I’m ojibwe from southern Ontario. I’m learning how to speak my native language. I have to say it’s one of the hardest languages to learn. And it’s amazing to see this! Our languages almost got wiped out from these residential schools. But I’m thankful for the ones who are striving and fighting to keep our languages alive! Keep promoting!! Aho miigwetch
My grandpa was Algonquin from Northern Ontario and my grandma was Ojibwe from Northern Michigan. My grandpa was not much of a fan of anything to do with his culture because he was taken to a residential school and had a traumatic childhood. Grandma was too, here in Michigan, but she had the opposite response and doubled down on her culture lol.

I do not speak the language of the diné but it is the native language I am most fond of because it is the 1st native language I ever heard spoken by a fluent speaker. A fellow worker was Navajo and would talk to his family on the phone . I could not understand it and when he spoke to other Navajo on the job, he would turn to me and translate what they were all saying so I was included. Very polite and very much family oriented guy and a good worker.
Back in 2008 I was in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Went to a tire shop to get my tire fixed due to having a slow leak. A young Caucasian in his early twenties approached me introduced himself in our Dine' Language. So I started talking to him asking him how he learned our Language. He told me his younger siblings were half navajo. His step dad was from Rock Point, Az. For the summer during school out they were brought here to the rez to help out the elders and learn our language. So by the time school started they were picked back up and head back to the east coast. His parents used to test them and that how they would get their school cloths. He wasn't ashamed to talk our language.
Stories like this is why we need to stop saying “all ____ people are _____” If you were a modern day university student you would have just assumed that the white man was a “privileged” white man with no culture. (Because that’s what they are teaching these kids now) People have beautiful stories and histories and cultures to share and trade.

A lot of the time, Americans (not all, I’m Mexican/American myself) shame others for not speaking English around them, therefore those people grow up thinking it’s shameful or wrong, when it is obviously not.
I love it when Native Americans speak their native language it's beautiful and she's right it is a part of them and it should not be lost I am a majority white but I do have a tiny bit of Native American in me but I can just appreciate their culture so very much it's such a beautiful culture and what my ancestors have done and continue to do let's not lie it's horrible so I pray that these beautiful souls can keep their way of life and their language and just their culture going in these future Generations it is so very important❤
You know how a certain group of people get mad at people speaking any language but English . I sure hope that don't go after these two young ladies . This is one many national treasure we should embrace and be very proud of . In we should be so proud of the we offer native American language in our public schools and college's .
Went shopping at a grocery store today. The cashier didn't speak much of my language and I didn't speak much of hers but, we got along just fine. She and I both laughed and did some stumbling around but we got the job done. I think the problem was we both knew more than we thought of each others language but just too self conscious to go for it. Anyway next time I go to the store I'll look for her. I like hearing other languages. I think they are really pretty and fun to hear. It's kind of like hearing different kinds of music. Be happy people. Life is too short not to enjoy trying new things. 😊❤
This is why the US had Navajo soldiers speaking Navajo in WW2 to communicate so the Japanese would have no clue as to understand it.Oh,on a side note...The US treated the Navajo soilders after the war really bad and years later there were repatriations paid to them and that story should always be told.Oh,let me add on...The soilder that came up with the idea was white and spent time with the Navajo and he understood that the language would be impossible to understand,unless a Navajo person explained how to interpret it.

These languages and cultures are worth their weight in gold, and not just to the peoples who languages and cultures they were but to all of America. You were a country created with built in diversity, you should strive to protect and nuture that. It gives you things no other country can have. Diversity of thought and inherited knowledge being one such thing.
We went to Gallup, New Mexico last year. It had a large community of Natives and they were the nicest people ever. My younger sister even said out of all our road trips this is literally the nicest community we’ve ever met and we didn’t feel uncomfortable or out of place. We stayed a night previously in a majority white area and felt extremely uncomfortable as people kept staring. It’s not like we went to a small town but I guess there were mainly the residents since it’s a weekday.

The brain is designed to create language effortlessly in the first five years of life. You don’t need lesson plans or special props. Just play and interact normally as you do with any baby and they will create the language.

Wow. Navajo was my first language and had to learn English in school. I've been fluent in both languages. Through middle school and high school i was shamed, called REZ, mocked for speaking perfect Navajo. But today everyone is trying to learn Navajo. Times change.

There are several Apache languages , but the Chiricahua is very similar to Navajo

English wasn't even *THIS* country's original language. There were several because there were several Native American tribes.

In Mexico's Indigenous Regions K-12 schooling is done in the native language. Bilingual teachers are mandatory.

Wow. Navajo was my first language and had to learn English in school. I've been fluent in both languages. Through middle school and high school i was shamed, called REZ, mocked for speaking perfect Navajo. But today everyone is trying to learn Navajo. Times change.
