Next year Jacob will have 4340 vocals playing all at once.
"so here is the logic session, it stands at 15,000 tracks tall, which is a pretty healthy number of tracks"
@@PierreRegensburger "and it has a file size of roughly 8GB, which is a pretty healthy file size"
@@thmsrttg Actually, that's not that much considering 2 of my songs are 12 mins long in total and contain around 50 tracks each and they take up around 4-5gb at 48khz 24 bit.
Edit: grammar
Jacob collier seems to have almost single handedly made the number of tracks in a song, relevant.
There is a sad truth about music... Our Lord and creator Jesus Christ, created us human beings in a way that we dont really like music nor we need it, on the contrary music is actually a torture instrument for the human soul.. Its demons that through our passions like the ambition, tempt us to deal with music. In life you dont have to prove anything to anyone and your talent is not coming with you in the grave. So repent of your sins and turn to the Lord.
Jacob: "It's just *delicious* to be nominated for a grammy this year."
(Jacob's 5 Grammys in the background sit in silence.)
1:35:54 "i often transpose when i film. i transpose the recording to different microtonal pitches so i don't get bored of the original key."
yeah ok this guy is absolutely insane
Doesn't he just do that with a press of a button on the already recorded song though? Because that way it is understandable
thats where you read him as insane? not "The THX theme is a banger"?
not even just the universal pitches, but key words "microtonal pitches"
no but i do that lmao
I think that's pretty normal. Both to get bored of hearing something in a certain key after a while and then just hitting a transpose button.
This was unbelievable. I watched it live. And - after all this - listen to the song gave me an so much deeper view than I already had. This was my Christmas present. Thank you so much Jacob. All the best for you!!! Adam
Almost as unbelievable as quoting this song in the middle of a jazz VGM cover @6:00 ruclips.net/video/uGn-r_ofoko/видео.html ;)
I love Jacob's delivery - the calm English demeanour and understatement is so soothing to my ears. (I've just been listening to Jack Conte and Charles Cornell screaming excitedly for 20mins 😉)
Congratulations on the 'lovely' Grammy nomination Jacob! 👏
10:55 "Minor chord iv does it for me every time". Oh boy do I agree. It's the best triad in a major key hands down, it's just so emotional. You can not pay attention to the harmony at all but you will instantly recognize this chord - something that happens with no other chord to me.
iidim iv and III. Really any chord with that #5/b6 of the scale has a similar type of emotional quality.
I want a show like mr rogers where Jacob talks about music. His voice is so soothing and the way he talks about music is so interesting
sat with a horse playing a kids keyboard
This is a great idea!!!!
it's always amazing to see the little artistic details that we don't usually catch upon first listening, it just makes the experience of listening to it even more magical
I often wonder how much Jacob I am missing out on with my normal human ears.
@@howtofinishasong9949 since I don’t have perfect pitch I feel like I don’t experience the microtonal key changes as impactfully as people with perfect pitch would, some people w perfect pitch say it’s comparable to seeing color for the first time 😂
2:09 "North Korea, wow, ok" 💀😭 had me rolling idek
"When you get it right, it makes you feel stuff."
- Jacob Collier, 2021
Oh Jacob, you got it SO RIGHT!!
Jacob: Explains difference tones.
Jacob: "So there's 10 minutes of your life that you will never get back"
Me, being a senior high-school music teacher: "True, but it's also 10 minutes that my students will now have to endure as I teach them something just to blow their minds"
For those asking, his microphones are the Neumann U87AI (the silver overhead mic) and the AEA KU5A (the ribbon mic).
While others are secretive about their process in the fear of being copied, Jacob is trying to do the opposite but most people are just too beneath him to understand everything he is saying.
It's like copying the homework of the smartest kid in the class - you might be able to write it down but you'll never be able to understand it or do it all by yourself!
*side eye*
The Half-Sharp Prince bringing Christmas early this year ✨
Holy shit 26:18
That's literally how I described Jacob to my dad for the first time lol. I just said, "he's basically the THX theme created human"
Absolutely brilliant. Watching these logic session breakdowns feels like watching a little kid getting excited about showing you his/her toys. Thank you for your child-like awe and excitement, Jacob! It is a joy for us to experience it with you. :) Merry Christmas, brothers and sisters! Blessings from Wheaton College here in the United States.
What he talks about at around 39:40 is something I have been doing for quite a while now but couldn't explain on the guitar. Sometimes I tried to play songs that are on 7 string guitars and since I don't have one, I realized that if I play the upper two notes of a power chord it almost sounds the same as the full power chord. Finally some validation from a pro! :D
Jacob: *Sighs a Gb*
Grammys: We would like to nominate Jacob collier fro his song "Subtle Breaths"
I thought I knew the track pretty well after listening to it 5000 times while making my own cover but this was super illuminating! Always appreciate the work you do.
