I don't think this song is sad. It's a memory of Mari and her kindness, not her death. It's closer to bittersweet in a way. You know Mari is dead, but you also know her kindness is everlasting, and she's still there with everyone because of it.

When I finished Omori I had a dream, In wich I was with my friends on the street, this song was slightly playing and the colors were the same as the dreamworld. One of my friends asked -Do you guys think if a electric pole falls down it will knock the others off? -Like a domino? -Yea In the dream I was just there listening to this meaningless conversation and out of nowhere I was the happiest I was in a long time, even some tears came down. When I wake up I didn't help but cry out of joy for the friends I have. I know you guys would never read this, but from the bottom of my heart I truly love them

After listening to this for a while I feel like this song perfectly fits Mari specifically the headspace version of Mari though. This song just kinda has this slight feeling of safety which shows like how Mari is always in a place of safety with the picnic blanket and how Sunny always wants her to be protected, but it also has a bit of perfect eerieness that just kinda reminds you that the headspace is just Sunny's imagination and that this interpretation of Mari isn't real and stuff. I dunno much on music but these are just kinda my thoughts while listening to the song
SPOILERS: Your point about how headspace Mari isn't real because Sunny always puts her in a place of safety has a deeper meaning when you learn that Mari jumped into the lake to save Sunny from drowning, putting herself in danger to save him (instead of merely "helping" him, through her advice and rest)

I haven't played the game but I've been watching other's gameplay just for a couple of minutes and I'm already attached to it. It's a great game despite it's long development though some might be against it.
SPOILER so, I just realized that Mari during the whole game does not go around with the rest of her friends because that is Sunny's dream, who knows he cannot bear the fact of seeing her die during one of the various battles. the fact that she stays on her picnic tablecloth, safe, waiting for others to join her to spend a moment of peace and harmony together reassures him more. this theme plays in the moments when Omori and the others meet Mari. it gives me a feeling of reassurance, probably this is how Omori must have felt when in the game he found Mari waiting for him at the various checkpoints.
I want this comment section to be like one of those where people come looking for comfort, a safe place to go back to after a long time or a bad moment. In these times, everyone needs that kind of place.

