I love this song so much. We played this as the recessional sing for my son's funeral back in October 2014. It was and still is the hardest thing I've ever and could ever imagine going through!!! I prayed day and night for my little boy from the last 3 months of my pregnancy until he passed away at 15 days. I have to remind myself that God gave me my son and God took him to a higher place and that when I find out I was pregnant I made a promise to God that whatever it takes, whatever his will in my life and the life of my son, I would not fight him over and I would not stray from him over it. Hymns like this helped me through a lot as a child. I was abused at a young age so growing up I had a lot of pain and anger to deal with. If I had not decided to start going to church at a young age my life would be very different and far worse now. Gods grace is great and more than enough if you look for it. Love this and not trying to ruin the moment, but upon doing research to perform this with the story at my church, his son was born AFTER the shipwreck in 1873 and died at age 4 of scarlet fever on February 11, 1880.
Don't know how that comment of mine below, made it on this page. I love reading the story to what happened to this family, tho heartbreaking it is. However, how many hearts over the years have been uplifted due to his tragic life but his strong faith in our Lord. Don't know if I could have gone thru what he did with such faith. Would like to think so but I thank God for keeping my kids safe as they grew up.
Hi Deborah, it is hard to imagine, out of great suffering and loss can come a song like this, I was walking and talking with the lord tonight imagining this very thing, as I thought about the story I was reminded of the early believers, who, when they were to be stoned or eaten by lions, or horribly crucified how did they go through it,and I realized that it is and would only be by the supernatural power of His glorious grace. I know that at times like these the Lord's grace abounds, and in the moment of great loss God is most glorified and magnified in us, when we are most satisfied in Him and His grace alone. I could go on and on about this. It is one of the wonderful truths about our relationship with Him. Oh glorious God we give you thanks that you have blessed us with this amazing grace and I pray that you might come back to this page and be blessed.
When ones life is free from turmoil and heartache it's hard to relate to those whom are in suffering. I now hurt and feel other's pain of this world. Don't give up, we have a promise, it shall all come to pass.
In dark times, I wonder if this is how God treats his 'children' then who in their right minds can proclaim that other hymn 'What a friend we have in Jesus'. But........if Horatio wasn't a Christian then it would be yet another tragedy with circumstance, human error or chance to blame. Or a mixture of all three. Then I realise that He has promised to be with us through all our trials and tribulations. And that eternity has more importance then the temporal nature of life.
