Wow! This, for me is by far the best video you’ve ever made. I found myself constantly either agreeing with what you’re saying or being mind blown by something I hadn’t seen. The stuff about Trevor Noah’s reactions were incredible, there’s no unseeing it! This is also a great example of why you rise above your peers on RUclips. The research you provide, the interdisciplinary knowledge you have (persuasion and communication in this case) and above all the real world experience, you’re out there practicing what you preach every day. That Steve Harvey clip was incredible!
Just one question: I love the way you handled that Apollo crowd, I watched that season of Showtime at The Apollo and noticed how performers’ demeanour towards the crowd made a huge difference. My question is, what do I do if I have nothing to compliment someone on early in the conversation. How does labeling work if there’s nothing to label? And also, is there such a thing as too much labelling? Thanks so much for this amazing video.

Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it. And I love that question so much.
Regarding labelling there is a method I teach in my seminars which is simply this. In most conversations our focus is inwards, how we’re coming off, what we should say, what we should do etc… by simply shifting the focus outwards, or towards the person we’re talking to, miracles can happen. I wouldn’t say keep flattering them constantly that’s really not the goal but whenever there’s an opportunity to sincerely show specific appreciation for something, take it. I’m very often saying things like “that’s a really great point” “thanks for showing me that, I can see how much work you put into it” “that’s so thoughtful of you, not everyone would do that and I appreciate it.”
Sincere, specific and personal are very key!
As for early labelling, don’t stress over it, if there’s nothing, don’t force it. The goal of labelling is not to look for things to label, it’s to point out things we appreciate when they do come up. This distinction is very important for me and makes the difference between the used car salesman vibe and authentic charisma.

@@ivonned32 I think the real problem is that he’s not brave enough to own up to HIMSELF. I think there’s a deep-seated fear of “being his father’s son”. Will’s father had anger issues which sometimes manifested themselves through physical violence. I think that Will inherited some part of that behaviour but is disgusted by it and ashamed of it. Will hated and resented the way his father was and probably the fact that he has it in himself too. I think it just slipped out of him at the Oscars. It seems to me that instead of dealing with those impulses in a healthy manner, Will just pushed them down and bottled them up until the damn burst and the floodgates opened. Chris Rock’s joke was just the last straw. Will snapped and I don’t think he’s been able to put himself back together ever since because he’s still looking for someone else to take up the responsibility.

He’d be admitting something a lot deeper and more vulnerable about himself and his circumstances.. so it’s easier to hide the truth from yourself and dance around the issue. Kind of sad really.

Great video!! I was messing around with Chat GPT while watching this video and decided to ask the A.I. about this Will Smith situation and the answer really says it all. The A.I. program isn't aware of events after 2021 so I asked it in this way and the response says IT ALL 😂:
"Why would an actor slap the host at the Oscar's after the host who is a comedian made a joke about the actor's wife?"
"Such an incident would be highly unusual and likely result in significant public controversy and backlash. Physical violence or threats of violence are never appropriate responses to a joke, even if the joke is about someone close to you.
In a professional setting, such as the Oscars, actors and other public figures are expected to maintain a high level of decorum and professionalism, even in the face of difficult or offensive situations. Responding with violence would likely result in serious consequences for the actor, including damage to their reputation, potential legal trouble, and harm to their career.
It's important to remember that humor, especially in a public setting, can be subjective and often hits close to home for someone. However, it's always better to handle these situations with grace and diplomacy, and to avoid responding with violence. If someone is making jokes that are personally hurtful, it may be best to address the situation through private channels or to simply ignore it."

He also tries to soften the severity of what Will did by the “cook out” comment. I’m sorry, but I have gone to church every Sunday since I was born. No matter how “familiar” people become with taking the Sacrament, it does not become a “cook-out” with friends. Certain things have meaning and are sacred. Even if he doesn't want to talk about exactly what was going though his head at the time, or even if he doesn't necessarily understand himself why he acted like that in that particular moment; he could still say something 'I was experiencing a lot of personal pain, and the stress led to me acting in a way I wish I hadn't, but I take full responsibility and I'm sorry I acted so I inappropriately'. And even if he's not particularly sorry that he hit Chris Rock (idk why maybe he just doesn't like him) he should still be sorry for physically attacking him AND in the middle of him (Chris Rock) doing his job!