i love this song. it makes my eyes tear up and it makes my chest hurt and it makes me feel safe and happy. omori means so much to me. i have always had rocky mental health and could deeply relate with sunny and basil. i got the good ending and genuinely cried so much. it filled me with such... hope. even after everything that happened, even after the pain and the suffering that sunny had to go through, he found the courage to face the truth. even after everything the entire friend group went through, they persevered and they helped each other and they stayed together. i guess thats what really got me about the story. i dont think ive ever been so touched by any game or piece of media in the past. it just.. it hit somewhere really really close to home and opened up wounds i didnt even know i had. there are so many childhood memories that sunny has that i can understand and relate to. the days hanging out with friend, fun beach trips, riding home tired and happy with the sun shining on my back, standing in line for the first day of school... and the loss of those friends, the loneliness and the fear that began to pervade my life after. i love omori because there is something in it for everyone. the story seems really tragic and sad, and yet there is something basically everyone can relate to in it. omori will always be bittersweet for me, because i found it when i was in a bad place and it has become a comfort and escape for me, so much so that i feel that im losing myself and my real life to be with these fictional characters. i am quite literally becoming sunny and using a game about escapism to escape. but at the same time this game means so much to me and has really helped me. it gives me hope that no one is irreversibly broken. it gives me hope that there is someone that can understand me. it gives me hope that there are people who can persevere. and each of the characters brings me so much comfort. im ranting now, but i just... yeah. i wanted to say how much this game means to me. i havent been able to really cry for years and this game broke something in me. every time i listen to this song i can shed a few tears. i had never allowed myself to feel like that before. i had never been impacted so deeply by a game before. i had never loved a game so much before. i'm sad that it isn't real, but happy that i got to get to know these characters, even if they are just fictional. and this song always makes me cry, and always will.
I had the same emotion with To The Moon.. that game broke me so much, even more than omori. Maybe omori didn't made me too sad because i was already prepared after playing To the moon? Probably
i feel the same way. i relate very much to sunny. i felt like i was getting the hug i desperately needed for years after playing and sobbed tears of relief. i feel it'll be easier for me to have compassion and forgiveness towards myself moving forward because omori has changed my perspective on guilt. it truly does feel hopeful.
Bro when I first played this game and first saw Mari and heard this song, I knew this song was gonna make me cry eventually in the game and it sure fucking did.
This song was probably meant to represent how "Omori" felt relieved to see her big sister patiently awaiting for him and his friends arrival. Away from combat, with the safety of a picnic blanket. But as the big sister, she couldn't stay still all the time, it was in her nature to protect her little brother after all.
"By your side" is next to the final duet a song that drilled deep into my heart in a painful way, at the beginning I just felt a bit sad, of the melody, which is also a cheerful and harmonic song... But now I just cry if I hear it... If I think about the fact, that this ist meant to be Maris own theme... How they remixed it multiple times in the story progression and how it plays and plays at the Mari Scenes, as nothing ever happened.... Same for final duet, which is the first song you'll hear in the main menu
This game made me reflect a lot on my past and helped me realise all I'd been through - my family wasn't the happiest either you see, and my childhood has remained a collection of bittersweet memories because of them and the problems I've had since. I guess, I'll tell my story, for anyone listening. It's a good way to cope and who knows? Maybe one of you is the same as me. Feel free to skip to the last four paragraphs if you're not interested. I'm 16, I'm an A-Levels student and, well, my family's a mess. My first mother left in 2011, leaving behind me, my dad and my sister with all of the household's money, forcing my dad to work his arse off to try and repay everything - he's currently doing 65+ hour weeks as an acute medicine consultant, someone who works in Accident and Emergency services. But of course, she didn't leave without all the trauma me and the rest of us had to deal with, as I became a lonely shut-in who just played games with no friends, my dad turned to alcohol and my sister to the internet. My first mum and my dad fought both physically and verbally, and our house never really was much of a home. Even afterward, she still guilt-tripped me and my sister for how we don't love her anymore, for how we don't care about her. At the time I was conflicted, but I do think that she is right; we do not love her anymore, not after all the misery she caused us. We moved on and for nine months, we were blissfully happy, more connected to one another than ever. I don't think there was a single day where we didn't all sit in the living room together laughing, chatting, watching films together. Then my dad got remarried, but... She was just a repeat of the past. He got remarried because he missed having that romantic love in his life, but sadly, I do not know if he would've been happy had he known the consequences as to what happened to me and my sister. My stepmother is manipulative, conniving and cruel, continually attempting to draw divides between my sister and my father. Worst part is? She completely succeeded. The two of them, despite their love for one another, have an unstable relationship and do not trust each other nearly as much. My dad probably knows that something's up, so what does he do? He goes for the fucking bottle. Every night he comes back from work, he drinks one and a half, sometimes two glasses of whisky, as him and his wife lay down side by side, not talking nor looking at one another, just staring at their screens in total silence. My stepmother loves me, but I'm so torn, not because of reason though. I think I lacked a lot of TLC growing up and because of that, I really longed for a mother figure, so I inevitably ended up instinctively loving her despite my... less than stellar experiences between her and my sister. Logically? I hate her. I despise her. She's torn our family apart. The worries, fears, loneliness, escapism, depression, suicidal thoughts - this game nails entirely. And it makes me all the happier to know that people can understand these feelings without the trauma. I've got friends who know the whole story, and I couldn't be happier with them by my side. To be understood, to be known and honest? No money, job, present or medium beats that shit. And in the end, Sunny got what he wanted too, didn't he? Life's strange; cruel, kind, wondrous and tragic - but as long as those you love are by your side, that's all that matters. Update: It took a couple of years, but I've improved a metric ton since I wrote this. For anyone who's in a bad place right now, please know that you're not the first person to go through that kinda crap, and that people have survived before. You have to find your own answer on how you want to live, and having the counsel of others can really help with that. Please don't be too hard on yourself. I know it's not easy, I won't pretend it is. It's just that when it comes to confronting what you want or who you are, you have to be the one to take care of yourself and figure things out - when the cards are down, you might be the only one who can.
I've been struggling a lot lately too with how my dad treated my sister in the past; he loves me very much, don't get me wrong, but years ago he beat her back when we lived elsewhere. She nearly committed suicide and told me she chose not to only because I existed - and now I'm left with these feelings that I understand, but can't control. She initially chose to live not out of hope, but out of guilt. To be honest, my dad's scarred me a lot too. He's yelled at me and caused a panic attack, and while I was having one, continued and worsened it. He's also told me he'd rather die than depend on me. Can I really love someone who did that? Even if it was a good few years ago? After all the pain he's caused both of us? Even after all the work he puts in to keep the household functional at all? I feel like I've spent so much of my life wanting the truth, ever since my first mother left, and now that I have it, I don't know what to do with it.

