Why YODA was Wrong and LUKE is Making the Same Mistakes | Star Wars Breakdown

  • The Star Wars Saga has spanned 12 films, countless TV episodes, books, and comics--and all that media has revealed one undeniable truth. Yoda messed up. He messed up real bad. The Clone wars are marred with the failures of Yoda, Mace Windu, and the rest of the Jedi Council. Their actions directly led to the rise of Palpatine, the Empire, and the destruction of the Jedi Order.
In this video we break own exactly where Yoda failed, and why the dogmatic beliefs of the Jedi were flawed from the start. The Council became too intertwined with the politics of the Republic Senate, and committed too hard to winning the war against the Separatists. In doing so, they sacrificed their beliefs, and their connection with the Force.
But, Yoda chose exile and found a new path forward. Through the failures of Luke, maybe now Rey's new new Jedi Order will embrace empathy and emotions, and rebuild stronger and better than before. Maybe, under a mandalorian Jedi King named Grogu.

This is the moment where Yoda realized that he failed. It wasn’t that he failed to defeat Darth Sidious, because their duel was fairly even. No, in this moment Yoda realized how wrong he was: about the Jedi’s way, about the clone wars, about his arrogance and blindness. This moment of failure is a culmination of decades of terrible mistakes that led the Jedi to ruin.
Yoda was the de facto leader of the Jedi all through the disastrous events of the clone wars and order 66. This is why we can’t talk about Yoda being wrong, without talking about the Jedi’s failures, because they are one and the same.
Let’s begin by examining one of the most crucial scenes in the prequels, the moments that define Yoda’s many failures, and his terrible mistakes that eventually led to Anakin becoming Darth Vader.
Anakin suffered from Pamda’s death visions. He tried to confine in Yoda, searching for guidance and reassurance. But Yoda gave Anakin all the wrong answers, telling him to accept the death of his loved one.
Yoda lived for more than 900 years, it was easier for him to accept death, both because of his age, but also because of the Jedi code, which forbade personal attachment. It became his absolute truth, there was no alternative or flexibility, not for him and not for any other Jedi. Because he was so certain of the Jedi code, Yoda could never truly understand the love Anakin felt for Padme, and the great lengths he would go to save her. Yoda gave Anakin the apathetic answer, at a time when Anakin was seeking empathy, something he later got from Palpatine.
Of course, there were so many things that led to Anakin’s turn, but This was The moment where Yoda drove Anakin directly to the dark side, and began the chain of events that left the Jedi in ruin. And he was too blind and arrogant to see it.
There is nothing wrong with failure. But what is essential about failure is to learn from it, and do better. Unfortunately, Yoda didn’t learn from his many failures, not until it was too late.
Yoda grew too dogmatic and comfortable in his old age, he lost perspective, believing that the peace he has known all of his life will be everlasting and that the Jedi will prevail like they always did. This directly led to the final days of the Jedi and the republic, as the clone war was upon the galaxy. Yoda and the other Jedi chose to completely ignore how suspiciously and conveniently a clone army just landed in the republic’s lap. From the very start, it was clear that there was something off about the whole thing.
Obi-Wan was told that the clones were ordered by Sifo-Dyas, a Jedi master who foresaw the galactic conflict. Ironically, the Jedi council rejected Sifo-Dyas’ logic in creating an army for the republic, even casting out of the council. And yet, once the war had begun, the Jedi just accepted this army, because it was convenient.
Yoda never questions the dubious timing of the clone wars nor the timing of the army’s creation. Completely ignoring the fact that this army was cloned from Jango Fett, the same bounty hunter who was working for Dooku.

Qui Gon wasn't perfect, either. He saw some flaws, but he makes a critical mistake in the first five minutes of episode I. Kenobi vaguely senses Sidious's plot, and Jinn dismisses it as a distraction from the present. This ultimately leads to Qui-Gon's undoing.

The psychologist Carl Jung said that people have a "persona" - the part of themselves they are proud of and like that they show to the world, all the "good parts" of themselves, and that people also have a "shadow" - the part of themselves they are ashamed of and hate and that they hide from the world, all the "bad parts" of themselves. He said that "avoiding or repressing your shadow" would just lead to problems, and that the "right solution" was that you need to "integrate your shadow" - stop being ashamed of those bad parts of yourself, learn to control them, and learn when and how to use them when you need them.
Carl Jung would have been a great Jedi Master.

I have been complaining to friends that Luke’s allegiance to the Jedi code of forbidding attachments makes no sense. It was clearly his love for his father that redeemed Anakin in the end, and Luke’s strong bonds with Han, Leia and the others ultimately helped him defeat the Empire. I mean, he even risked all of their lives to rescue Han from a Hutt! And the master/padawan relationships seems to violate the forbidden development of attachments in the first place. The Jedi’s forbidding of attachment/relationships makes no sense to me at all.

The irony of the Jedi Code is that it's actually not so much the will of the Force, as it is the subjective views of the Jedi masters who wrote the Jedi Path, which were insightful, yes, but not infallible. So Yoda being so dogmatic with the Jedi Code was in and of itself misguided.
And Yoda dealing in absolutes reminds me of that one time when Obi Wan himself said, "Only a Sith deals in absolutes." (Which, ironically enough, is a pretty absolutist thing to say on Obi Wan's part. Looks like plenty of Jedi deal in absolutes too.)

