I don't know about this flashlight! I was surprised to see that the PD40R 2.0 only can do 3000 lumens for 2-3 minutes, and then it steps down to 1000 lumens and cannot do 3000 lumens again even if the battery is at 95%.
So I recharged the battery, and tried 30 lumens, 350 lumens, 1000 lumens for maybe 2 minutes, and then when I tried 3000 lumens I was shocked to see that it was only 1000 lumens. What the hell...

@@golforfishing you should invest in the Fenix LR35 R if you want to run 3K Lumens for extended periods of time.. never purchase a flashlight expecting it to run on turbo modes indefinately without stepping down.. the 350 and 1000 modes are super impressive and my most used.. Do your research before buying any flashlight! None of these details are hidden by Fenix.. I purchased with my own money and after weeks of use in the bush / hiking it has great runtimes, simple user interface and up / down mode selection without having to cycle through with the rotary switch, plus an excellent spot to spill ratio. each to their own accounting for personal preference.. I rate this light very highly!!

It is a blatant lie on the back of the box. Hey Sam Winter, how do you explain that 2hr 40min? What's the matter, cat got your tongue? Well, guess what, even Fenix admitted they "must" lie because "every other company lies". I emailed them simply asking why do advertise 2hr40min when it's really 2min? Fenix replied "You are correct in saying that it is untrue about the Turbo run times, but it is because our competitors all exaggerate their specs".
@@golforfishing I sold mine, it can only hit turbo mode when the battery is 85% or above. Absolute garbage... left a bad taste in my mouth and won't buy Fenix again. Sam is a good dude btw and he is happy the thing doesn't work😂😁😂

Great review. I positively love and vastly prefer the mechanical dial for flashlights, but you are right that a tailcap activation would make it the ultimate flashlight. I love mine.

Thanks for the review. I agree 100% with your comments about the ring and needing a tail switch. Without the tail switch, this light is a no go for me. I have a Jetbeam and a Sunwayman with a ring and a tail switch and I love them.
We have both a pd36r and a pd40r v2.0. Both are excellent lights. Much is made of the 40’s rotary dial. My wife carries the 36 in her purse, and likes both it’s compactness and grip. I prefer the larger grip of the 40, and also prefer the simplicity of one location for both on and intensity. I’d buy either of these again.

The lack of the tail switch is a deal breaker. Otherwise I would have bought this plus a spare battery right now to upgrade my pd35.
I got this light few days ago, I really like the beam pattern. And type C of course. Mode spacing is just right imo. My lights are usually button switch but I'm already getting use to the rotary switch, good thing is i can go directly to the brightness mode I want, no need to cycle thru.
I have the original PD40R. I am trying to sell it because I hate the side switches and the huge flood it produces. 12 minutes on turbo isn't enough for me, however I understand why it is reduced. Heat. I do think I would enjoy this light better for 2 reasons 1. Tighter beam. 2. Better UI
For most of those folks complaining about lack of a tail switch. This is a two handed operation, give the tube a 1/4 turn CCW you get into lockout mode AND you can leave the selector at any setting.

I own this and the E35v3 and I love them both. My portable sun beams.
The only issue with the E35v3 is it gets very hot on turbo, even with gloves but it is still a great light.
I couldn't agree more. The first thing I thought when I saw this light was that it would be perfect with a tail switch and have the turn dial to select the mode. It's a nice size, super bright and has usb-c charging. If they add the tail switch it will be perfect, I'd buy one in an instant.

the system of a rotary switch on the head for changing modes, combined with a tail switch for on/off, is currently protected by a patent. While that system is under patent protection, only the owners of the patent may manufacture the product.
I love the color temperature of this particular bin of LUMINOUS SST70's that Fenix uses.
I use a Fenix pd40 for HVAC and having 3K lumens in a large dark space is a real time saver when chasing conduit and stat wires, linesets etc... but the tail switch is a must. Hope they add that in V3.
Lol, I was highly considering this to compliment my SRT9 that cannot be found anymore. This is ridiculous they leave a feature like that out....smh
i agree, i think they missed a great opportunity to have the rotary switch lock into the desired brightness, then using the tailcap to activate. saves from having to push a tailcap, then switch modes, or having to rotate the bezel to the desired output everytime.