on "by your side" videos, most commentors say they cry or feel sad when they listen to this song, but i feel rather happy and comforted. mari was and still is my favorite character, and her memories will always be cherished. i can't help but think of mari, or honestly anyone i see as close to me, wrapping their arms around me and telling me that it's okay whenever i listen to this song. that always make me smile. the comfort, love, sadness, and pain this game brings is one of a kind. mari will always be smiling at her picnic, and always By Your Side. this will always be my favorite OST of OMORI. thank you for making this video ^_^
Spoilers!!!! I really like that soft ghost like humming in the background, since it almost signifies and serves as a reminder to players that Mari has passed, and that she is now only an imagination of her for Sunny/Omori to interact with. It's also very comforting and warm, reflecting what Mari tells Sunny during the last battle against Omori, "Promise me... that you'll forgive yourself". I also really like how the song name is "By Your Side" when it could've just been "Mari's Theme", and it shows how supportive Mari was the entire time for Sunny, despite what Sunny did. This really egged Sunny on to finally forgive himself and let go of his guilt, self hatred and pain, and I think this is such an amazing message from the game because it doesn't tell players to just forgive themselves (or Sunny to forgive himself) in a "just do it manner", the game acknowledges how difficult it is to stop hating yourself and feeling guilty about something you did a long time ago as the memory haunts you everyday. The game does it in a mature and gradual manner, which I think is more reflective of real life and how the process really works. It's a positive and good message.
Major spoilers lmao . . . You're totally right about the way it handles guilt. Every ending but one and an entire ROUTE is simply dedicated to avoiding acceptance or outright rejecting it and they make a really, really appealing case for it. The floaty nature of this song reminds me more of the start of the Bad End. Close your eyes.. You'll be there soon. . . With Mari~ It's miserable, heart wrenching and does little to actually give you a solid comfort, but I agree that's what makes it true to Sunny's struggle and people with depression in general. There's never a clear-cut happy moment with Omori ( as beautiful as all the moments can be ) but rather little strewn fragments of hope to hold on to and interpret yourself.
This song has probably the biggest tone change I have ever experienced from a game. When I first heard it, it didn't really hit all that hard, but once you understand the true nature of the game, it is now just a grim reminder of the happiness Sunny once had.
after beating it, its honestly so comforting knowing maris character, her kind, her compassion, and just general love, this song it comforts me because i can think of mari while listening to it even after knowing what happened to her i know she still deeply cares and loves sunny so the fact that shes gone doesn't make this song any less calming and enjoyable
this is an example of how simple music can be just as beautiful as any other complicated melody. it gives me an ache in my heart, almost like nostalgia or the feeling that everything was so much better back then, and i just love it so, so much. even when i’m sad, hearing this makes me smile immediately and sigh because it shows me there’s still reasons to live.
I remember the first time I booted up the game on my switch to get to the new content on it, and hearing this again for the first time in months was a swift punch to my gut with emotions.
I love this song so much, because it just feels so medicinal. It feels like someone’s close to you, only wanting to make you feel better, full of love. It truly sums up how Sunny felt for Mari deep down, remembering her for how kind and generous she was. It’s as heartbreaking as it is beautiful.
I watched a full playthrough of this game, (and intend to get it for myself because it honestly looks like a fun game to play,) and I couldn't help but notice this song has a sort of nostalgic quality to it, like long-past memories of better days, or dreams of happier moments- fitting for a game such as this. this game feels like the earthbound of the mid 2000s. it oozes all the visuals, sounds and emotions of growing up as a kid in the mid-to-late computer era. (i was born in 1999.) this song for some reason is my favorite of all the tracks- i find myself listening to it over and over for how much it just swells with euphoria, playfulness, nostalgia, and innocence. i am reminded of my own childhood and how it felt, how hot summer nights felt, how car rides home in the dark felt. how solitude felt as a child. i’m also someone who indulged in escapism my whole life, and this game also feeds that feeling for me with its surrealism.

