This is actually very smart. My dad and I have kinda been laughing at the show like "Yeah right. There's no way Negan can do what he does and not get shot." This makes you understand how he gets away with his reign of terror. Negan is a genius.
No, no, and no. There is no way Negan can do what he can and not get shot, at least not by external forces. Take the scene Carl raids his place. In the comic he comes out of that truck shooting and fires several shots at Negan before being taken down. On the show, he stands there while Negan whistles and taunts, just not firing for no reason. It's garbage. Hot garbage.
There's no way Negan can do what he does and not get shot because the Writers wanted Negan to live for more than 20+ Episodes instead of the episode where Carl Guns down the Negan Thugs in an effort to kill Negan. Yeah that was BS real bad.
This is actually a load of bullshit, designed to pander to trends and say what his audience wants to hear. No dictator in history was successful by promoting rebellious people, dictators only promote slimy sycophants because that's how they stay in power and that's why dictatorship are usually incompetent. Negan also kills people's friends and then let's them live unsupervised being free to organize against him (which is what happened). Walking Dead is a TV show, and like all TV shows it's brainless entertainment that doesn't say anything about how people actually are in real life.
You all are talking about a show where guys with mini guns and aircraft carriers (the militaries of the world) were over run by the original kind of zombies(the weakest kind). I mean some video game zombies that have all these special kinds of zombies like acid spitting zombies, mutated super zombies, semi sentient zombies maybe. But these? A group of soldiers in heavy ballistic armor with flame throwers and small arms, vehicles with machine guns. How? WW1 literally proved machine guns will exterminate anything dumb enough to come right at them.
A big part of Negan's charm lies in Jeffery Dean Morgan. A lesser actor just couldn't have pulled this character off in such a brilliant way. He's a really underrated, under used actor.

Honestly, this is one of my favorite "The Philosophy of.." to date. Being an avid TWD fan, I found the first half of season 7 to be underwhelming, but Negan to be so intriguing. I knew for certain that, as you pointed out, it was not just his charisma that drew me in to both despise and adore the man, but the pure diabolical nature of how he ran the Saviors. Thank you so much for going into depth on one of my favorite characters in the franchise!
I think Negan's system was always doomed to fail. When you constantly exploit, extort people under you to the point of desperation, they will fight back. And Negan's power and resources, came from the communities who lived in fear of him and the Saviours. When they did their best to appease the Saviours, but were still getting bashed and kicked about, they figured it was time to stand or die trying. It may have worked if Negan developed a better collaboration with them, instead of squeezing them.
That's a very optimist read. People have been exploited pretty severely for thousands of years and only a select few in history have ever risen up. It's very easy to underestimate the amount of shit people are willing to take to avoid confrontation.

I would love to see a "how it's made" video, where you show the process of how you string together the TV show with the philosophy. Do you see the connections as you're watching it the first time? Do you have a round table discussion?
6:14 When Negan asks Dwight "do you want to have a blast from the past with you know who?" I really don't think he means it and it is literally a test, not a reward. He is making sure that he doesn't want his ex anymore and loves to watch this guy suffer, since she is Negan's now. If he said yes, I figured Negan would show him who is boss or threaten him.
The downside of Negan's approach is that he personally exposes himself to danger constantly. Since the real threat he gives isn't that the person who attacks him will be killed, but that the person who attacks him will lose their whole family, then it relies on him still being alive to carry out the terrible vengeance. All it takes is one successful assassination attempt and his society will crumble. Nobody is going to step into his shoes because nobody has been empowered. So it's pretty clear that if you actually are successful in bumping off #1, there will be no #2 bringing the punishment back to your home town. That encourages continued attempts.

Honestly negan is more honorable than rick grimes negan never lies once as far as i can remember while rick kills some of the saviors right after giving them his word that he wouldn't

+graffittisaint philosophy of Jaden Smith is something im secretly looking forward to. im too lazy to come up with a coherent expatiation for that so in just waiting for someone smarter/more dedicated than i to come up with something transcending the meme like qualities of the guy.
Negan was never a villain. He was brutalized early in the new world. He took that to heart, and took it another step further. He knew what people would do if left unchecked. He kept people in check to secure a safe path for anyone under his control. He had an idea of how to move forward, which he later realized was wrong. He changed his views and gave his life willingly to people who wanted him dead. Negan would have been a great leader if he knew at the beginning what he learned later on. He's the best character in the entire series.
