Antony, the fantasy is much easier and glamours then the reality of the Shinobi, the real skill requires much more training and time, with an element of danger and mental/physical requirements. This problem is happening in the Martial Art world, the fake "Mcdojo schools" clearly out number real hardened schools that teach a person to fight and defend themselves. I guarantee you the schools that don't teach a person how to fight have a lot more people in them. Lets look at the Samurai! what were they like....hardened warriors, add Japanese culture of extreme focus and devotion to skill. How does that fit into the western world and can a cult, or school, make money off of that. My friend the fantasy is marketable, $$$$$ and safe. When you were trying to bring these people together so everyone could get the real Ninjutsu I knew they would not let go of what they had, that's worship from people (ego) and money.

In 1983/4 my instructor taught throwing knives and discussed throwing spikes in ninjutsu, but absolutely told us to stay away from shuriken/throwing stars as they are gimmicks for movies. So, to me this lines up with what I know about ninjutsu.

Well, clearly if it says "throw it like a shuriken" they knew how to throw a shuriken... But that probably comed from their training as soldiers outside of ninjutsu(be it samurai or ashigaru training)

I think if they were open and honest, there'd honestly be nothing wrong with using ninja to inspire your martial arts. Plenty of martial artists are inspired by the jedi and the jedi arts are a useful exercise. Plenty of HEMA guys are inspired by knights and vikings and with all of these we can certainly apply the principles of one on one to full scale war, as Musashi said.
But this would require honesty of what you're trying to learn. Used as a basic training, such things as bujinkans 9 ryus can be a great start, if we can take out the flowery crap. As can any Ryu.

Really enjoy your work and your passion and I plan on getting your books. While I agree completely that Hollywood and whatnot have turned the ninja into an exciting mysterious super assassin, I don't completely understood your view on some of this. You're acting as if everything had to be written down for it to exist. I would think this people would not be overly open with what they choose to use or how they used it so to me just because it's not written down doesn't mean it wasn't a thing. Obviously it doesn't mean that it did exist either but it really seems impossible to know for sure what is legit and what isn't. As far as shuriken go, you said that the samurai used them and we know a lot of ninja were samurai so.... wouldn't that make sense that ninja used them as well? I'm sure others have made this same argument but I would love to hear back from you.