58:01 «Ah lovely» 😂
This was absolutely fascinating and so inspiring.Thank you for these breakdowns, it's so nice to hear all the little details of each arrangement!
Finally! It feels like forever since last logic session breakdown. Thanks, Jacob!
1 in every 2 million might be genius... not all share like this. Thanks Jacob
Even Jacob was stalling for about 4 mins like "where do I begin (to explain my mastery)..."
There is so much to discover in your breakdown sessions and arrangements and man, all of what you're doing is like an ongoing spiritual epiphany that answers everything I had been looking to explore with music myself (on a FAAAR more modest scale and level, though). I can't thank you enough for... living in our time and so generously sharing your wealth of talents with us, amazing! 🧡🎹🎧
It's fantastic that someone of your talent has also been afforded the tools to help with your creations. Great command of technologies combined with well honed skills.
You are such a gift, Jacob. Thanks for being you ♥️
it’s incredible how much i learned just by watching this. what a session! will definitely catch the next one
this was so inspirational!! 💘💘 love you Jacob
Wow what a wealth of knowledge and to pass it on to everyone else. Thank you Jacob you are a treasure.
You’re the man. As a hobby musician, I find this quite inspiring. It’s about the ideas and not some fancy equipment. Imagine a 250 person ”choir orchestra” singing this arrangement live :)
We are so grateful to have you in this world Jacob ❤️
This video should have 10 billion views. I just watched the Moon River video today for the first time, too. Mind blown.
39:02 Berklee kids screaming LIL lol
Jacob - I love your logic breakdowns! Thank you so much - happy New Year x
15:39 Imagine Shaquille O Neal standing in front of a choir as the solo singer in santa costume with his eyes closed
You are so incredible Jacob and your generosity in sharing your process is remarkable. Thank you so much. I am learning so much from you and your process and reasoning. :-) 🙏🏼❤️
Imagine having a computer that can process that many tracks in one session
I love his energy, so awesome
Got the notification 7.02 pm. What an utter surprise. So happy to have caught it live.
Last year this arrangement was my principal Christmas present. This year it’s the Logic Session. 🤗
Absolut Christmas magic, thank yo again Jacob for this amazing journey!
Also Christmas magic was The Consouls Christmas stream last year when this tune was quoted in the middle of a VGM jazz cover, namely Dearly Beloved from Kingdom Hearts (@6:00) ruclips.net/video/uGn-r_ofoko/видео.html
1:00:29 literally screamed when i saw this how did i not know logic could do that...
This is gonna get me through writer’s block this week, thank you so much. Been thinking about how you do this stuff lately!!
45:08 “so these notes do not exist basically”
Thank you Jacob. The world needs more microtonal sounds why do we limit ourselves?
to keep a keyboard easy to use and not 5 meters long but yes I agree why do we limit ourselves
This is beyond godlike, i feel like a complete noob, only been practicing music for as long as Jacob has been alive 😂
You are an incredible human being J.! I love your harmonies!
The long awaited session breakdown!
I just watched you and Chris Martin, with We are King, on the radio 2 concert. It was absolutely beautiful, so lovely to hear such heavenly music ❤️
A modern day Mozart, what a genius, the most beautiful arrangement I've ever heard!
I never watched one of these logic sessions and it’s just amazing how creative and knowledgeable you are and How great of a person you are
Dear Jacob...It was SO awesome that you made this video to show your process & chord progressions....WOW!..is all i canI say when I hear your music. I'm currently working on vocals on a Christmas song...which is challenging me to do something different than how I've been hearing the background vocals. I'm inspired! Thank you Jacob🤗for sharing your gift & your creative process with us🤗👍👏🎶♥️and your expert logic hacks... awesome!!!
This reminds me Tatsuro Yamashita’s great a cappella album “On The Street Corner” released in 1980. Jacob’s music is huge advancement of it!
I’m your fan from Japan and I often use your videos for listening practice. Now I have taken your accent, and I believe that any note goes with a complex harmony
I really like your ‘um’ by the way
Fascinating! Thank you Jacob.
ahhhh lovely session, thank you jacob! ;)
Thanks Jacob. Love your work, you truely are a “musicians” musician. Please come tour Australia again soon, I’ll invite all my mates! 😃
And I'll bring the whole family (we couldn't go in 2019)! Fingers crossed for latter half of 2022 🤞
You're my inspiration
All those instruments in his room and he makes a 200+ track song with just his voice?! I ❤️ him.
this man blows my brain in the most wonderful way .... every time
49:17 *Casually beatboxes like a BOSS* 😮👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
2:09 "north korea... well okay"
1:25:48 into the livestream, Jacob: “forget I said anything “
I hope to one day hear a Jacob Collier arrangement of any song from the Scrooge musical from 1970 starring Albert Finney. Jacob's music takes on this vibe every now and again that reminds me of it. These live streams are so enlightening. A million thanks and much love.
