Back in the early 70s as a young boy I worked with a surveyor both as a chain man and sometimes as the rod man doing land surveys around the mountains of Steamboat Springs - believe me it was hard work.
when we want to build any building this is one way to survey the land and also to calculate the vertical and horizantal angles ,differnce between points to know how much quantites of soil need for cutting and filling
Wow. This reminds the operator (sorry, Surveyor) to remove the lens cap if they had not already done so. Very thorough tutorial! The student is subsequently reminded to put it back when done. I learned a lot from this video.
As a land surveyor, thanks for making this video, now I know not to ever hire survey assistants from KU if that's how they're taught. so many things done wrong, don't know where to begin.
It's not bad if you're just looking for a rough idea, but when you do it a dozen times a day or so, you get faster and better and make these guys look like actors. It's not a bad starting point.
I use a dot lazer to get the legs centered. It's a little faster than using a plumb bob. Set the dot on the ground mark and shoot it up thru the center of the legs.
Easier and quicker method. Level up the tribrach first ensuring equal distance above and below the screw, normally an indentation in the screw. Now using the optical or laser move the theodolite and tripod together iover the station until central. Now go round each leg in turn, move the leg up or down untill the pond bubble is pointing towards the next leg you are going to. Eventually the pond bubble will be central after you make 3-5 adjustments. Now check the optical or laser plummit should be over the station. If it is not then loosen thr theodolite slightly from the tripod and slide it until its over your station and then re-tighten ( since you leveled the tribrach it shouldn't impact on your setup) You may have to adjust the fine level slightly. If your theodolite doesn't have a EDM dump it. It will make a good doorstop. Using strada went out in the 70's. Good luck and may the force be with you.
Hahaha!!! I remember those days 15 years ago. How clumsy I was and the setup steps I took to set up my instrument. Today I’m a lot more efficient in setting up.
1) First extend de legs of the tripod and then put the theodolite. 2) Insert the batteries before leveling the theodolite. 3)Alhays aim the theodolite to the centrer of the rod. (to aviod errors on the horozontal angle)
They were very clumsy in how they setup the instrument. Only one person should handle the instrument, not at the same time. Also, the plumb bob is impractical in this video. Plumb bobs still have practical uses, but that is why there is an optical plumb on these instruments, and it is even used in this video. Newer instruments have a laser plumb, but if there isn't one, position the tip of your foot near the point and rough locate it through the optical plumb.
I'm confused. If point A is the spot where a young woman is seen holding the long measuring stick, and point B is the location of the theodolite, and point C is the spot where a young man is holding the long measuring stick then why does the narrator refer to point C as point B? At 5:20 the theodolite is turned to the right. That's point C. Yet, the narrator says point B.
1. Set the tripod over point. 2. Secure theodolite to tripod. 3. Raise tripod to your comfort height and press ONE leg only in. 4. Pick up the remaining two legs, look through plummet eyepiece for monument and center. 5. Press remaining legs in. 6. Level instrument by extending legs with fisheye level. 7. Check plummet and slide the instrument to center. 8. Level to perfect. 9. Turn 180 and half level the error. You're now level and centered. 10. Measure SLOPE angle to monument, NOT SOIL.
A quick question, if you know the answer... I have a theodolite with a laser plummet. However, the tripod has a plumb bob hook inside the tripod screw. This works well for when I attach a plumb bob. However, this interferes with the laser dot which becomes quite blurry and poorly defined. What do people do in this situation?
I was a surveyor for over 7 years. I never used the plumb bob to center the theodolite. If you set up the transit often enough you don’t need it. Therefore no blurry view.
Hello friend, I work as a surveyor in Belarus. Tell a friend which sites in the USA I should apply for to find a job as a surveyor, I worked only in geodetic support for construction along this profile, building houses, schools, kindergartens. Will they take me if I have a Belarusian diploma or do I need to retrain in the USA and where to go to retrain in the USA?
Oh give 'em a break. They're just college kids, obviously hungover. I like 1) the patriotic background music - it compliments the Asian dude using a German theodolite, 2) the mystery hand at point "c" (3:58} and c) the liberal use of the regional pronunciation of the word height as "heighth". Just my three cents....remember, this IS a plunged horizontal angle...replace your lens-cap, remove your batteries and pick up your trash
I’m surprised that you didn’t use the plate level to ensure that the theodolite is truly level. The bull’s eye level does not give such an accurate level although it might be good enough to level the instrument within the range of its automatic compensator (if fitted).
If an automatic compensator was in use, the word Tilt would appear on the display. Since it isn’t, that is all the more reason to use the plate level to complete the levelling of the instrument.
It is sad that a school of Kansas state statis would allow a video to be put out when there are Such fundimontal oversights being made, one of the biggest ones is that the try brack is hang of the try pod. Using two hands on the it, never really setting the legs.
Because it's not a total station. These are theodolites, they aren't a precise, nor as robotic as a total station. A total station will read all the angles and measure them for you (and do the math). They also only require one person to use.
01:29 Oh no... The guy is kicking the tripod in the air while the machine is on the tripod... Please, don't do this. Finish your work with the tripod, then set the machine!!
can anyone tell me anything more about the case shown in my video ... I'm not from that world and I do not understand, I just know that with him I can see very far ... When the period between 1940-1972 was made (a serial number). and if it's worth anything?
Lot's of things to write about the video but pass everything, did anybody realise that when they put the batteries in, they also unleveled the theodolite that they leveled before :) this can't be a university video..
Step 1... You set the instrament on the tripod.Step 2... Other guy secures the instrament to the tripod!Step 3... Call Boss to explain who's fault it was when the theodolite was smashed to pieces.
sir, if i have both the occupied stn and backsight stn coordinate taken by gps recorder then how to minimise the error by gps and use those coordinate in total station..please explain
Hi, the way u got your 180 degrees is 100% wrong … u must turn the lens 180 degree vertically but not the body of cam turn 180 degree, make sure your tutorial is follow standard procedure …. Thanks for ur information 👏🏼
Those students are making mistakes like they are drunk. Lifting up the device without untightening the legs and pulling at it because they almost fall backwards..
I hope no engineers watch this. they would think they know everything about surveying based on this. and if they came in the field after seeing this they'd probably tell u how to do ur job.
Building & Land Surveying. What a Noble Profession. I Love it
Back in the early 70s as a young boy I worked with a surveyor both as a chain man and sometimes as the rod man doing land surveys around the mountains of Steamboat Springs - believe me it was hard work.
I have no idea what this video is about, but I found it fascinating and hypnotic
Janice S It’s about how to use lens caps.
when we want to build any building this is one way to survey the land and also to calculate the vertical and horizantal angles ,differnce between points to know how much quantites of soil need for cutting and filling