I think perhaps barring the fact that someone wants to call everything ninja for the sake of drawing someone in purely for money and no concern about accuracy there are a few reasons maybe why people persist in teaching non historical ninjutsu as historical.
    1. I think one reason everyone wants to pull all samurai arts into shinobi arts is simply because ninjas are cool. And I mean that seriously. The attitude and portrayal around ninja caused by Hollywood and the ninja boom even though it was inaccurate caused the mysteriousness and epicness that everyone associates with the ninja. All my life growing up and still, whenever anyone does anything cool or mysterious like catching a falling object or sneaking up on someone to scare them, it's always referred to as 'that was very ninja of you', or, 'that guy is a freaking ninja' kind of descriptions. No one ever says something like 'that guy is a freaking karate kid', at least not in my experience.
    ruclips.net/video/jHSAAOeJ6m0/видео.html
This link goes to a skit by a comedy group where they refer to a spider as a ninja at 1:02 in the same vein that I am describing as an example. And I think that the aura of awesomeness around that figure even though historically incorrect is why people want to pull anything awesome, cool, stealthy, martially awesome, and call it 'ninja', because ninjas are always referred to and used culturally as the ultimate example of a bad a**, in any situation and so people just want to affiliate with that.
    2. I think that some people just don't know enough to know better. I know that sounds absurd at this point but I remember when I started studying Ninpo years ago I had no idea who you were or your research. I just thought I was studying a martial art practiced by ninjas and that's all I thought. And no students in the class knew any better either. It wasn't until I found your books and actually read them on my own that I learned the full history. And I'm also the only one in the class who has read them or even knows who you are other than the teacher beyond occasionally hearing something read from the Bansenshukai but never looking into the work beyond that and so not learning anything more than the paragraph read to them. I know that most people know about you and your work but I think a lot of people are just still ignorant and don't think to read anything like what you have published because they don't know about it and don't think to look for it or are too busy with other things and only take the martial art as a hobby or side focus and the kind of study that your books would be is beyond their interest.
    3. I think that the third reason could be if a teacher knows about your work and the real history of the ninja they may just not want to admit it and so go into a blank out for various reasons, to keep their money, or perspective of what the ninja are and so on. Or they don't want it to be true so they ignore what you have discovered, unwilling to give up what they have identified with for so long as it has become such a part of how they view themselves.
    4. I think a fourth reason could be that a teacher knows about your work and doesn't believe that ninpo is a false ninja martial art even if they still believe the history you have exposed is true. People can be very loyal to their beliefs and hold to an unknown, believing along the pattern of, 'well it could be true, or it might be, or I don't know for sure so I'm going to keep studying ninpo and not worry about it'.
    5. I think some people just don't care in the sense that if ninpo is not a specific to the ninja martial art, then that's fine, but on it's own it's still in their mind a good and effective martial art in its own right even though its origins are not authentic and really not known, so they practice it anyway for its usefulness. Thereby getting a good martial art and not worrying that its not ninja specific.
I personally don't know why people reject historical shinobi no jutsu. I think that the historical true version of the ninja is far more epic, bad a**, mysterious, cool, awesome and want to be like that in skills, than the modern untrue version. Because the modern version is just a martial art more or less with weapon skills. But the historical true version is historical martial war arts, arson, yo-nin, in-nin, espionage, messages, war skills, strategy, communication, traps, escape and evasion, and so on and is WAY cooler and more involved. I drip with anticipation at your books to read them and learn what a real ninja would have known and thought like. So I don't know why people hold so hard to the current not true version other than the 'cool' image it has in peoples minds. I know for myself even though I know the historical truth of what a ninja was I still picture the black clad masked person with a sword on their back disappearing into smoke when I think of a ninja and that image still holds a lot of value for me, but I don't tell people that that image is what real ninja were. So I don't know. Those are just my thoughts. I appreciate your work, you have done so much for my life and my knowledge because of what you have done and the books you have published. It has had a long reaching effect on how I act and behave and the things I pursue. Keep it up. I support you and your work and am very grateful that you exposed the truth about the ninja, because if I want to study the skills of a ninja you have allowed me to do just that. Thanks again.

Antony with all due respect, there was over 52 clans in ninjutsu natori being one of them. The iga and the kouka were among the most political and dominating clans but there are many that still exist fuma wich is lead by soke hashino. He doesnt advertise as loud as some of the others; Hatsumi claiming iga, and Kawakami claiming kouka. My point in being i started to doubt your intensions with this video but then i saw your other one in which you go on to explain your intentions clearly then i gained respect for you. Its bad enough how the world looks at the whole system in general. But when we (the ninja community ) bash each other and i heard ansou Christa brag as well, common this has got to stop back then the government saw what we could do and they feared us but today hasnt changed we are about to see a political repeat of what happened to Japan with the government wanting to take control. When i first started i had the same attitude everyone else did but as i grew in my skill my heart was towards anyone who wanted to study. Each clan held there own secrets and techniques but they held honor for each other as human beings outside the battlefield or mission. My years training with Togokure has tought me that i am willing to bow low to my fellow man or sister (kunoichi) are skills are getting ready to be tested if you guys havnt been keeping up with current events. I truly feel that nin was a spirit it chooses its deciples not the other way around. The spirit of the old clans is starting to rise Iran has already combat ready there kunoichi. Until that day comes we need to really respect the enthusiests or the students or deciples of this lifestyle. Myabe im talking out of my other end or maybe not but at least give it some thought i love your work.