There is a picture showing basil's hands on Omori trying to wake him up, it would be impossible for him to take a photo. so the preceding photos on the stairs never were really taken IMO.

After listening to this for a while I feel like this song perfectly fits Mari specifically the headspace version of Mari though. This song just kinda has this slight feeling of safety which shows like how Mari is always in a place of safety with the picnic blanket and how Sunny always wants her to be protected, but it also has a bit of perfect eerieness that just kinda reminds you that the headspace is just Sunny's imagination and that this interpretation of Mari isn't real and stuff. I dunno much on music but these are just kinda my thoughts while listening to the song

so, I just realized that Mari during the whole game does not go around with the rest of her friends because that is Sunny's dream, who knows he cannot bear the fact of seeing her die during one of the various battles. the fact that she stays on her picnic tablecloth, safe, waiting for others to join her to spend a moment of peace and harmony together reassures him more.
this theme plays in the moments when Omori and the others meet Mari. it gives me a feeling of reassurance, probably this is how Omori must have felt when in the game he found Mari waiting for him at the various checkpoints.

i love this song. it makes my eyes tear up and it makes my chest hurt and it makes me feel safe and happy. omori means so much to me. i have always had rocky mental health and could deeply relate with sunny and basil. i got the good ending and genuinely cried so much. it filled me with such... hope. even after everything that happened, even after the pain and the suffering that sunny had to go through, he found the courage to face the truth. even after everything the entire friend group went through, they persevered and they helped each other and they stayed together. i guess thats what really got me about the story. i dont think ive ever been so touched by any game or piece of media in the past. it just.. it hit somewhere really really close to home and opened up wounds i didnt even know i had. there are so many childhood memories that sunny has that i can understand and relate to. the days hanging out with friend, fun beach trips, riding home tired and happy with the sun shining on my back, standing in line for the first day of school... and the loss of those friends, the loneliness and the fear that began to pervade my life after. i love omori because there is something in it for everyone. the story seems really tragic and sad, and yet there is something basically everyone can relate to in it. omori will always be bittersweet for me, because i found it when i was in a bad place and it has become a comfort and escape for me, so much so that i feel that im losing myself and my real life to be with these fictional characters. i am quite literally becoming sunny and using a game about escapism to escape. but at the same time this game means so much to me and has really helped me. it gives me hope that no one is irreversibly broken. it gives me hope that there is someone that can understand me. it gives me hope that there are people who can persevere. and each of the characters brings me so much comfort. im ranting now, but i just... yeah. i wanted to say how much this game means to me. i havent been able to really cry for years and this game broke something in me. every time i listen to this song i can shed a few tears. i had never allowed myself to feel like that before. i had never been impacted so deeply by a game before. i had never loved a game so much before.
i'm sad that it isn't real, but happy that i got to get to know these characters, even if they are just fictional. and this song always makes me cry, and always will.
I had the same emotion with To The Moon.. that game broke me so much, even more than omori. Maybe omori didn't made me too sad because i was already prepared after playing To the moon? Probably

