      I look forward to an editing together of trained geologists’ cameo commentaries from various films - with amended subtitling because the cc here produce gobbledegook - they do not recognise technical terms nor do they adjust to an Icelandic speaker’s speech habits affecting their otherwise excellent English🤩😍💐 Thank you for all your effort. Also what roll the cooled lava plays to form a more or less insulating layer over the hot rocks and lava within the lava field after it has flowed across the landscape. Totally fascinating talk from Dad the geologist. Moar, moar.

    As a Geologist the presentation is beautifully presented by both Father and Son. The technical explanation is smoothly delivered by the Professor Ingolfsson and these have been extremely well integrated with the visual by Jon. The eruption is a relatively unique opportunity to see a lava eruption in a natural amphitheater where every seat is the best in the house. Very well done and the records of this eruption will be studied for many years

    Finally! Information from an expert! Most of the videos, while visually great, have no info except obvious observation. Anyone else on site who talks about the geology & the actual mechanics of the lava progression? Is the “wall” being built expected to actually divert the lava? To where?
    Thanks.

    • @olafuringolfsson9151
      @olafuringolfsson9151 3 года назад +1

      Thanks for your positive feedback. The wall is constructed to keep the lava confined within the valleys surrounding the volcano, instead of having it taking the path of least resistance down towards the coast where it threatens infrastructure (roads, cables). Hopefully this can be done. In case the eruption lasts for months or the lava production increases this might turn out to be futile. Lava flows cannot be stopped, only diverted, and there are limits to what we can do. But, it is worth the try.

    Support sentiments below. As a retired science teacher, I found explanation by Geologist Ólafur Íngólfsson of how earth plates are moving and how it is so evident in the geology of Iceland; with maps and explanations illuminating and easy to imagine, visualize and explain to others. I will be visiting Iceland with an earth science leader in July and this explanation provides a background on which to build a better understanding not only of geology of Iceland, but how it relates to the geology where I live in the Connecticut Valley, MA. Fingers crossed that Geldingadalur is still going strong when I arrive. I have little faith that the human constructed Lava Wall is going to have much impact on the lava movement.

      Thank you! People really love these Volcano Geology videos and so I hope to make a new channel with my Dad some day in the near future. I'll make sure you hear about it!

    Some interesting background information explaining the general formation of the landscape, with glacial maxima raising hills, and interglacials filling in the valleys. This would be the opposite of other landscapes where mountains are ground down by glaciers making landscapes flatter in an erosive regime. We hear about different kinds of vulcanism in Iceland as well such as the towering atmospheric ash columns (strato volcano?) I associated with colliding plates and compression rather than the steady predictable flow due to plate dispersal, mantle convection, and crust fracturing.

    I wish the smell of that area could fit into a fibre glass cable and posted as a message... real curious. Thanx for this wonderful video. Always wanted to see shifting plates @ work.

    this video shows how small it really was back. Today the path they took is 200 meters under lava.

      Thank you Rebecca! This video was so popular that we did a follow up Q&A video I think you will find informative. I use a ton of clips I captured on March 21st, the first day after the volcano was born (just a baby)

    Thanks to you and your Dad for giving us a great look at the eruption. I'm a geologist as well in Western Australia - we don't get to see eruptions down here! Great to see the glassy tephra falling - was any of it hot? Cheers!

      Thanks for your positive feedback. Mostly, the shards cooled and solidified in the air, but the most violent explosions caused still molten lava to the be thrown our way. This ignited the mosses (and we decided to retreat to a safer location)...
