    There is a calmness and control to how you dance today. Not to say that both are not beautiful.

      That’s exactly what I was thinking. “Young” Katie looks much more frantic and flings her arms and legs more than “current” Katie.
      (I have zero ballet knowledge beyond what I’ve picked up from this channel so I’m sorry if my terminology is wrong)

    • @kobaltkween
      @kobaltkween 4 года назад +7

      Yes! That's exactly what I was thinking. The older one is more youthful in that it seems a little more frenetic, in the way that we all tend to be when we're young. The newer version is more deliberate. Its grace makes me feel more peaceful.

    I love how baby Katie's dancing is like a spring chicken, so vibrant and energising. I also love mature Katie's control, elegance and powerful presence. It's like watching young princess Aurora grow into a queen!

    Seems I am not the only one who sees a calmer and more controlled dancer in the newer footage. There is a finish now that makes for more elegant transitions between all the shapes and lines you are creating. They might only be microseconds, but it really looks so much smoother. Lovely as always.

      @@kathryn_morgan She is true... You're more controlled in the way you choose to express your feelings (maybe cause you're also professional) through dance... I just wanna say ....................
      Congratulations!!

    Literally first thing I thought was that you looked a lot calmer/less rushed in the new footage! The video from 10 years ago is beautiful and all (the costumes are truly to die for) but I still found it difficult to take my eye off the new for longer than a split second. You truly are a beautiful dancer! There's a sort of serene effortlessness to you now. I'm not a dancer myself (ballet enthusiast maybe? lol) but I know it's harder than it looks (I did take a few casual classes at 16) and you really do make it look easy!

    I am not a dancer, but I am a retired violinist so I understand body response with respect to music. Sprightly/calm are indeed good comparisons. I would add that your current dancing is more nuanced. You are growing in a lovely direction. Love you so much.

      Thank you! On no! To be honest, the backlash was minimal. The outpouring of love and support plus other dancers coming out to tell their stories FAR outweighed any negativity. So that really showed that we needed to talk about it. I didn’t post for a few weeks because I wanted to let that video sit. I didn’t want to take away from it or anyone else’s story. ❤️

    I feel like the calmness and control you mention is especially noticeable anytime you have a high extension. 2010 Katie hit it hard and fast, while 2020 Katie did what we in animation call an "easing"... which is to say it's just as high, just as powerful, but it hangs at the top a split second longer with more control. Both sides of the arc have more control and float-- overall there's just more style. Both are beautiful on their own, but 2020 Katie is my personal favorite! I hope you do more of these! Great rewatch/engagement potential as I wanted to focus on each side individually!

  • @dreamsend4072
    @dreamsend4072 4 года назад +5

    Something I love about this comparison is that 2020 feels like watching Aurora as the queen she becomes long after the end of the Sleeping Beauty story. 2010 Aurora is the princess: youthful, energetic, even frantic. But 2020 Aurora has a calm confidence surrounding her and an air of wisdom not seen in 2010. She's has experienced life and maybe she's revisiting her younger self by performing this same dance.

  • @shruthinarayanan276
    @shruthinarayanan276 4 года назад +16

    there's a certain lightness you have now compared to when you were younger. i'm not sure if you were more focused on the different steps and executing everything perfectly back then but now you look like you're just immersed in the dance, and that is a truly beautiful look :)

    Hi Kate! I’m around the same age with you. And I was also diagnosed with a chronic and “invisible” illness in these ten years. Also it took me long time to get the true diagnosis. I also dance, though not professional. So I wanna say I totally understand the “pre-sick” feeling. Things will never be the same since you are sick. Sometimes it’s bitter to think about the beautiful old days. Hang in there!

    I like the sharp, coltish quality of the 22 year old Aurora and the higher arabesque and higher a la second and better technique. She has more "attack". Sort of Tannaqil Leclerqian. I wish the 32 year old Aurora had the Aurora costume. The chenees are better in the 32 year old Aurora. We love you so much Kathryn!

  • @epeeist2008
    @epeeist2008 3 года назад +1

    Honestly there no comparison: Kathryn 2020 dances through the musical phrases with maturity and nuance and understands the significance of each step within the context of the sequence. Her artistry and expression is just lovely and really communicates with the audience. I didn’t want to take my eyes of the screen. Kathryn 2010 is segmented: this step then this step then this step without the understanding of phrasing or breathing or rubato. She anticipates downbeats and rushes rather than allowing the audience to enjoy each movement to its completion.
    More Katie 2020, please 😁

Less rushed, more mature, comfortable with herself, grounded. Loved both!

    Katie, you are a true inspiration. Before beginning a career in figure skating, I took ballet for “5” years. Covid has made it quite difficult to skate, though I have found a renewed interest in ballet and began taking adult classes. Kathryn, I just want to say thank you so much. You are such an inspiration to me as a dancer and as a woman. I'm 19 and over the past year and a half I've gotten back into dancing after leaving an abusive ballet studio environment. I came across your videos during quarantine when my studios closed, and I loved following along to your barres. Thank you for being so honest and for making a space where ballet can be the beautiful art form that it truly is, thank you for this positive space. Thank you for speaking out. I love you so much! I'm so glad you're back.

    I love the calmness in the current dream variation 💕it made me think about how Aurora was asleep for about a century, but she has been in a dream realm, alive and growing as a person. She has been ruling there and chooses the prince to wake her because he is someone who sees how much she has grown in this beautiful place of hers, not just some guy who wants to kiss the dead girl. I love this!! I feel like this is very much a reflection of life in general. Most people have their 20s be a bit more chaotic because they are still finding themselves and then in their 30s they are more sure of themselves and have more control (referring to just life experiences in general). It was great to feel that in your dancing. It honestly shows that it does get better with time.

    I felt your recent dancing was so soft and lovely... like a feather flying in the wind. Your younger dancing was very beautiful and musical too but it lacked the softness you have today. Love you!

    Absolutely beautiful! The Aurora back then has become a Queen now! Can you sometimes do a video on how to do Giselle’s/Willie’s hairstyle please?

    I can see the maturity in the 10 year later. I like it.

    This is too funny because right after you posted this on Instagram I went back and re-watched all of your Aurora commentary videos! Ditto to what everyone else has said, you and your dancing age well like a fine wine 🍷 thank you for letting us continue to watch you outside of formal performances, I missed that last year!

    This was so interesting! "Little Kathy" was a firecracker but you got so graceful and sophisticated! Princess Aurora became Queen Aurora. Such a great example of how dancers (anyone really) changes with years and experience.