But now I just cry if I hear it... If I think about the fact, that this ist meant to be Maris own theme... How they remixed it multiple times in the story progression and how it plays and plays at the Mari Scenes, as nothing ever happened.... Same for final duet, which is the first song you'll hear in the main menu

This game made me reflect a lot on my past and helped me realise all I'd been through - my family wasn't the happiest either you see, and my childhood has remained a collection of bittersweet memories because of them and the problems I've had since.
I guess, I'll tell my story, for anyone listening. It's a good way to cope and who knows? Maybe one of you is the same as me. Feel free to skip to the last four paragraphs if you're not interested.
I'm 16, I'm an A-Levels student and, well, my family's a mess. My first mother left in 2011, leaving behind me, my dad and my sister with all of the household's money, forcing my dad to work his arse off to try and repay everything - he's currently doing 65+ hour weeks as an acute medicine consultant, someone who works in Accident and Emergency services. But of course, she didn't leave without all the trauma me and the rest of us had to deal with, as I became a lonely shut-in who just played games with no friends, my dad turned to alcohol and my sister to the internet. My first mum and my dad fought both physically and verbally, and our house never really was much of a home.
Even afterward, she still guilt-tripped me and my sister for how we don't love her anymore, for how we don't care about her. At the time I was conflicted, but I do think that she is right; we do not love her anymore, not after all the misery she caused us. We moved on and for nine months, we were blissfully happy, more connected to one another than ever. I don't think there was a single day where we didn't all sit in the living room together laughing, chatting, watching films together.
Then my dad got remarried, but... She was just a repeat of the past. He got remarried because he missed having that romantic love in his life, but sadly, I do not know if he would've been happy had he known the consequences as to what happened to me and my sister. My stepmother is manipulative, conniving and cruel, continually attempting to draw divides between my sister and my father. Worst part is? She completely succeeded. The two of them, despite their love for one another, have an unstable relationship and do not trust each other nearly as much. My dad probably knows that something's up, so what does he do? He goes for the fucking bottle.
Every night he comes back from work, he drinks one and a half, sometimes two glasses of whisky, as him and his wife lay down side by side, not talking nor looking at one another, just staring at their screens in total silence. My stepmother loves me, but I'm so torn, not because of reason though. I think I lacked a lot of TLC growing up and because of that, I really longed for a mother figure, so I inevitably ended up instinctively loving her despite my... less than stellar experiences between her and my sister. Logically? I hate her. I despise her. She's torn our family apart.
The worries, fears, loneliness, escapism, depression, suicidal thoughts - this game nails entirely. And it makes me all the happier to know that people can understand these feelings without the trauma.
I've got friends who know the whole story, and I couldn't be happier with them by my side. To be understood, to be known and honest? No money, job, present or medium beats that shit.
And in the end, Sunny got what he wanted too, didn't he?
Life's strange; cruel, kind, wondrous and tragic - but as long as those you love are by your side, that's all that matters.
Update:
It took a couple of years, but I've improved a metric ton since I wrote this. For anyone who's in a bad place right now, please know that you're not the first person to go through that kinda crap, and that people have survived before. You have to find your own answer on how you want to live, and having the counsel of others can really help with that. Please don't be too hard on yourself. I know it's not easy, I won't pretend it is. It's just that when it comes to confronting what you want or who you are, you have to be the one to take care of yourself and figure things out - when the cards are down, you might be the only one who can.
I wish nothing but the best for you and your family. You deserve a happy ending just the same as Sunny and his friends.
I've been struggling a lot lately too with how my dad treated my sister in the past; he loves me very much, don't get me wrong, but years ago he beat her back when we lived elsewhere. She nearly committed suicide and told me she chose not to only because I existed - and now I'm left with these feelings that I understand, but can't control. She initially chose to live not out of hope, but out of guilt.
To be honest, my dad's scarred me a lot too. He's yelled at me and caused a panic attack, and while I was having one, continued and worsened it. He's also told me he'd rather die than depend on me.
Can I really love someone who did that? Even if it was a good few years ago? After all the pain he's caused both of us?
Even after all the work he puts in to keep the household functional at all?
I feel like I've spent so much of my life wanting the truth, ever since my first mother left, and now that I have it, I don't know what to do with it.