I highly agree with that light needing an additional power button. It wouldn't matter to me if it were on the tail or body.
It would make more sense on the tail just based on the position of the dial. Anywhere else on the body would just get in the way of holding it.
I've used this light for couple of days now. The two complaints about the pattern of the knurling on the switch and the lack of a tail switch are understandable but somewhat unfounded IMO. The switch "runs in" and get easier to turn after a just a little use and you build up some muscle memory. You can find the intensity you want almost instantly with the mechanical switch, negating the need for a tail switch with memory. This light is for those who prefer quick and brainless one-handed operation and who want rapid and frequent intensity change control -- and who do not normally use a light with a "hammer", head high or tactical-like grip, which a good number of us do not. One last about the knurling. It's somewhat anti-intuitive, but it turns out that horizontal knurling makes the switch operation easier and faster to use once your thumb and forefinger discover how best to manipulate it, which takes just a minute or two. The switch is effortlessly turned with a "push-pull-then-twist" of thumb and forefinger. Trying to just twist with thumb and forefinger makes the switch a little harder to turn.
Yeah those horizontal 'knurls' on the rotary dial are a silly oversight, they should be vertical. I love a tail-switch but I can see how this rotary dial has some advantages. Manually selecting the mode instead of having to 'think' about which button to press. I was considering the TK16 V2.0 3600 lumens, but might try this different style. Currently using the TK22 V2.0 but major gripe is the mode select button near the head is a p.i.t.a to find in the dark.

nitecore srt9 is basically this but better modes plus a tailswitch. magnetic ring control though. Not a big flaw for 99% of my time though even when im working around heavy duty neodymium magnets from subwoofers. Good luck getting your hands on one, they discontinued them. shame cause its my favorite longest lasting edc light of all time.
Nitecore really should reintroduce the refined version of their SRT lineup. Pity. My SRT5 still serves me well to this day.
The SRT7GT is still available from Nitecore. The GT is a slight update to the original SRT7. I've been EDCing my SRT7 since it was released a few years ago, and while it shows lots of wear, it still works perfectly.
Am rocking your torch reviews (yep, I’m a Brit, it’s a torch 😂) dunno what to buy though. But I do like the Fenix brand. Kinda dislike the Olights due to the proprietary batteries which really annoys me. Thx 😃👍🏻
I wish the MF Tactical Tango flashlight was as bright as this one. It has the dial selector, like this one, as well as an on/off plunger at the bottom. I wish I could make a hybrid of the two. haha
Another company already owns the patent on the rotary switch with a tail switch combo so it's not happening.
Hahahahaha, Holy Crap that's bright. Not an EDC but i'd love that in my hunting bag in case i get lost in the woods and need to find my way in the dark. Now all you gotta do is hook me up with a GLOVE review so i know how thick a pair i'd need to carry that around on full blast. I like my Oakley's but, they are kinda thin.
Haha Great idea! Just probably wouldn’t last very long in Turbo to get you out haha. I think it only last for a few minutes before going to the lower mode to save the voltage. Wish turbo lasted longer!
I want a light with this form factor, but have the same operation as ta21 (mechanical memory), but without the dial that turns freely, it should have stops at the first and last settings.
Add a super low setting, like 8 lumen. Put the threads near the butt - WHERE THE TAIL SWITCH SHOULD BE - and ditch the clip-on pocket clip in favor of one that is held by the the threads, so you have to remove the tailcap to unmount it. Get rid of USB charging or come up with something that's not rubber but bulletproof all the same.
I'd sell my soul for that light 😅

