Just a tip: if you put tulip bulbs in the fridge, make sure you label them clearly! I had a friend who wanted to surprise the family by making dinner for us. He thought the tulip bulbs were shallots and you can guess what happened - the Boeuf Bourguignon ended up tasting a bit ... flowery!
5.30 mins of useful content. 👏 Thank goodness there are still people that can explain simple things in a simple way, I believe many got tired from hours long videos full of stuff we don't need.
Another sweet visit with you Danielle! I honestly feel like we're neighborly friends. In fact, flowerfriends! Thank you for your generosity in sharing your life with us. I'm always encouraged and uplifted! Blessings upon blessings!
This is one topic that I have been experimenting & researching on since COVID started as I love potted bulbs indoors during the cold winter. I used to get this awesome bulb garden at a grocery store that had tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, irises and crocuses & loved it. The issue is I can't find these anymore as the grocery store closed down. You can order a potted bulb plant online but they are like $80, so I thought I try this out on my own. So I bought me a dorm fridge (which my son will use when he goes to college in a few years), and put the bulbs in paper bags labeled for 20 weeks.. Then I potted them up and left them in the basement. I have tried planting the tulips, with a tete a tete daffodil, hyacinth and some mini iris or crocuses. They work semi well. My tulips get really leggy & tall & I don't understand why the ones at the grocery store (basic 6" pot with tulip bulbs) don't get that way being really tall. Last year, I had some success, but I just used some of the tulips that I was planting outside. This year, I researched and got many early tulips - Fosteriana and Early Prince ones... my results have been iffy. I have them in a smaller 6" pot, so maybe that is my issue. I need to have them in a smaller pot so the cats don't get at them as they are poisonous to them. Anyway, I planted 10 different pots with different variations of tulips, it seems the ones that I cooled in the fridge & then planted them up into pots & left them in our cold detached garage or outside in a bin. I also tried potting up some tulip bulbs & waited until they froze & then put them in a plastic bin & insulated them with styrofoam or whatever & then removed that when the temps warmed up for good. I think I was partly successful for this. I was informed that what makes them turn to mush is the freezing and defrosting over & over.... as in the ground they stay one temp. Hope this helps!
Very interesting and well explaining video! What about aftercare? Do you keep the foliage on forced tulip plants and recollect the bulbs/bulblets to grow them in the following season?
Wow! I'm in awe. I'm totally doing this! I live in an apartment. I bought bulbs, but then, management took down the planters on the windows! This will be wonderful!
I have watched several videos, and this one about the balls was great. I loved it. The lady speaks very nice very clearly very distinct and I’m gonna be watching out for more of her videos. Thank you so much.
I just picked up some bulbs at Lowes. In other videos and blogs they say about 8 weeks is plenty of time in the refrigerator. I plan to then direct plant in my raised bed.
Thank you for all the great information. I have tulip bulbs I didn’t get in the garden and thought I’d trying forcing them inside. With your clear directions I’m hoping for success. Just wanted you to know I’m a new viewer and really enjoy your videos.. always learn so much! Have a great week and stay warm. 😊
Last winter I had some bulbs I didn't get planted and instead of letting them sit over winter I potted them up thinking I'd have some early indoor flowers. I didn't know Tulips needed chill hours so when things weren't happening under the grow light I set them in a dark corner. The area in my basement is cooler but definitely not near freezing, maybe 50-55 degrees. After two to three weeks of sitting in the dark, drying out as I didn't water once I moved them, they started to break through the soil. I moved them to the light and started a regular watering routine. I was able to get Exotic Emperor, and Queen of the Night to both bloom. I must've got lucky.
This is really helpful. I’ve tried to pot them up and overwinter them in the unheated garage but they usually just rot - too cold in Nebraska! I have an old dorm refrigerator from my kids’ college days so I can dedicate it to bulbs this fall.
Thank you so much for all the information you provide, I feel like I'm becoming a better gardener! What do you do with the bulbs after they have bloomed?
I’m definitely going to try this next year! We have too many deer and squirrels for me to consider planting tulips outdoors. What a perfect option. Thank you for sharing!
Squirrels started eating my tulip bulbs this year but I read somewhere to sprinkle some cayenne powder or chili flakes so I tried it and they haven't touched them since 👍
Hi ! I love your videos!!! I have a question I order a few tulips bulbs online and didn’t pay attention that some of those tulips said” prechill “and I leave on zone 7 we have a very cold winters, I’m expecting tulips to arrive by December my question is do you think if I put this tulips outside on my garden you think they’ll get damaged because they are prechill if putting outside is like exposing them to more chill
I found some unplanted bulbs that I put in shallow glass vases to force One already bloomed! the others at 4 weeks have lots of leaf growth, even if they don't bloom seeing the leaf growth is a sign of Spring to come!
I tried putting them in the planter and covered the planter to keep moisture out but the bulbs still rotted. I probably should have taken them off the porch where they were covered with snow and tried keeping them in the shed. I like this method much better though and will try it next year. The potted tulips will still have to go outside because of the cats but we'll see what happens. Thank you Danielle!
i have to do flowers for a friend wedding... may 13 montreal canada... i put 350 bulbs outside... im ordering now to do this if the weather is bad or too good lolll
I always find your videos so informative and helpful! I did force tulips this year, but did it in gallon containers and I like your approach better. I have about 6 gallon containers that the tulips are all spent and finished. What do I do with the bulbs now? Do I throw them away or is there a way to let the bulbs stay in these containers and if so, how long? Could I pull up the bulbs and store them some way so that I could use them again to do this next year? Side note: My tulips, even though I planted them 6 inches deep in the gallon containers, got to be 20 inches tall - I had to stake them! I had different varieties and they all got so tall.
Are vegetables in the refrigerator ok when trying to chill the bulbs? I have wanted to try this for years. Your videos are wonderful and so helpful. I've learned a lot from you and I have been gardening for years. There's always something to learn.
Excellent information! Are you able to force bulbs again if after blooming you let the foliage naturally die? If so, do you just repeat the initial process? Have a great tuesday!!
ok, I bought some tulip bulbs in the fall and planted some outside and wanted to plant some now inside for blooms in March. I did not refrigerate them though! i kept them in my cool basement, but certainly not below 60 degrees. the bulbs all have yellow shoots. If I plant these now will they flower? I also have hyacinth bulbs from Easter flowers last year that I saved. these have been in the basement for 9 months. these bulbs are also sprouting. will these flower if planted now? Or should I just put these in the fridge and wait till next year? thanks!
So if you blossom them indoors as you outline (I have several planters doing that now and they are spectacular and such a joy!), once finished blooming and says it’s March, can you remove the bulbs from the indoor pots and plant them outdoors ‘now’ and will they ‘simply’ adjust and be just fine and bloom again outdoors next Spring?
Great idea! Especially since I have challenges growing them outside because of deer and rabbit pressure (never see blooms🙄). Can you save these bulbs for another round of blooming?
Will it hurt tulips at all to cool longer than the necessary cooling period? Ex if I want to bloom them for mothers day can I just keep them in the fridge longer before planting?
Hi. I bought a tulip the other day from Lowe’s but the petals fell off leaving just the seed pod. But it’s not even April. Will it bloom again? Help! Thanks
Question.....what do you do with forced bulbs after they bloom? If you leave them outside in the pot and let the foliage die back and plant them in the ground, will they come back and bloom the next year? Or is forcing a one time thing and then the bulbs are discarded? Thanks!
I have been trying this for a couple of years -- some tulips will bloom again if they died back naturally but many did not - daffodils, hyacinths and other minor bulbs came back after I planted them.
If I am sticking them under a grow light after a week of 55 degree dark environment conditions, what temp should I want them at? Or how much light for the day?
my bulbs almost all failed this year... so sad... they are all mushy in small spots outside and has experienced a heavy squirrel pressure this winter...
Just a tip: if you put tulip bulbs in the fridge, make sure you label them clearly! I had a friend who wanted to surprise the family by making dinner for us. He thought the tulip bulbs were shallots and you can guess what happened - the Boeuf Bourguignon ended up tasting a bit ... flowery!