I disagree with Trevor's analogy of the cookout (which are typically of all known buddies, who are often equal in rank) and think that's aiming too low to reduce the importance. It would be more accurate to compare it to a company picnic or a corporate holiday party where you have vice presidents, president, etc. The presence of directors, producers, etc. that are all capable of hiring him / advancing his career would create more significance. It's called "Hollywood's biggest night" and the fact that his own wife wore a couture gown then and other actors have spent up to $4M on one gown for that night in the past - that's not just a cookout.

Not sure I agree with the “cook out” idea. This was WS big career affirming moment, Spidey. He had never won the Best Actor Oscar before and it’s THE award that seals you as a legend and affirms your position forever. Being nominated and having your name read out is a fantastic glorious achievement but WINNING this award is what stars aim for. He knew he was going to get it, he had probably been preparing his speech for a long time, and speaking his acceptance would be in front of the world. Turned into a shitshow for him. When I saw him give his acceptance speech, saw the state he was in, saw how he couldn’t keep his face clean let alone composed this to me that looked like a man in a mental health crisis. He was utterly devastated. If he had regained some composure and had some good advice the speech should have been his dignified apology to everyone. He should have been statesmanlike, he should have been standing in the moment of the pinnacle of the highest accolade for his craft. Instead he destroyed himself in temper and continued to wallow in it because he has never admitted he was wrong. And for all the devoted WS fans, they can never move on either, they are stuck in there with him. Shame: in every sense.

This is something I hadn’t really thought of until now. (Background: multiple family members and one ex are narcissists so I have plenty of experience with them.) One of the things these types of people love to do is ruin other people’s big days: in my own personal experience, both my HS and college graduations and my wedding day were impacted by their shenanigans. I think this is what was happening here…like you said, Will and Jada surely knew he would win, he was practicing his speech, etc., but when the moment came, she couldn’t let him have it. When you said he was “in a mental health crisis” wow I’ve absolutely Been there. And while I never smacked anyone, you DO freeze and you don’t know how to react and you can’t believe the person who’s supposed to be supporting you is actually ruining the moment you’ve been waiting for all your life.

I have a theory about what those nuances and complexities are. It wasn't just the one joke or all about Jada. This isn't the first joke Chris Rock ever made about them, and it isn't the harshest. He has made several digs at them over the years, particularly at the Oscars. A lot of the jokes are aimed at Will's sense of self importance and imply that he sees through his facade. He mocked their decision to boycott the Oscars. He pointed out that he still makes a lot of money doing silly, lightweight movies while complaining that his more serious movies don't get the same recognition. Will's humor is more of a social tool. He laughs and makes jokes to make people like him. Chris Rock makes jokes like a comedian and expresses himself with brutal honesty. That cutting humor had been working on his insecurities for a long time. That rather lame joke that he reacted to violently was the last straw, because it caught him off guard. Notice that right before the GI Joke, Chris said something that sounded like the beginning of another dig but ended up being a compliment to Will. Will had braced himself for another cutting joke, was relieved and thinking maybe Chris was going to be nice to him after all, and was blindsided by the joke at Jada's expense. Also, remember that he said during his speech that in the business you have to take abuse and smile and act like everything is ok. I suspect that was how he perceived his interaction with Chris Rock for quite some time. *I want to clarify that I mean this is Will's perception, not Chris's intention or objective reality.

He is right on point: Will is an actor and employed a lot of tactics to sell the audience.
1.The excessive eye wipe, may have been from Menthol tear sticks/spray applied before going on to the interview to evoke the audience to empathize with him. Hence the excessive eye wiping to cry on command to sway the audience.
    2. He used psychological manipulation to compliment and structure the conversation to disarm the well known nice-guy interviewer Trevor Noah to ensure he wouldn't go harshly in line of questioning. Then did endless mirroring with Trevor to show camaraderie with him to gain his "allegiance" in what he is saying.
    3. Starts by denying recollection, distancing himself from accountability and diminishing the severity of his actions while expressing "growth" and self reflection to gain favor of humanizing his error in the eyes of the audience. Classic disassociation and in-accountability.
    4. Will is calculated, so sure he had coaching on script/what to say to ensure best reactive outcome and positive feedback to his interview.
    5. Tried to rationalize with the audience by sympathizing with the audience giving mundane examples to rally their emotional responses, Generalized sympathetic references. Very manipulative.
    6. Truth be told, if there was true remorse in this interview, he would have involved Chris Rock and named him if it was truly an apologetic interview. Truly repentant people don't distance themselves in the acts by saying that place, that situation, that moment with subjective details. You own up to the rawness of the action and speak through the facts even if its painful, when its sincere. But in this case, Will is very distanced, he uses a lot of falsities to gain favor and victimization instead of owning the error and admitting wrong. Partly could be to avoid legal retribution...but still. Highly scripted interview.
    7. Heavy involuntary/subconscious driven eye blinking is normally indicative of lying or exaggerations.
Sorry, but this is what the facts lead to. Great review. This is the similar assessment I had and I have a degree in psychology. Very accurate assessment albeit a bit more cautious and tame, I'm more blunt. Bravo