Awesome! I think Negan has perfected it over time, and that he understands how to go about some of these problems. Also! Can you do the philosophy of the "Brotherhood of steel" from Fallout? Would like to see your take on it!
I'm remembering something the founder of the GESTAPO said that fits in well with this video -- The trick was to not be everywhere, but give the impression that we are. And people fall in line. I stopped watching Walking Dead this season, but I almost want to start it up again because of this video.
I see Negan as a kind of Leviathan, as the apocalytical world in The Walking Dead matches what Hobbes described as state of Nature. Negan offers safety, but with a cost and with people under contant fear.
I think you did a great job considering how effective Negan is as a dictator. I submit though that the measure of a ruler is not just the survival of their rule but also the survival and health of the nation they rule. I think it would be interesting to look at questions related to that point as well: - Do the Saviors have a better collective survival rate? - Are they living better lives than they would elsewhere in that world? - Will the nation survive the passing of Negan? (Is he indoctrinating Carl to take over in the classic revolution that turns out to just be a replacement?) It might also be worth considering that every person in the Saviors had submitted to Negan's rule, so what does that say about what they collectively want? Fear and moral permissions can be lubricants to authoritarianism, but aren't the gears and power built from deeper needs?
Almost didn't watch this because of spoilers, but I can't help myself when it comes to your content, damn your eyes. Oh well. Good work as always. Now, when is earthling cinema gonna do an episode on Doctor Strange?
I'm going to guess before I watch; Negan views the Social Contract in the same way as Thomas Hobbes but with an enforcement policy straight out of Machiavelli. I'll be back.
The saviors decided to kill Gregory (the leader of hilltop) and Negan was never told. He still doesn't know anything about it. I'm pretty sure that's keeping a secret. If the saviors are such a tightly knit group Negan would definitely know about it. Not such a perfect system after all, huh? Nobody points this out (believe me I've checked) because the entire plot of the show would unravel.
I actually wasn't sure about subscribing to your channel when I was first introduced via Game Theory's "Deadlock". After several months of being a subscribed to you guys I'm glad I made that choice. Speaking of Game Theory, could you do a Philosophy of Destiny when you get the time? Doing some research for myself, I believe MatPat has left out some crucial details that tip the scales of the argument.
Negan is so fascinating because he encompasses all the traits and flaws of an average man with an above average intellect. Most people seem to think he is a psychopath, but he clearly is not. Everything he does, he does so with full clarity and he is brutally honest about it. This is what probably scares people about him, that any ordinary man, faced with extraordinary situations could become a Negan. Yes he is brutally violent and he is an asshole, but he is also empathic and a charismatic leader. He punishes people that disobey him and rewards those who are loyal. He is a sound tactician and an unhinged psycho whenever he chooses to be. This is why he is definitely NOT insane. He knows exactly what he is doing all the time. His greatest trick is making people believe that he is insane. He is also very narcissistic and self absorbed. He thinks he is a god among men and this comes out in the way he speaks and carries himself. He makes himself seem larger than life and he gives his people the illusion that they cannot live without him. He uses his intelligence to manipulate people into doing his bidding and he gets very angry when things don't go his way. He is by far the most interesting multidimentional character that ever appeared on this show and this is why people like him so much.
+Wisecrack yeah, I also commented on the last video about this. Hoping for Ghost in the Shell since it's relevant due to a live action version being made...unless you guys have already made that episode haha :)
I haven't seen the season of TWD with Negan, but from what i see here, i am both ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED OF THE MAN AND HIS WORK, and in awe of what he's done. he somehow made semi-anarchy work.
Dictatorships are destined to to be overthrown by either their own or a stronger power. They're inevitably unsustainable. Anyway, I recommend doing a Westworld philosophy when you get the chance. Lots of material there.
Negan also uses the philosophy of Thomas Hobbes! a stronger ruler could give people directions and point out why humans are so selfish, violent. Either in the apocalypse...or IRL. Negan is more of a political philosopher, not a psychopath or sociopath...
