or extreme practices that people resort to just to be like that "fantasy". I am my self sice 12 n on the soft side (need to bit the gym soon) and i cannot see my self represented by neither the skiny model not the plus size model...and they are all beautifull to me but i would just love to see clothing on women more close to my sice every now and then! Lets expand the " fantassy" from both sides and include the in between...

    I tots agree x I’m British so I think the sizes are different here but when I shop online all sizes up to 16 are considered “normal” and size 18 upwards is plus size and you have to shop up a hole different category. And the girls who are in the sample photos under the size 16 they not size 16 there a size 4 but in the sample phots for 18 and upwards are size 24,28. It’s so so so true ! You either see one end of the spectrum or the other. Love how you brought this up x good luck with your study’s xxx love this and plz keep it up xxx

    I think pushing the skinny and tall ideal isn't just about profiting in fashion but in all sorts of industries... Health, sports, dieting etc are different sectors that benefit from pushing those ideals because it sells their products for a dream that doesn't need to come to reality but people's admiration of those dreams makes those companies rich.... Idkthe fashion brands ofcourse don't think "yes im doing this for the benefit of other commercial industries" but those industries and their agenda does affect the way things are portrayed.
    Anyway i just thought this should be touched upon too even though the video is old maybe you'll see this and it'll give you other ideas for your content.

I don't see me, my mother, or my friends in the campaign. My global counterparts say we are targeting the hip mom. 1st burn lol but I told them this is bullshit every mom would like to get up and look glamorous but some are lucky to brush their hair. Hi, I just wanted to say you're one of the few fashion vloggers out there I actually like - you are, in my opinion, very honest and brave to speak your mind to the world without giving a f*** about what those million $ companies would say. Also, great video. As a plus size woman, who loves clothes, I must say there is so very LITTLE diversity in our clothing. And I think it's sad because there is no choice at all, options are super limited or they follow the same concept of style, color, cuts, etc. And if designers let their imagination run wild, I think they can come up with a lot of new ideas for +size people. Yes, being obese or straight fat is not healthy, I feel it myself, and I am trying to win the battle all the time. I just don't understand why, while trying to lose weight, I should be forced to wear ugly clothing... I think you should be able to look great and try to lose weight at the same time. But now they very often seem mutually exclusive...
    Once again, great video!

    I agree there should be fashionable clothes for size 10 women. But don't use them in fashion campaigns, because it's impossible for them to make the clothes look good. The whole idea of using thin models is to make us believe we'll look that slim when we wear those clothes. Plus size models just confront us with the harsh reality.

    clothes dont look good on obese ppl, when you start getting into 12 and above we are talking about obesity level, like that is a serious health concern and these people should be wearing nothing but track suits and fucking walmart sweat pants til they get their shit together and lose that goddamn weight.fat shaming should be a thing, these ppl are living slovenly decadent slobbish existences and need to hold themselves to higher standards. You can just stuff your face all day and never work out and think thats acceptable. It's not and you NEED to be shamed into pulling it together. being obese is NOT OK nor is it beautiful so stop pushing it on us

      Dawn Johnson, there's a difference between being concerned for people's health and what you are doing. It's clear you dislike fat people. There is no reason to belittle a whole group of people just cause you think they should be living differently. Just know that not everyone grew up like you and/or have your same experiences. Yes, I agree that obese people should take better care of themselves, but I don't agree that the should only be allowed to wear 'track suits from Walmart.' Yes, obese are unhealthy, but they are still people. They should still be allowed to wear fashionable clothing made for them.
      Do you understand what I am saying? I just want to make sure my point comes across.

    • @dawnjohnson766
      @dawnjohnson766 6 лет назад

      I realize I'm being super harsh, but obesity is a direct result of behavior: extreme laziness, disgusting eating habits and zero exercise. It's appalling. Alot of these people live off disability. Did you know that, they don't work and just eat all day and watch TV.. no not all of course. But I don't think they deserve cute clothing options til they lose some serious weight. Plus it's wasteful to try to make a silk shirt for a fat person and expect it not to be 4 times the cost.. it's 4 times the fabric. Yeah I dislike obese ppl, because they're everything I hate about society.

    Fashion is supposed to make you dream, aspire. If you tend to be on the hefty side, there are also ways on how to deal with that. The idea of there's nothing else is to buy is rather false. If you will say there's not much to buy in higher end stores, that's probably true but at the same time, these high end brands target a market that has money. And usually if you have money, you'll try your best to take care of yourself whether get a trainer, get liposuction, get on Dr Cohen diet, paleo diet, etc etc etc. I mean if I was very overweight and have tons of money, I'll buy couture cause they'll adjust the size to you. I mean stores like JC Penney, Sears, etc etc sell clothes for bigger ladies. If you're turned off because it's JC Penney or Sears, maybe consider not being a snob. There's plenty of stores that cater to every woman size. It's a matter of state of mind if you want to get sucked in that brands should always have plus sizes. That will be too much cost if I owned that business especially let's say that I have a certain target market. Just to keep the quality will be harder especially if not many people will buy in the store let's say it usually is targeted to sizes 0 to 12. If you'll say bigger corporation brands like h&m can do it but then again it's a fast fashion brand and we all know the crimes that come with fast fashion. So where do you put the line of demarcation? For me, we have the liberty to buy in any brand or store we want. Plus one has to remember not because you're wearing Fendi, it means you're wearing it. Sometimes it wears you and i don't think that's a good thing at all. Makes you a real fashion victim not in a sense that you have no fashion styling skills but rather you just buy the brand because you've become a brand who're.