on "by your side" videos, most commentors say they cry or feel sad when they listen to this song, but i feel rather happy and comforted. mari was and still is my favorite character, and her memories will always be cherished. i can't help but think of mari, or honestly anyone i see as close to me, wrapping their arms around me and telling me that it's okay whenever i listen to this song. that always make me smile. the comfort, love, sadness, and pain this game brings is one of a kind. mari will always be smiling at her picnic, and always By Your Side.

I really like that soft ghost like humming in the background, since it almost signifies and serves as a reminder to players that Mari has passed, and that she is now only an imagination of her for Sunny/Omori to interact with. It's also very comforting and warm, reflecting what Mari tells Sunny during the last battle against Omori, "Promise me... that you'll forgive yourself". I also really like how the song name is "By Your Side" when it could've just been "Mari's Theme", and it shows how supportive Mari was the entire time for Sunny, despite what Sunny did. This really egged Sunny on to finally forgive himself and let go of his guilt, self hatred and pain, and I think this is such an amazing message from the game because it doesn't tell players to just forgive themselves (or Sunny to forgive himself) in a "just do it manner", the game acknowledges how difficult it is to stop hating yourself and feeling guilty about something you did a long time ago as the memory haunts you everyday. The game does it in a mature and gradual manner, which I think is more reflective of real life and how the process really works. It's a positive and good message.

Every ending but one and an entire ROUTE is simply dedicated to avoiding acceptance or outright rejecting it and they make a really, really appealing case for it. It's miserable, heart wrenching and does little to actually give you a solid comfort, but I agree that's what makes it true to Sunny's struggle and people with depression in general. There's never a clear-cut happy moment with Omori ( as beautiful as all the moments can be ) but rather little strewn fragments of hope to hold on to and interpret yourself.
This song has probably the biggest tone change I have ever experienced from a game. When I first heard it, it didn't really hit all that hard, but once you understand the true nature of the game, it is now just a grim reminder of the happiness Sunny once had.

this is an example of how simple music can be just as beautiful as any other complicated melody. it gives me an ache in my heart, almost like nostalgia or the feeling that everything was so much better back then, and i just love it so, so much. even when i’m sad, hearing this makes me smile immediately and sigh because it shows me there’s still reasons to live.

Never had a game absolutely body me emotionally as much as this game did. I haven't been the same since. Such a gem and the music is done so well
Reminds me of the Faron woods from twilight princess. Soft, magical, with a touch of sadness you can't pinpoint.
This theme is what gets me. You let your guard down but then you remember its a Pshycological Horror Game

this game feels like the earthbound of the mid 2000s. it oozes all the visuals, sounds and emotions of growing up as a kid in the mid-to-late computer era. (i was born in 1999.)
this song for some reason is my favorite of all the tracks- i find myself listening to it over and over for how much it just swells with euphoria, playfulness, nostalgia, and innocence. i am reminded of my own childhood and how it felt, how hot summer nights felt, how car rides home in the dark felt. how solitude felt as a child. i’m also someone who indulged in escapism my whole life, and this game also feeds that feeling for me with its surrealism.
Still wondering how Mari didnt hear Basil take those pictures.

@@macncard.9673 Those weren't actual pictures basil took, I think they are just basil's memories that you are seeing in picture form. There is a picture showing basil's hands on Omori trying to wake him up, it would be impossible for him to take a photo. so the preceding photos on the stairs never were really taken IMO.