Can you please do a video explaining what postmodernism is I hear it so much but have no idea what the heck it is or rather have a really really vague idea please Jared your my only hope
I think he did almost the best anyone could've in an apocalypse but he made the mistake of letting his people get too out of hand. So when people actually fell in line, they were still bashed around. So people thought they would either stand or die trying. If he just kept his men in line he would've lasted so long.
When my wife and I talk about Philosophy we always associate it with the medical field and how things need to be reviewed or reorganized because there's a lady that she is taking care of at this time, who in all aspects should be dead but is on life support systems. but she cannot be taken off life support because her husband set it up so they won't allow it because he keeps receiving checks as long as she is alive. but if she was taking off life support she would be dead within 30 minutes. her liver is dead her fingers and toes are black, and if she were to code they are actually supposed to initiate CPR to try and bring her back but she is so brittle it would crush her ribcage. this episode just reminded me how a lot of our systems in this world are messed up and need to be reevaluated because they are set up on old evaluations that did not have the technology we have today. As the world changes we need to reevaluate our old systems to cope with the new technology.
If you're doing a philosophy for Filthy Frank, you should do one for Assassin's Creed. It has a lot to say about freewill, determinism, populism, and a lot more! I think you guys would break it down really well and dive into the many different themes of the series. It would be awesome! Speaking of awesome, I'm glad you did a video on Negan. Your last video on The Walking Dead was very interesting with questions like "What does it mean to be alive?". I can't wait to see what you guys have coming next, and I hope you consider my suggestion! Thanks!
ParkerMessick He Kills of some of the main characters who are friends with the main character (Rick) Negan is an amazing character but some people hate him to the main character he is an antiagonist name me one time Rick actually liked Negan
He kills to get his way forces other to comply with him killed people under 18 and made women sleep with them through fear basically he used other for himself and only himself he may of thought he was saving others but all he did cause chaos and death for more people then he saved how would he be a protagonist
Kills to get his way. No he really only kills when necessary. When people step out of line. Like the main group killing his men. So he kills one. Gets punched so kills another to let them know shit doesn’t slide. Ricks ego is too big and he wanted to be on top of things so instead of taking the 2 people killed for 30 some odd saviors they killed before even one of them died, RICK can’t swallow his pride and move on as not being a leader. So keeps trying to get out. Leading negan with no other choice but to try to end it by killing all of them. There are no good or bad people in the walking dead. Alpha bad shit crazy negan and rick tho. They trade places, you follow negan from the beginning you’ll love him, and despise rick
@@parker_messick lol he does kill to get his way killing 1 or 2 people is still killing and I'm for certain you got it twisted rick stories starts out as a dude just trying to find his family later he loses his wife lori after she gave birth goes crazy a bit then has to kill the governor loses almost losing at this point he starts showing no remorse and loses trust for most people the only reason he went after negan was because he was a threat and so he could get food for his people now I don't know much about negan but I will say he has his reason for why he kills cause he trying to save people but on the contrary because he started a war which didn't need to be started if he just left rick and his group alone cause obviously rick can only take so many of his people dying before he decides to fight back negan could've stopped after killing Glenn and abe but he didn't which caused Rick's group to go to war with the saviours

What's with Ramsey Bolton? He was just another sadistic person who happens to be in a powerful position. Is there really more to say about him?
Love you work and dedication you guys always put on your videos. Keep the good work!!!
wisecrack videos are worth watching if only for the all the new names they call Slavoj Zizek
+Abiy lakew thank you. We think about it more than we'd like to admit.
this is way more funnier than id like to admit. see? Were all on the same boat of uncomfortable confessions now.
+graffittisaint
philosophy of Jaden Smith is something im secretly looking forward to. im too lazy to come up with a coherent expatiation for that so in just waiting for someone smarter/more dedicated than i to come up with something transcending the meme like qualities of the guy.
Abiy lakew love Slavoj Zizek. My professor studied wit him!
I love it when they do "The philosophy of..." videos
Awesome! I think Negan has perfected it over time, and that he understands how to go about some of these problems. Also! Can you do the philosophy of the "Brotherhood of steel" from Fallout? Would like to see your take on it!
Negan without beard looks like a completely different person than Negan with beard
I'm remembering something the founder of the GESTAPO said that fits in well with this video -- The trick was to not be everywhere, but give the impression that we are. And people fall in line.
