Unique storyteller and a great director.
(1) The interviewer could easily be one of his characters.
(2) I've always liked Solondz's work, but I now regret having attempted to listen to his voice.

I just watched Happiness and I am not sure I like it as much as Welcome to the Dollhouse but it's got genius moments like the conversation between dad and son at the end. Also the acting is one of the best, amazing amazing acting. It reminds me of Lynch but more ironic and more realistic
I feel like happiness is about the façades that we wear and the internal lives that we’re really living that are diametrically opposed to what we’re presenting to others.

@@Capronice that movie was shown to me by friend when i was in a chaotic post breakup point in my life. I think he meant well but it still sent me into a depressive spiral. I had dreams about it man

Marija Martinovic while I have not seen Happiness yet, I watched Welcome to the dollhouse and had a similar impression as yours. I couldn’t understand why people seemed to like it so much as a comedy. Then I watched one interview when he said “my movies aren’t for everyone, specially people who like them”. So I guess there’s truth on what you said about it being shocking. Dollhouse for me was just absolutely depressing

He likes to push buttons, ala John Waters.....what is disturbing about him is he imparts on his child actors, adult dialogue and nihilistic behavior.
Yeah, I have a fairly laissez faire attitude to movies, I think fictional storytelling has every right to be transgressive - my only reservations are typically with the wellbeing of child actors, disabled people, or animals on set. The child actor saying those type of things was not pleasant to watch. Odd how any parent would agree to have their child deliver such lines.
I watched the happiness movie. I don’t mind the other people’s stories in it. The only thing that bothered me was the glamorizing of pedophiles. By making it seem like we should sympathize with the character which is a pedophile. The scene where the little boy was asking the father questions about what he had done and if he’d do it to him was disturbing. He said, “Would you F*** me” to his dad. I don’t ever think this would happen in reality and that’s why I think it glamorizes pedophiles.
That's how it makes it the more disturbing. Its not pleasant viewing through the eyes of evil
I hear you, but the character was reprehensible --- including it in the A-to-Z of human drama doesn't glamorize it
You'll be disappointed to hear about the growing normalisation of pedophilia then...
I hear what you're saying, but I think you're better off directing your outrage at the celebrity culture of pimping out children and putting them in vulnerable positions where they can be taken advantage of.
I think it’s similar to Nabokov’s Lolita in the sense that they’re both works that humanizes pedophiles. Are they both uncomfortable to sit through? Absolutely, I couldn’t finish Lolita because of it. But I think they’re important to show that these monsters... are humans like us, they have complex feelings as us, and for me at least that’s far more scary than, let’s say, Babadook, which is a made up monster for a movie and it’s 100% evil. Hope that makes sense
