      Perhaps he also knew some French? He was a member of the Académie d'architecture in Paris (since 1967) and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), which also has headquarters in Paris. Also knowing French was quite popular among educated people of his generation.

    I think it's common to know 2-3 languages if your mother tongue doesn't really get you places in the world. Nowadays you have limited employment options if you don't learn at least one more globally used language on top of your main one.

    A lot of Eastern Europeans speak at least two languages. A lot of British, American, Australians only speak one language. Native English speakers sometimes don't have the motivation to learn another language because a lot of people in the world know a lot of English or at least some English.

      I am slovak from the northeastern Slovakia, close to polish border. Born Czechoslovakia, proximity and very common exposure po poles and polish language makes me naturally trilingual person)) As a slavic person coming the center of the slavic speaking region, I can easy get serbian, croationa, some ukrainian and russian (as I had to learn it at school at 80s...). Even without learning I am very multitasking in languages)))))

    the volume of the voices is too low ...
    general rule and please tell that everyone (because many fail with that): there are many devices around and without headphones most notebooks and mobile phones suck with amplifying the volume. therefor, test always without headphones (or just use the same volume as professional youtubers do who are aware about such standards and sound for a reason much louder).

    Quite unexpected that in this video there were several immigrants living in Poland who didn't mentioned polish among the languages they can.... 🤔🤔🤔

    • @sylwiatime
      @sylwiatime 8 месяцев назад +2

      It is not easy to learn Polish, so often they don't esp. if they're not from a Slavic country. And when they are Ukrainian it's not so difficult to communicate without learning the language.

    • @VolvoMarkku
      @VolvoMarkku 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@sylwiatime So do you mean that an immigrant who speak fluent Polish is an exception in Poland? just because the Polish language is internationally significantly more difficult to learn than German, French, etc.? It's just so true that the Polish language can't be compared to German or French, unfortunately. Completely different language than these 2 ones. It’s sad to hear that more than a half of the immigrants living in Poland do not know the language at all. 😥😥😥 Here in Sweden almost all immigrants have good swedish skills and as a swede I’m very glad about that… 😎👍👍👌

    • @sylwiatime
      @sylwiatime 8 месяцев назад

      @@VolvoMarkku It depends on many things. For one, I think that people native to some languages have it easier to learn Polish than others. Slavic languages are an obvious example but I also know some Arabic speakers that managed Polish quite well. To be fair, there are people from Western Europe who speak Polish, as well as people from South-Eastern Asia, but I also know some that have been living in Poland for 20 years and still can't speak it, not even on a basic level. People from Southern and Central Africa seem to be more shy when it comes to the language. Maybe it's just my own observation though. On the other hand, it might depend on how long people stay in Poland. Some languages, like English, are easy to learn on the basic level, while Polish comes with a steep curve at the very beginning, as in even simple phrases and sentences are difficult grammatically and phonetically. Usually people learn much easier when they can overcome the first stage. But judging by the Uber drivers bringing me food everyday, 90% of them can't speak Polish at all (not even "Hello"). I think the general assumption among immigrants is, that if they aren't going to stay in Poland forever, the language isn't worth the trouble.
      Also, when you say "fluent" what do you really mean? If you mean that they can master the Polish grammar, then it almost never happens. Often, not even the kids of Polish immigrants in the US, who learnt Polish as their first language, can form single sentences that are grammatically correct. On the other hand, to a Pole, anyone who can communicate in Polish speaks "very well" and we're happy. Once you can overcome the beginning phase I think the language becomes easier no matter where you're from. Often, the Slavic speakers show more problems then, because they assume they're good too soon. And last, there's always the matter of personal language skills. Two people I met that could speak great Polish (to the point where I almost couldn't tell they're not natives) were from Finland and Tunisia respectively. The Fin man lived in Poland for a long time, the other one worked as a tourist guide in Tunisia. He learnt Polish in 6 months without ever visiting Poland.

      I know English and Spanish fluently, and am advanced level in Norwegian and upper advanced level in Dutch and upper intermediate level in Icelandic / Norse / German, and learning many other languages as well! highly recommend learning the prettiest languages Icelandic and Old Norse and Dutch and Norwegian etc 2gether with French and Gallo and Breton, as they are the prettiest languages ever that are as pretty / refined / poetic as English, so they are way too pretty not to know! Iceland is one of my dream countries, despite the cold weather and the long dark winters - but all should learn Icelandic and Norse and Faroese etc, even those that aren’t moving to Iceland, as the Norse languages are really unique and special languages and they are super fun to learn / speak / hear / see etc!

    Starsze pokolenie w Polsce słabo mówi w języku angielskim. Żyliśmy za Żelazną Kurtyną. Wyjazdy na zachód Europy były ograniczone z powodów ekonomicznych i politycznych. Niewielu cudzoziemców odwiedzało nasz kraj. Socjalistyczna szarzyzna nie zachęcała do odwiedzin. Moje pokolenie lepiej mówi po rosyjsku, bowiem ten język był przedmiotem szkolnym. Mieliśmy kontakty handlowe i kulturalne z Rosją. Dziś, młodzi mówią coraz lepiej w językach obcych, ponieważ w Polsce są oddziały międzynarodowch korporacji - znajdują w nich zatrudnienie. Polacy w ramach prowadzonej działalności mają kontakty praktycznie z całym światem. W Polsce kwitnie turystyka. Globalizujemy się. To wszysto zachęca do nauki. Dla osób 60 plus Uniwersytety III Wieku organizują kursy językowe, żeby moje pokolenie jako tako odnajdywało się w szybko zmieniającej się rzeczywistości. Jednak w moim wieku poliglotki ze mnie nie będzie.🙃 Ale mam kieszonkowy tlanslator. Wspaniały wynalazek.

      Polacy są w zasadzie jednojęzyczni. Starsi uczyli się rosyjskiego, ale powiedzmy sobie szczerze, mało jest Polaków, którzy swobodnie byliby w stanie rozmawiać w tym języku nawet wśród tych starszych. Młodzi teoretycznie powinni znać angielski, ale nie znają. Ten Uzbek był za grzeczny, mam tu lepsze przykłady:
      Gość z Anglii i co on myśli o naszym angielskim:
      ruclips.net/video/BJI49SsLPO8/видео.html
      A tu gość ze Stanów:
      ruclips.net/video/AGQAXiOQp6k/видео.html
      Tutaj gość z UK testuje młodego Polaka. Zaczepił tam kilka osób po angielsku i tylko jedna dała radę:
      ruclips.net/video/pbT4JIE4JKE/видео.html
      Japoniec testuje młodego Polaka ze stolicy. Raczej słabo sobie poradził jak na kogoś, kto musiał się uczyć angielskiego od zerówki:
      ruclips.net/video/JUTZwYMFv78/видео.html
      Jak słabo młodzi mówią po angielsku?

      Jak słabo Polacy mówią po angielsku?
      ruclips.net/video/mquOwAVDDkc/видео.html
      „Dzieci w Polsce rozpoczynają obowiązkową naukę języka angielskiego dość wcześnie, bo już na etapie zerówki. Szkoła podstawowa ma obowiązek zapewnić przynajmniej dwie godziny angielskiego tygodniowo już od pierwszej klasy. W ciągu 8 lat daje to ponad 600 godzin nauki języka”