I stopped watching Walking Dead this season, but I almost want to start it up again because of this video.
do the philosophy of Donnie Darko
YEEEEESS
I'll start donating to Patreon if you guys do philosophy of filthy frank
Tryna steal my spotlight?
I'm gonna hafta give you a kiss from Lucille for that.
9:23 You guys are savage as fuck.
I like how you interact with the community at the end!
umm.. negan is not everyone's favorite phycopath that award would go to the joker
he is tho. Not clinically because that term isn't clinical, but it does exist.
Octavio Ochoa Luna spell much?
joker isn't a psychopath, he just acts like one
Mr. Lookback I wrote it wrong on purpose
LoudAngryJerk You're technically correct , the best kind of correct
I adore the philosophy of videos. They are so interesting and amazing.
I think it would be interesting to look at questions related to that point as well:
- Do the Saviors have a better collective survival rate?
- Are they living better lives than they would elsewhere in that world?
- Will the nation survive the passing of Negan? (Is he indoctrinating Carl to take over in the classic revolution that turns out to just be a replacement?)
It might also be worth considering that every person in the Saviors had submitted to Negan's rule, so what does that say about what they collectively want? Fear and moral permissions can be lubricants to authoritarianism, but aren't the gears and power built from deeper needs?
The Redemption of Negan is probably my favorite part about the comic book.
Negan and the Saviours has a pretty neat connection to Hobbian contract theory too
Do the philosophy of Thank You For Smoking. I'm not sure how many people picked up on the allusions to ancient Greek sophists.
These days, *sigh* these are the days I miss. An Innocent teen watching the Walking Dead. I’ll never forget this performance, never.
The Philosophy of 4chan
You guys never fail to make me feel smart.
Batter up Glen.
Kent Dawg Rekt.
Kent Dawg Back to it then!
"And this ones a screeeaaaamer!" Oh fuck wrong show (movie)
Love the cheeky Wilhelm scream at 3.56
Will you ever consider doing the Philosophy of Mad Men?
Great video wisecrack. Good job.
I'm not even part of the notification squad, just happened to make it here early
Kassity Lee nobody loves u
David Campbell oh thank you for telling me the obvious. Much love.
Kassity Lee congrats u played yourself
Never watched TWD and Negan seems like a really awesome character.
Philosophy of Berserk? Anyone?
Jamyuang yes
of Guts
That is a very deep subject
Simple...Guts badassery is a coping mechanism from his tragic past.
Almost didn't watch this because of spoilers, but I can't help myself when it comes to your content, damn your eyes. Oh well. Good work as always. Now, when is earthling cinema gonna do an episode on Doctor Strange?
Great video, but I literally did not need to relive Glenn's death. That shit will haunt me forever.
I have been waiting for this one brilliant
I'm going to guess before I watch; Negan views the Social Contract in the same way as Thomas Hobbes but with an enforcement policy straight out of Machiavelli. I'll be back.
+Bennie Jackson nope
Wisecrack Nope indeed! I love your angle here. Because there was a mention of Machiavelli I'm still giving myself 1 point. 😁
Wisecrack What's the name of the song in the outro
But Machiavelli Said A Prince Or Well A Leader Shouldnt Be Beloved Or Feared To A Point Of Hate Or Blind Loyalty.
Great video as per usual!!
You should do the philosophy of the Saw series
I doubt you guys will do it, but a video about The Venture Bros would be awesome
Chrystal Jennings his right hand has a segment of loyalists who do their own thing from time to time with him being lied to
I actually wasn't sure about subscribing to your channel when I was first introduced via Game Theory's "Deadlock". After several months of being a subscribed to you guys I'm glad I made that choice.
Speaking of Game Theory, could you do a Philosophy of Destiny when you get the time? Doing some research for myself, I believe MatPat has left out some crucial details that tip the scales of the argument.
You've not done archer yet, why not
+Swarmat working on it
Wisecrack you keep saying that but it never comes
Please do an episode on the philosophy of the show community
Did these guys used to be policy debaters?
+Otherized Meme some of the writers, yes
Wisecrack good ole panopticon was a dead give away lol policy debaters love that Critique or at least when I was in high school doing policy they did
Negan is so fascinating because he encompasses all the traits and flaws of an average man with an above average intellect.
The philosophy of George Carlin
Diya Yo Best comedian to ever exist.