Very true I've never seen someone measure the gun with a level rod! Lol smh
Can i join as assistant u....
I can be ur assistant...
It's not bad if you're just looking for a rough idea, but when you do it a dozen times a day or so, you get faster and better and make these guys look like actors. It's not a bad starting point.
This is a simple beginning. The theodolite purpose in roads is for meassuring angles. Thanks for sharing this video

I really enjoyed the way you guys Manipulated the thiodolite
very good knowledge given, good luck always and thank you for sharing
Good job 👍 brave lady and I m also chief surveyor
I'm considering this career and this is super informative. Thank you.
Oh brother, they should definitely, remake this video.
The music reminds me of north korean propaganda videos :D
+zb3 hahaha
The interview LMAO
당신의웨딩드레스
Why did they put this up on RUclips? It doesn't reflect well on the teaching quality of KU I'm afraid......
My party chief would kick my ass if I setup the equipment that way 😂😂
Crunk Navajo why?
Especially with the total station on the legs. 🤣
@@ohasis8331 OOOpppppp
I'd also be dead😂
lmao, when they put the instrument on the legs while they were fully collapsed I knew it was trouble.
This video reminds me of my days in the artillery
1) First extend de legs of the tripod and then put the theodolite.
2) Insert the batteries before leveling the theodolite.
3)Alhays aim the theodolite to the centrer of the rod. (to aviod errors on the horozontal angle)
Educational. The choice to demonstrate to an orchestrated version of "Home On The Range" was a bit strange, but otherwise very informative.
They were very clumsy in how they setup the instrument. Only one person should handle the instrument, not at the same time. Also, the plumb bob is impractical in this video. tomorrow will my "advance surveying" exam. your video help me for my exam. thanks a lot for this helpful video.
it's really educating, tanx guys
update us more
I'm the licensed surveyor in indonesia and this video help me to use theodolit for my job.
I'm confused. These must be students I can't believe it's takes both of them to set up the instrument and who wears UGGs surveying.
lol!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course they’re students. It’s a video for a kansas university civil engineering course.
wow good guess on getting it centered over the nail or whatever
Good lesson i have learn a lot thank you
Good work
1. Set the tripod over point. 2. Secure theodolite to tripod. 3. Raise tripod to your comfort height and press ONE leg only in. 4. Exactly the way I do it. TY
good and informative video, the measurement is good in the park LOL 😁😁😁
Sup super good support bro
the best theodolie demonstration vidoe on u tube
2009 video and using plumb bobs? It shows the core basics of leveling though. Gotta love their fail of a set up... just poking fun.
The machine does not have a laser to center the peg? Then Leica theodolite is better
what is stateÖ technique?
How not to use total station...
there is no total station in this video
why on earth do this video have backing music?????
Please can i adjust verticality of steel coulmn its hight 20 meters by thedolite
Nice
They are setting the instrument up incorrectly
how do they know if they hold the staff horizontally? if it's not horizontal there will be errors, no?
Conheço bem teodolito nível estação total. Sou técnico de instrumentos. São Paulo Brasil Obrigado .
nice work,it brings theodolite setup 2 basic