    I also wish that there was more representation and realness with skin types. Not only does that mean seeing skins of different colors, but also of different textures. Things like acne and stretch marks are completely natural and many times nothing can be done except try to cover them up. I'm tired of skin shaming. I'm tired of seeing all these air brushed people when in reality their not as common as we pretend. Small skin issues are not a representation of your self care or your worth and I think we need to stop pretending like they are.

  • @peterthart531

    Simple really. I can tell you from experience-it looks better-who wants their product to look like junk. I am a fashion photographer and I can tell you from personal experience that a 5'11 size 2 photographs much easier and looks a lot better. All the other stuff (race, sexual preference) makes zero difference as long as you have a good look. In the end folks, the designers et al want their stuff to look good-they are selling a fantasy. I guess if they want to compete with Walmart they can put out another brand.

    Is unhealthy to be too thin or too big. I'm sorry, but the fashion industry needs to promote health (in the last couple of years, models are looking healthier, not too skinny), not plus sizes or overweight models or people. To promote health issues is the problem here. Ashley Graham, for instance, has a beautifull face but her body... only a hypocrite will look at her and say she's healthy and that her legs or arms don't look desfigured because of the excess weight. I do battle against overweight and I don't think it's right, of course, to shame of mock someone for beiing fat, but I don't see her as inspirational whatsoever. I look at her and other plus size "models" and I immediately remember to eat less and be healthy. I'm not a doctor, but I'm almost certain that she or other plus size will suffer from overwight issues later.

  • @carolinebouldin1171
    @carolinebouldin1171 7 лет назад

    sadly, I have a feeling high fashion will always use size 0-2 models because they feel that's who wears their clothes best and it would be more expensive to have more than one sample size. Also the industry has become so used to using very skinny girls and may not be open to change.

  • @luciefitness
    @luciefitness 7 лет назад

    I couldn't agree more, plus, it's like we're tired of the lack of representation as you say and it's just enough. I want to see any body size, any skin tones (and it's not only about black/white models like, we don't have enough asian models, latinas models, native american models, transgender models, red headed models, indians models no wonder why "instagram models" are popular). We aren't a minority, asians aren't a minority, in fact it's a huge market, same for indians so even in the name of "the buyers are white females so that's why" isn't true, white females are used to see instagram models and watch movies with non white actress and it's not a choc.
    Things need to change in the fashion industry otherwise I don't see the point. Representation matter and as much as I like Gigi Hadid, even if she doesn't look like me, I could see an asian or indian model and not be choked, actually a brand with plus size models or "minorities" would stand out

    Having a skinny body is a privilege in our society, being able to afford $1300 sweaters is also a privilege. It is all about exclusivity. If everyone could have it, it wouldn’t be desirable. Unfortunately that seems to be human nature. I love the idea of fashion because of the way it seems to subvert our notions of exclusivity and privilege by making us desire ugly things. It’s what makes it interesting. I love your content btw.

    Fat means laziness + bad eating and life habits.
    This is why nobody want to recognise negative behavior on attractive pics.
    Beside Nobody , Nobody buy clothes to seem like a fashion model , Mature individuals chose clothes following their needs and thinking about the social situations they need to face. Beside, Fashion Pictures are Visual Fairytales where we could watch a 16yo Natalia Vodianova in Nina Ricci ( or Rochas...) gown worth 40000 $ and accept it simply as a visual fantasy. 37yo Natalia Vodianova is not magical anymore.I don't know why but what I see looking at her pics - right now - is a Pretty , rich and powerful lady who married the heir of LVMC, who gave birth to a bunch of kids, very intelligent, very chic who's living the elite life but she's out in the REALITY not in the REALNESS... I'll explain you fashion with the choice of a very special model: Do you remember Gemma Ward? Gemma Ward thin in Alexander mc Queen such as the queen of chess?
    Do you remember Gemma Ward 2 y after wearing a bikini at Chanel when. yes . plump and becoming even bigger ( paparazzi: s pics...) a couple of months after Chanel? She rebelled the fashion world and she is since an outcast, even if - before - she was the most ideal fashion model ever. She cannot even use her magnificent face for fragrance or makeup adds only because she destroyed the collective fantasy, she destroyed our dream and nobody wants to forgive her. Even me because she was the ideal of my youth and she reminded me that I m not young anymore. Don't mess with fantasy. Nobody needs reality even watching at at a Azzedine or better , Lacroix gown....