That was the best walking dead video I have ever seen
I'd like to see more anime, like Neon Genesis Evangelion, or maybe Cowboy Bebop.
+NANDtheRipper we're working on some anime. Not those, specifically (yet).
Ok, thanks for the answer, I'm looking forward to it.
+Wisecrack yeah, I also commented on the last video about this. Hoping for Ghost in the Shell since it's relevant due to a live action version being made...unless you guys have already made that episode haha :)
Wisecrack What? Do one on Death Note!
Cowboy Bebop would be amazing, even though it only has like only 8 story eps
I haven't seen the season of TWD with Negan, but from what i see here, i am both ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED OF THE MAN AND HIS WORK, and in awe of what he's done. he somehow made semi-anarchy work.
Dictatorships are destined to to be overthrown by either their own or a stronger power. They're inevitably unsustainable.
Anyway, I recommend doing a Westworld philosophy when you get the chance. Lots of material there.
Not really plenty dictators have died while still maintaining their power.
Take for instance castro.
Well.. How about China.. I really think nobody's going to be able to Take down their government.
@@adrianhopu2444 all China has to do is fight the patriarchy it's not as hard as it sounds with enough people you can overthrow a government in a snap
@@ryanthereaper5032 Patriarchy? Google it, boi.
Yes. But same could be said of any form of govt.
Negan also uses the philosophy of Thomas Hobbes! a stronger ruler could give people directions and point out why humans are so selfish, violent. Either in the apocalypse...or IRL. Negan is more of a political philosopher, not a psychopath or sociopath...
Samurai Jack Philosophy Pleaseee
amazing video! :D please do more walking dead and keep doing what you do!
Philosophy of Moral Orel?
I just discovered the Panopticon in Control 😮 You’ve really opened my eyes.
He's one of my favorite villains
This video actually taught me something about myself.
Shot the zombie in the head. Didn't work.
... You guys owe me a new computer monitor. >:(
When my wife and I talk about Philosophy we always associate it with the medical field and how things need to be reviewed or reorganized because there's a lady that she is taking care of at this time, who in all aspects should be dead but is on life support systems. but she cannot be taken off life support because her husband set it up so they won't allow it because he keeps receiving checks as long as she is alive. but if she was taking off life support she would be dead within 30 minutes. her liver is dead her fingers and toes are black, and if she were to code they are actually supposed to initiate CPR to try and bring her back but she is so brittle it would crush her ribcage. this episode just reminded me how a lot of our systems in this world are messed up and need to be reevaluated because they are set up on old evaluations that did not have the technology we have today. As the world changes we need to reevaluate our old systems to cope with the new technology.
haha as a Venezuelan, love the comparisson w/ maduro you should do a vid of him, its absurdo and interesting
Long live the Bolivarian revolution!
Fuck you. Just fuck you. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about.
Yeah, becuz a DICTATOR would TOTALY LET HIM SELF LOSE THE NATIONA ASSEMBY RIGHT?
oh this guy
Cesar Rolando Moreno MALDITO MADURO!
Thanks!
Negan is a protagonist not the antagonist, prove me wrong
Very interesting video. I'd like to see a follow up in the future and/or one looking at the comic version as Negan's story arch is more fleshed out.
The character works in the comics, but is mostly boring on tv....way too much in the way of cartoony monologuing
Yaroslav Czykalovsky The fucking tv show need more fucking fucks. FUCK! Yeah I love Negan in the comics but JDM is doing a pretty good job.
Yaroslav Czykalovsky So you're telling me to read the comics?
They're so much better than the show. The show isn't bad, but cannot stand beside the comics.
He is the best thing on Tv these days, c'mon the tv Negan is Awesome❤️
Negan is hilarious on screen and on pages, his monologs are the best.
Philosophy of Shameless?? A great show that has became even more popular recently. Emotionally and comically intense.
philosophy of filthy frank???
Finally something not about fucking Rick and Morty.
Frog Holding Machine Gun Rick and Morty is the best though.
Do a philosophy of samurai jack throughout all seasons and understand why it took him so long to finally accept the technical world he's in or understand how to become a part of it. (Of course wait till the fifth season is out first). If in the last season it's explained why then explain why the the actions ahku unintentionally caused his own down fall because it seemed like he wanted jack in the future but when he finds out jack is in this time line he's surprised.