There are so many versions with the tailcap button that it's fine that this one has the rotary switch as an alternative. That said the grip on the switch is not well designed and will slip in many situations. I am going to add a thick tight fitting rubber ring around that section of the light to give a good grip on the switch.
I'm surprised you didn't pit it against the TK20R V2 with identical specs. Agree about the button. The dial shouldn't even have the power position. No step down is nice.
Once sand and dirt get into the dial, it will be difficult to move and will be grinding against the light. Decent for the money though. My only huge complaint is the 1 meter impact resistance which is just barely enough for walking the dog if you carry it at waist level. Good versatility and performance as usual but unfortunately the impact resistance still sucks. 2 meters should be the minimum since most people carry small lights by their head. Some other brands have better impact resistance. Aside from that it is good for the price. Companies like Fenix, Klarus, and Thrunite are great for extreme performance and versatility but that is it. Also be careful with squeezing so many lumens out of smaller lights. It has been proven that too many lumens for a small light can seriously effect reliability. Fenix has good thermal protection but I still recommend being careful.
Thanks, great review. I use the 3rd level (1000 lumens). Runtime is about 1 hour 50 minutes flat so high output stays quite the same level the whole time. No stepping down in my test because I used cooling fan. Edit... if I use the Samsung 40T battery, I also have to use a small magnet in the positive end otherwise the battery will be too short.

I have several Fenix flashlights , I purchased this pd 40r v2 , I miss the pressure activation switch , can’t get used to this dial style..
I own a Surefire U2 Ultra, and bought FOUR limited edition UM2 through Arms Unlimited. Both have 6 brightness levels through rotary switch AND a tail switch. Expensive of course, but love the interface. Would not like this essentially two handed interface.

I got this flashlight a couple of months ago. Weirdly, the 350,1000 and 3000 Lumen modes all look very much the same to me in terms of brightness and beam composition. Even if I take it outside when it's dark I cant really tell those modes apart. Am I the only one?

I ordered a spare Fenix ARB-L21-5000U rechargeable battery and when fully charged it indicates a blue light at the top of the battery but the one that came with my flashlight indicates green when fully charged. Why two different fully charged colours for the exact same batteries ?

you probably already know this, but that of bezel isn"t so much for an impact tool, but so you can see light leaking out of those waves if its placed down head first. that way you see it.

I have one and the rotary switch works fine. I read on their website their can't make a rotary+tail switch version because some other company has patented that.
The rotary dial should control the mode and they should add a tail switch that just turns it on/off

Any gloves will work. Even though I think it gets too hot for bare hands after a while, any thin gloves should do the trick.

I would want an instant turbo for defensive purposes. I really liked the more focused beam but the TK16 V2 wins with the instant 3100 lumen strobe.
TK16 v2 is the reigning king of tac lights in my opinion
Do you know if this will operate while it is attached by the USB C Cable to a 10000 MAH Booster/Charging battery Pack? A few other brands of these types of flashlights will operate while attached to a backup charging battery, but only on Medium, Its great to have the ability to have a 10K/20K battery pack in a backpack and operate the light while its attached by the USB C Cable, was wondering if this particular light has that ability. I deff for sure love the tailcap switch though… wish it had it. Deff hope they make it a future upgrade. Do you know of a similar flashlight to these that doesn’t have as much of a “wide throw beam” like in that last picture? Not sure how to describe that “technically speaking” …

Could it work if there is a tail switch but also a zero/off position on the rotary switch so that you can turn it on/off what ever way you want to, so that if the tail switch is always on you can just use rotary one without need to touch tail switch? It could work I guess but I’d still want the on/off controlled by the tail switch.
I bought an open box version, which is supposed as good as new, but I'm not happy with it. I used it as a backup to the Fenix HM65R headlamp when I'm walking my dog at 5 am. It's usually below 30 degrees now and I find the that the flashlight only provides a few minutes of 3000 lumens functionality when fully charged. I'm thinking the cold weather has somthing to do with the small amount of time I get for the 3000 lumens functionality. If I unscrew the top and put it back on, it resets the light so I get another few minutes of 3000 lumen functionality. It's not a bad light but I don't think you would get 2 hours of 3000 lumens out of this flashlight if you needed it.
I didn’t see any step down in my 2 minute heat test (which I usually do) but you’re never going to get 2 straight hours at 3000 lumens with a flashlight this size.
The 2 hour estimate is 3000 lumens and the step down to high.
The tech isn’t quite there yet.

