On this episode of thrift flip(pin with ashley ~), we reach peak picnic b*tch as I attempt to recreate Reformation inspired designs from thrift store dresses and skirts. We’re talkin pastel colors, tortoise shell buttons, square necklines, lace hems - the whole shebang. Though some of these thrifted transformations require a sewing machine, some of them you can definitely sew by hand! Hopefully this inspired y’all to get out there and DIY some snazzy, sustainable, and affordable af clothes 😎

That Yellow Dress is a real WIN here. It looks so cute from the front, and your figure looks so nice in it. That lacey hem thing looked yucky before, but now with the new shape looks so cute. LOVE.
The pink skirt - I think two columns of buttons going down the front (below each hip bone) would've been cute. (kind of like those 'double breasted jacket' type details). :)

I love the pink skirt so much!! I just wish you folded the edge over one more time before sewing the invisible hem so that the raw fabric edge was protected. Doing this in the future will stop fraying and make your garments last longer. I don't want to sound mean, I just want to be constructive so you can get more wear out of your beautiful clothes :)

That's actually a historical technique (gusset). It saved fabric on those big crinoline skirts - wider hem and less fabric around the waist

so cute! I have to say, you sharing your fails and laughing about it makes me feel like I could actually try it myself. Talk about high expectations...
for not knowing how to sew your design concepts are actually really good👌🏾! but please, when you’re sewing a seam or two pieces/sides together, match the raw edges of the fabric together first before you sew! that way you’ll have a consistent seam allowance all the way down (for example: 1/2”) and you won’t have to cut anything off, which actually ends up making what you’re sewing smaller. and if you cut something using measurements intended to fit your body exactly, you’ve got to make sure you’re not taking off more than needed. hopefully that made sense, just a lil’ tip from a fashion design student 🖖🏾💕

Hair straighteners are 100% the best way to lay hems flat (or collars, or anything else that needs tedious ironing). Just wipe your straighter down first to make sure you don’t stain your clothes 💕

as a beginner-ish sewer its honestly so stress relieving too see that other people actually struggle when it comes to sewing. Now watching her videos she's grown so much when it comes to using a sewing machine and her capabilities overall. I feel like we never get to see the behind the scenes of the struggle to create clothing and it gets me frustrated bc I'll just be struggling sewing yelling at myself "WHY CAN"T YOU BE PERFECT" when being perfect is nearly impossible

Ashley, I just wanted to come and thank you for inspiring me to try thrifting clothes. Just yesterday, I went to a Goodwill in my area for the first time (I just moved there). When I was looking around, I found the most comfy leather jacket. It's got a soft fluffy black inside that is very warm, and it's even got a little leather belt that can tie around the waist. It's even the perfect size: not too oversized, but I can comfortably move my arms around in it. And it only cost me 19 dollars, yet it's in great condition. This jacket and I must be fated to be together. Sorry for getting so excited over just a jacket, but I'm super happy about it, so thank you!