I've never tried forcing spring-flowering bulbs to bloom indoors, but after watching this, I think I'll give it a shot this fall! Thanks, Danielle!
Forcing bulbs has always intimidated me. Thank you for making it seem doable.

This is so helpful. I have been wanting to force tulips in the tropics!!! Now I feel like I can with this information you put out. Thank you
Best video about forcing tulips indoors. Now I will hunt for Darwin tulips.
I just picked up some bulbs at Lowes. In other videos and blogs they say about 8 weeks is plenty of time in the refrigerator. I plan to then direct plant in my raised bed.

Super great advice! Question, what do you do with the bulbs once the bloom?
Oh my what a wonderful video to share with us.Ive been wanting this information. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
Great information. Especially nice to have blooms during the time nothing is flowering in the garden.
Yes this seams like a way better method I personally don’t have a good place to hold them also in pots . Thank you 😊
This is really helpful. I’ve tried to pot them up and overwinter them in the unheated garage but they usually just rot - too cold in Nebraska! I have an old dorm refrigerator from my kids’ college days so I can dedicate it to bulbs this fall.
that's what I did to force bulbs - bought me a small dorm refrigerator that I don't have to worry about what else is in it
Great tips! I like the idea of a succession of flowers 💐
Thank you so much for all the information you provide, I feel like I'm becoming a better gardener! What do you do with the bulbs after they have bloomed?
I'm curious what she does after they bloom too!
I wanted to ask, where can I get really good tulip bulbs like the one in the video
I’m definitely going to try this next year! We have too many deer and squirrels for me to consider planting tulips outdoors. What a perfect option. Thank you for sharing!
Squirrels started eating my tulip bulbs this year but I read somewhere to sprinkle some cayenne powder or chili flakes so I tried it and they haven't touched them since 👍
What a great idea for next year!! Can’t wait to try forcing my own bulbs!!
Great, clear instruction, thank you -do you have to buy bulbs especially made for forcing?

The Tulips are blooming🌷
Just the info i needed. Thanks. ❤
Do you force daffodils and hyacinths the same way! Excellent video! I definitely want to do this!

Love all your content!!
excellent and helpful video! Thank you!
My zone is 6b so when I can order lily bulbs & how long I store them in refrigerator before planting in December?

How do you prevent from getting gnats? I struggle to grow them in pots even outside. Could definitely use help. Thank you 🙏

What do you do once they have flowered?
After they are finished blooming, do you plant them outside or keep them in the pot for next year?
Good info
Will it hurt tulips at all to cool longer than the necessary cooling period? Ex if I want to bloom them for mothers day can I just keep them in the fridge longer before planting?
The number of weeks is the minimum needed for them to produce a bloom. It's ok if they cool longer.
How many days until the tulip flower dies in the bulb?
Hi. I bought a tulip the other day from Lowe’s but the petals fell off leaving just the seed pod. But it’s not even April. Will it bloom again? Help! Thanks
Interesting thank you

The fingernail flip on three beautiful windows lol
Very nice! 🤍🤍🤍 I keep hearing about people buying bulbs that are already chilled? Have you ever personally grown any that where like that before?
Hi friend! You can buy 5C tulips that come fully chilled. I have never personally bought those❤
