My Civil Law professor had us do this exact thing. He had us all call out topics that we were passionate about, and marked down who was pro, and who was con. Then he said, "Your assignment..." He erased the words "Pro" and "Con" on the board, switched them, and told us that when we debated, we had to present the argument of the opposite of whatever we were passionate about.
It was as intriguing as it was disturbing. But it gave insight into the "other" position on whatever it was. This tactic works to create a simple level of empathy, even if you don't end up changing your mind.

Oh my this is exactly how our counseling goes. He makes us repeat what the other person has said so that we showed we listened and understand what the person is saying. Empathy is hard for me and this style of arguing has helped me in that department.

You need to hear my folks argue. They argue on the same side of a subject. What's really funny is when they realize we're on the same side of the subject. They both just stop talking and laugh. They've done it for years.

LOL and LOVE it. While the Mirror Technique sounds like the biggest recipe for disaster, it does actually end well for everybody! Your unwitting participants were awesome, kudos to them! Loving your channel, mama :)

Great idea, Kristina. I love having the kids talk about what they love about each other. They stop feeling angry and can then calmly find a solution.

I like the idea of switching sides. I will try this with my youngest because boy, is she persistant! My oldest is more empathetic and I love that about her. My youngest can definitely see what its like in her sisters shoe and hopefully see why she cannot have it her way.

90% of the arguments that I had with my brother when we where kids, the reason why the arguments that we had occurred in the first because he was determined to argue. He pretended to be mad about something, because he enjoyed bitching.

As a parent, you have no right to get angry at or punish your kids for arguing. You caused the sibling rivalry by having more than one kid.
