Even in the case of improv heavy DMing styles, you could always call for a snack/bathroom break while you read up on the monster’s abilities. One of the ways the book lends itself to creating encounters on the fly is with its monster role categories, allowing you to grab, say, a monster each with the Artillery, Soldier and Controller roles at a glance to throw together an encounter with some built in strategic depth.
But new DMs should certainly beware, I agree. If you struggle with the complexity of vanilla DnD’s combat as is, this book probably won’t do you any favors.
    Great review.

Excellent advice! I know many DMs get worried about stopping the flow of the game to look stuff up but players often rarely mind. I know I still get worried about that too even though I know better!

Great video. As soon as have some spare cash, I'm definitely getting this book as it matches my current DMing style.

    How do you run minions?

Hey! Thanks for the question! It's largely similar, but I have it such that the players need to meet a threshold of damage in a single instance for the minion to perish. For example, say I set a minion's HP to 3, then they need to take 3 damage from a single attack to be knocked out of the fight. Darn near just as simple as them dying on any instance of damage but makes them a little more dangerous and I can tune it real easy. I just found this way, my players took minions much more seriously while still letting them feel like epic heroes cutting through hordes of baddies!