its height with a "T" sound at the end not heigth
what is purpose of this theodolite in roads
What's a tribyark? Is that something like a tribrach?
Barnekkid Go outside. Walk up a hill. You see? It’s not flat at all.
Oh give 'em a break. They're just college kids, obviously hungover. Well, I didn't learn how to survey, but I now know how a Plumbus is made. So, thank you.
Is that a camera?🤔
I'm just a I-man and all this made me laugh, but it's nice to see the mathatics portion is taught
Verry important and useful knowledge
Not
Good luck I appreciate

Mau nanya dong,,cara perbaiki thelodolit digital terendam air di daerah mana ya,,kalo ga jual butuh aja dah ,,theodolit nya bekas ke rendam air

nice surveyor
🙃
I saw this total station on Amazon and it's a lot cheaper than others. Why is it cheap?
Because it's not a total station. These are theodolites, they aren't a precise, nor as robotic as a total station. A total station will read all the angles and measure them for you (and do the math). They also only require one person to use.
@@dreadfoil hmm that make sense now😢😢😢
But they did not show how to calculate it...
With some cell phone hardware and software this thing could be made easy enough to set up and use that you wouldn't need a video.
I know this is an informative video only but having worked in this for years it pains me. 2 to set up an instrument?! and they take too long
hi .i want to know how to check the level in deep excavation .
I very appreciate with this video
Thanku
One person make it easy!
surveying technician were always impressing me :p
Please students, don't watch this video, there is too much mistakes. This is simple procedural things, please use it properly.
i study for Land Surveying at Agricultural niversity and i found this thank you
01:29 Oh no... The guy is kicking the tripod in the air while the machine is on the tripod... Please, don't do this. Finish your work with the tripod, then set the machine!!
Yeah that is a great way to potentially drop the instrument and cringe

4.80 Feet !! WTF. what scale are they using to measure, imperial or metric????
Just decimal inches. 1 1/2 ft is 1.5 ft. 3 3/4 ft is 3.75 ft. Pretty simple really.
Nice I also surveyor sir
I'm looking for a job . I want to work
NICE
Surveying Online Tutor Where can I get you. I'm a Land Surveyor.
thanks
Très bon explication

this can't be a university video..
my math teacher made me watch this
2:42 Per-pen-dic-u-Lord
Isn't there an app for that?
But the only legal unit for survey plats is the survey foot in the usa. A metric plat cannot be used; it is illegal
But why would anyone have to do that? I mean, just go to google maps and put some dots and build a road!
so good instrument
Step 1... You set the instrament on the tripod.Step 2... Other guy secures the instrament to the tripod!Step 3... Call Boss to explain who's fault it was when the theodolite was smashed to pieces.
it is very helpfull really whoa !!!!
This instrument is Total station not Theodolite
This should be titled how NOT to use a digital theodolite! Unless of course if this was an attempt at humor in which case it also fails at that!
Edward Woodrum hi
Wouldn't a laser or radar speed up this process tenfold?
What would speed it up greatly would be to have someone who knows what they're doing demonstrate the proper procedure
No one uses a theodolite anymore...... Everyone uses a total station now.
sir,
if i have both the occupied stn and backsight stn coordinate taken by gps recorder then how to minimise the error by gps and use those coordinate in total station..please explain
If you want the instrument to be safe, do not allow two people to attempt to lift it simultaneously. This is asking for a mishap.
👏🏻
This vid would do well as a demo of how NOT to setup a tachymeter. At least the beginning.
Ok it's a theodolite, however the same basic rules apply. 1. Use detachable tribrach with a plummet. 2. Only one person is needed for settin up.
Hi, the way u got your 180 degrees is 100% wrong … u must turn the lens 180 degree vertically but not the body of cam turn 180 degree, make sure your tutorial is follow standard procedure …. Thanks for ur information 👏🏼