Was shurikenjutsu taught to all samurai? Weren't at least some samurai also secretly ninja? Wouldn't that mean that it's possible at least some ninja used shuriken?
Also, it's perfectly logical to base conclusions on what's written in ancient documents. But it seems a little illogical to come to any conclusions based on what's NOT written. It also seems a little silly to brush aside oral tradition. Of course it's a lot easier for someone to fake, but that doesn't invalidate all oral tradition.
When I was in the Air Force working on AWACS systems, one bit of orally transmitted technique was that in the heat of battle when a critical component on the plane goes out because of a bad wiring connection, using a foil chewing gum wrapper can work to complete the circuit. This would NEVER be written in a technical manual and would be frowned upon under normal conditions. The point is that in any endeavor that requires the use of various techniques, there are always going to be many things that never get written down, for whatever reasons.
This is further compounded by the fact that ninjutsu was a very secretive skill. Walking around with your super secret ninja skills manual could get you killed. Seems to me that oral transmission would have been the preferred method of passing knowledge along.
As a Bujinkan practitioner, I don't really care which ryu a particular technique or weapon comes from. To be honest, I don't particularly care if a particular technique even "works" or not. To me it's all about exploring and coming to a deeper understanding of the core principles of taijutsu from which springs an infinite variety of techniques and ways of using the body in a very energy efficient way. These core principles also can't really be written down. Sure you can try, but really understanding them takes a lot of practice with actual people and a lot of mentioning of certain things at particular times to aid ones growth.
However, I do appreciate what you're doing and find it very interesting. Whether the ninja actually used shuriken or not doesn't really matter to me, but it is an interesting line of inquiry. I do imagine though that the ninja carried some kind of weapons when on a mission, and shuriken might have been a good choice given their small size, portability, and versatility. And if I had been a ninja in those times, I think it would have been wise of me to be as familiar as possible with any weapon I might come across, and have the ability to generalize the application of my body movement to any weapon available to me.
    Looking forward to more videos!

@D'lish Donut I'll have to watch again when I'm a little more awake. What you're saying makes sense, but what he say doesn't, maybe it's the way he's saying it.

@D'lish Donut That makes sense to my logic circuits and I'd imagine it could be a lot less than 15%.

ANTONY, you should sell yours book in Iran much. There is a huge popularity about training as Ninja among women and girls there, you should sell thousands and thousands of yours book there. Big time. But they must be in that Ninja/Kunoichi costume, that is the point there, because of religion. But anyway. No, I am not from there. Sound interesting?

Antony do you realize what you have done now mate? You have defeated all of the fake ninja masters over the world, with your facts and research. Now you are the only real Shinobi Sensei alive, and as somebody who has studied all of the techniques in your books, I have one question to ask.
    Where's my black belt sensei?

I think ive come to a final conclusion with all this: Shinobi no mono is like fight club the bottom line is we dont talk about shinobi no mono. Hanzo Hattori might have been the worst ninja in history he allowed himself to become to famouse!

I think it's time to stop preaching. Your info has a relatively new spin on the subject. I may take decades, got that? Decades to change this stereotype.

I totally agree with you on the subject of shinobi being military. I understand though sometimes to draw agents from different places/ non military sources might decrease the chance of being burned. I feel it will take time to transition from shinobi jutsu being a self contained martial art, to the idea it was another jutsu to be added to a samurai tool kit as needed. Some folks out there have spent 40 years believing in the martial art narative. That's a life time. Your not gonna change them overnight. They believe in what they were taught..fervantly. Let em go. Let them come to you. Truth will out.

Another argument is the romantic concept of the ninja. Every one knows Arthur and Camelot are fiction yet the myth endures. Glamourized ninjitsu has cool uniforms, way cool weaponry, tactics that might work. You come along and take a leak on their dreams with the cold light of fact! How dare you! Use more psychology in your presentation. Heiho, I've always I get a more positive response if I leave them an out or escape in the argument.

One other aspect is drawn from commercialism. They make money selling the ninja school. They sell ninja products. You are diametrically opposed to their profit margin. No one would buy their contraptions if they followed your train of thought. So they will act as though your accurate but incomplete.