Possible. I live near Buffalo and the cold has never really come into play for me yet.
But I rarely use turbo unless it’s necessary. I’m usually running high on all my flashlights.
Example. I just reviewed the Nitecore T4K.
Advertised as a 4000 lumen keychain flashlight but you only get 11 seconds of 4000. It them steps down to high which is 200 lumens.
So in my opinion, it’s a 200 lumen flashlight with a 4000 lumen burst.

Dear Sir, After watching your youtube clip, I purchased the Fenix PD40R V2. It is a fantastic flashlight no doubt about it. Amongst the accessories I found an O ring. What is the function of this ring? I have two Fenix and I prefer the rotary dial to the tailcap button as I can stand it upright. The type C charging port is much better then the micro USB input.
Just an extra prong if the original gets worn.
I own a fenix PD32 flashlight and I would like to tell all not to buy the flashlight… they have issues with the switch that turns the light on and off… it is very fragile and mine will not work. I had to get a new switch and now the second switch is broke with the same issue … I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU BUY A DIFFERENT BRAND !!!!
With a tail switch it would be much better for self-defence. Without it is to cumbersome in an emergency situation, too much fiddling!

Is anyone else having operating problems with this flashlight? Every time I spin the dial to the last strobe option the flashlight flashes a couple of times and goes out completely. I then have tried several times to remove battery(as once it turns off you can rotate the dial as much as you want and the flashlight remains dead)…so I reinstall full battery and the same thing happens over and over again. Could it be the battery protection circuit…or is the flashlight defective? The last thing anyone would want is a flashlight in emergency protection strobe mode turning off completely and leaving them in the dark.

Definitely charge it to full before using it.
Turbo wouldn’t work on mine until I charged it fully.

Can't hit 3000 lumens once the battery is 85% or under. Very poor design. I emailed Fenix and they confirmed this as fact, I thought mine was faulty until they confirmed it. Sold it instantly. Buyer beware, if you need that turbo feature it won't last long... No one reports on it but it's true😊
Thankfully most people never need 3000 lumens.

2 completely different lights there. As much as I like the mechanical dial here, I’d like to see it paired with a tail switch. Until then, I’d choose the PD36R over this.

The new Nitecore E4K is a bright floodlight for EDC. The Lumintop EDC18 is also a bright flood light that's slightly smaller than the E4K.

This is an EDC light. No need for a tail switch.
You didn't talk about the UI beyond the proprietary dial....how do you get Turbo and Strobe? Another "click" to the right? ? that's slow. Most lights use the double or tgripple click. FENIX should have done the same. Even in an EDC style torch.
Yes, there should be vertical grooves. Odd they didn't think of that. Should be their first thought.
Also, it's easy to over step a lumens mode in either direction. You have to "count" the clicks to the right. :) And back left.
Too expensive.. Lots of cheaper alternatives than can do more. MOre usefullumens. Better UI. $175 CAD!!! :))

@@ChrispyThings To be honest , I looked at it but the lumen output seemed low.
Even though the Warrior X Pro has less lumens, based on the two companies' figures, it has better throw.
Thankfully you will only need to use Turbo if you want to burn a hole in the sun.
Can the front bezel serve as a glass breaker?
There are no glass breaking tips on the bezel so it’s not really meant for that. But, I’m sure if you hit glass hard enough I’m sure it would break.
Yup it needs a tail switch and to retain the tail standing capability to light a room! Not a fan of all that heat. I have 1 flashlight that gets so hot by the time I notice its getting too hot and lower it it continues to increase in heat for 30 seconds so I have to drop it as my fingers cant take it. So stupid. why have this heat when there is thermal regulation in most Fenix lights.

Either it’s the camera or there is no way that’s is 3000 lumens. I have a 1200 lumen Olight Odin and it lights up my backyard compared to the 3000 lumen setting on this light.

330-million + people in the world that can see red/green light and that is what they choose to use to show charge level...they may need to rethink that.