Your video gave me alot to think about. When I originally watched the interview with Will and Trevor, I really wanted an answer as to why? I adore Trevor and thought he was a great choice to break his silence. I felt he had enough time to digest it away from the media. I would have easily accepted if he had just came out and said "I screwed up, and it was unacceptable." As I watched the interview I also felt something didn't flush.. In any case it probably is none of my business. Will Smith has always been a great source of brightness and talent to me and to much of the world. I really wanted him to be above it.
I wonder if the same labeling goes for written communication as well. Do people respond to that sort of respect in written communication as much as verbal or much less?
I subscribed and look forward to more videos from you. Normally I would never click on body language videos, I assume they are click bait for gossipy content. Your video gave great insight into my own communication with others. Thanks

Unfortunately unless Will completely goes rogue and goes off script, we will never truly get complete honesty. In Hollywood image is everything and we must keep in mind that Will has an entire PR team who work feverishly to keep Will's well established reputation intact as best as possible. Finally given the well known fact that Will is a very adept actor who has honed his craft to an absolute near perfection, we should not be so naive that even his body language is absolutely pre-meditated, rehearsed, scripted etc.

There's no doubt the man has a lot going on in his life. Doesn't take a genius to see that. However, no matter what you have going on nothing justifies physical violence against another human being. I'm not sure there's anything he could say that would change my mind about his character at this point in time. I'm certainly appalled at the way the academy handled his behavior. Definitely not interested in any future movies/shows he's involved with. He crashed his career. There are consequences for behavior. People generally don't understand this. Will is still making excuses instead of owning his mistakes. Every time he says, "you know," he loses credibility. There's a lot of anger here.

I think that he’s afraid of being truly vulnerable; probably thinks it makes him look weak or that people will turn their backs on him if he were to expose the real reasons. I think that it’s possible that he’s being emotionally abused/gaslighted into remaining silent on the truth. I believe that if he were to get outside help, remove himself from the abuse, and receive a strong support system…that the truth would come out. But, this is just what I think. I don’t really know him or Jada up close and personal. I do hope that they all get the help and the healing they need, though.

There's also a key difference in language that demonstrates Will's subtle narcisissm: "I flew for thirty hours", as opposed to "I was on a plane for thirty hours". Since we can assume that Smith didn't fly the plane himself, his unconcious choice to make himself the active actor (pardon the pun) in the sentence shows just how he thinks of himself.

What he's doing by calling it nuanced etc is refusing to apologise or acknowledge that he's even wrong. He should have been arrested, not given an award and a speech. I bet the guy that tried to slap the other comedian a few weeks later was arrested.

To me, Will Smith always seems like he has deep-rooted insecurities and is always seeking validation. That would explain why he is constantly acquiescing to his domineering wife and may even be why he chose a wife who's hard to please. My guess is that he had a parent (or both) who he couldn't please and so he became adept at winning people over and entertaining; anything for acceptance. He's still trying to please that person from his early years in his relationships with other people. Often times we become comfortable with the dysfunction of our childhoods so that, even if it's a negative thing, we seek it out because it's familiar. I think that's the case with him. I can't imagine any other reason why a guy as successful, attractive, and charismatic as Will Smith would allow himself to be humiliated by a woman like Jada without leaving her.

It's so important to be kind and respectful, to try always to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Will Smith is talented and charismatic, not stupid, and has the resources to get help/therapy/mentoring. Yet for whatever reason, he is evasive, manipulative, less than transparent, brazen enough to strike another person in full view of the world and not evince any authentic remorse nor offer any authentic apology, nor be candid about what he thinks and feels about such behavior. Instead he tries to use all his people skills to win sympathy, approval, and forgiveness. This kind of slippery refusal to deal with it like an adult leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