"Ezra Bridger is one of the force weilders who will learn to "bridge" the gap between light and dark and find that balance"
That's not how the force works. Balance is to be found in the light side, but it's hard, because it's not supposed to be easy to find balance in life. The dark side only offer an illusion, to lure you and feast from your flaws.
Dark side offer raw power. You'll be the strongest man in the galaxy in no time, but it will destroy you.
Light side offer balance, but you'll have to be worthy. You'll cultivate your strenght to reach that balance. It will be hard, failure will be met, but perseverance will be rewarded.
Maul tale is one of tragedy. He never accomplished anything. He was taken from his loved one and manipulated by Palpatine, to bring death and pain upon the galaxy. Left on his own, he only seek revenge. From Kenobi, from Palpatine. In his path, only destruction can be found. He killed countless innocent to hurt other, destroyed civilisation, then ran one of the biggest criminal syndicate in the galaxy. In his quest, he only managed to loose his only friend, and in the end, he died, alone, no accomplishement under his belt beside the death and destruction he caused.
Kanann Jarrus tale was also a tragedy. But his actions made a difference. He built something. He had a familly, with the Ghost crew and even more with her captain. He passed the torch of the Jedi order to Ezra. He saved countless live, even in his last moment. His action inspired other, to rebel against a brutal and tyranical governement. He wasn't the most important Jedi in the galaxy, he didn't get that much says in the event of the star wars galaxy, but he did his part, and it had a positive impact.

Jedi were taught that fear was a path to the Dark side, yet that was still teaching the Jedi to fear. Fear, anger, Jealousy, attachment were all taught in this manner with a fear of being corrupted by the Dark side.
Anger Management classes taught me one thing important: You will always get angry and anger is a normal emotion (although it is generally a secondary emotion provoked by a fear of some type). It is what you do with your anger that matters and that is where the Jedi truly failed. Jedi should have been taught how to cope with their emotions instead of repressing them as a sin.
A true Jedi that could cope with their own emotions would never fall to the dark side. No matter how much their enemies tried to make them afraid, or angry, a master of their emotions would always be able to overcome them by not giving into those emotions.

While Obi wan and Yoda told Luke what attachment could lead to, they let him risk his life for his friends. In cloud city, and then jabba's palace.

I think Luke's ultimatum to Grogu is Luke's naivete in doing what he's likely reading the the ancient Jedi texts he's recovered (so far). In other words, Luke isn't a wise Jedi master yet. His training was very ad hoc. He isn't like Yoda or Obi-wan, knowing all the Jedi customs and failures they can produce.
(Does the New Canon tell us what Luke knows or doesn't know about the Jedi prior to the Empire? I presume Luke knows little.)

In the book for revenge of the sith Yoda says he made the mistake of training everyone the way he was trained 900 years ago, instead of progressing like the sith. Yoda and the councils absolutes were the biggest push for dooku to leave the order, and a main reason qui Gon wouldn't sit on the council. The order preached the lightside and talked about balance in the force, but they were sent in to negotiate like a peaceful scare tactic, and often used as overpowered bodyguards

The problem is that while the sith were in hiding they were getting stronger with the rule of 2, once the student was strong enough they killed their mater, and keeping their numbers down so they wouldn't be detected. The Jedi orders arrogance and being stuck in their ways led to their downfall, and Yoda being in charge for as long as he was is the main reason it happened

The more back and forth these two forces go the more extreme things will get. I think the most interesting concept will form not into light vs dark, but enlightened vs grounded. There will be the force users that want to follow what the force decrees no matter what, light or dark. But there will still be the ones who aren’t as force sensitive who will see people suffer and question why the force users follow this mystical magical way if it hurts people.

He still cares about the Jedi like in his visions during the last few episodes of season 6
Yoda doesn’t try to reason with them because he probably tried it before and never got it to work
It’s also because the dark side is very addictive and he doesn’t want to risk the galaxy just for them
That is one of his flaws but it helped him keep the galaxy safe for almost 900 years

This fault is why i’m glad Ahsoka is a grey, it just feels more like we need to learn more about how Luke’s jedi order functioned/ why decided that you can’t be both a Mando and Jedi

      She's not grey. She's 100% a light sides, she's just not a Jedi.
The only "grey" being in the canon lore is the Bendu.

I don't think Anakin turned because of his attachment to Padme, it was the Jedi lack of empathy and compassion. If they had helped him then Vader would have never emerged

The Clone Wars make Anakin's reasons for turning to the dark side more complex and reasonable than just merely being hot for Natalie.

It was a lot of things, but his possesivness of Padme and inability to deal with loss was a big part of it.
He was also attached to the Jedi order. He could've left like Ahsoka did, but was too afraid. Anakin was an adult who made his own bad choices.

I think you have a great point...this problem with balance (good being blinded by their strictness) is why Grogu will have to choose both the Mandalorian Way and the Jedi/force path. He will also be able to train the Mandalorian to balance his emotions in order to wild the Dark saber.

great content...i also found ahsoka's words to Mando about grogu very hypocritical of her considering her own misfortunes with the jedi order and why she was motivated to leave the order...Maybe you could do a similar content explaination for darth Maul during the insergency of mandalore when he met ahsoka tano