Wow, what a treasure! Thank you Jacob!
I was at work on the asu campus when you went live. Happy Christmas and happy holidays guys.
I watch this and keep finding myself with my jawdropping or saying "holy cow." He is a genius at so many levels.
Harmony texture is Beautiful!
a masterclass in creativity!
The Melodica solo is exquisite. ☺️
01:29:18 re: your comment about your perfect pitch going flat - FINALLY someone is talking about this! For me it’s now routinely off by a 1/2 step but until now I’d only heard of it affecting mainly people starting in their 50’s (as I am). I would be VERY CURIOUS if you or anyone else can hypothesize as to what causes this as it’s extremely disorienting! Love this video.
Mindblown always by how you think, Jacob!! Thanks for sharing your process
Now all we need is one of “In the bleak midwinter” for the Jacob collier a cappella trifecta
Fascinating. This is genius at work.
This was very educative.
😮 Thanks!
16:57 that “uh-oh” is iconic at this point.
The difference tone stuff is REALLY cool, and it doesn't even look that hard to use! Seems like a good way to make some voice leadings much cooler.
Father Jacob blessing us again!
22:32 - I used to sing bass in an a cappella group which mainly did vocal jazz, and "dmm" was my bread and butter. 😁
But, yes, "dmm" is a very useful syllable in any vocal context.
Best Xmas present ever!
so glad you talked about difference tone because it happened to me on my CD with my acoustic bassguitar. There was suddenly a note I surely did not play and I was hearing this note, but the engineer did not. Now I know what it is.
Ahhhh how did I miss this!!! Nooo
Oy, oy, oy! As always, thank you!! Also as always, more please!!!
this is so nice and peaceful.
As is The Consouls jazz cover of Dearly Beloved from Kingdom Hearts during which the sax player quoted The Christmas Song @6:00 ruclips.net/video/uGn-r_ofoko/видео.html
19:15 - Indian Raga Charukeshi arrives. Jacob is a genius.
Great insights into your working processes and ways of conceiving music. The snowdrift key morph thing reminds me of Tahitian Himene Tarava style, which emulates the movement of waves in a similar fashion.
23:52 is where this should have been a GRAMMY WIN versus a nomination... lol
I was expecting the ted greene reference! One of my favorite players of all time!
Beautiful
That was... fabulously delightful. Sharply intelligent and fluffily charming, both in the same package. Thank you for sharing your time, your passion, and your insight. Bravo.
You are amazing. Hi from Buenos Aires 🙋♀️
I think I speak for us all when I say... Wowzers trousers. Nice one Jacob!
It isn't only the quality in the chords. Vocal harmony, in my view, is as much about crossing over harmonics as anything else. There are so many fine illustrations of it here!
How I learned the difference tone was the frequencies subtracted. Like hertz minus hertz. But I think your description still works as your overtone numbers are just multiples of the fundamental frequencies. Thanks 😁
You make music a completely different experience. It’s insane.
i can't believe i missed this live!
As a musician who developed perfect pitch in childhood, I began hearing A440 a bit higher in the past few days now. I’m thirty now, and like you said about your perfect pitch going flat, mine is very similar. Very bizarre indeed! Thanks for addressing this issue, along with Rick Beato and Adam Neely. Also, thanks for the break downs. (Smile)
This was great from south africa 🇿🇦👏
u sir just put my next paycheck towards logic. serious Brian Wilson vibes in your arrangements. Much love from PGH d00d!
This is fascinating, thanks for sharing your insights on this, I knew we’d get to Shepard Tones eventually 🤣
1:10:59 "all the stops out" I recently went to an organ concert and it was phenomenal to hear such an impressive instrument played well. Those pipes can really sing! I hope someone will arrange this for an organ because-- w o w-- I can only imagine what that might feel like to be in the room where that happens. 🎄
an organ duet
1:19:47 "ts" tsim - ple *light* like a dollop of daisies... This makes me (however momentarily) want to study orchestration--so lovely... PS on that Shepard tone--I've wondered how it felt like it was always expanding/ feeling like it was opening up. bbbeeeaaauuutttiiifffuuullluhf it
