  • Mike is back and is at Diesel's Garage Midwest. He has to rebuild his MSD Pro Billet Distributor out of his 1963 Pro Street Nova SS. He has to get this done so that the intake can go back on. Once he blows the distributor apart, its rusty inside. He orders some new parts and show how to completely rebuild the unit. Follow along and you will find out how he breaks the distributor down, then rebuilds it using new parts. The reluctor gives him some major problems as it is rusted on. He uses a propane torch to heat up the reluctor and finally can get it to come off.

Informative video, just a heads up I had the exact corrosion problem with my distributor after being stored for only a year in doors. My Local hotrod shop guy told me that the stock msd reluctor wheel was made of ferrite material that caused the corrosion in the distributor. He mentioned that MSD has finally admitted to that happening and that is why they have the billet CNC reluctor wheel available. Its like ten times more money but I really got sick of always having corrosion under my distributor. Anyway this is just what I was told from 3rd party so maybe take a look at that. I would hate for you to rebuild everything just to have it rust again. Cheers

Verry helpful video! I guess i have the same problem. And this is cheaper then buying a whole new distributor.

I understand the rust is a byproduct of the high voltages inside the cap. I took apart an HEI that was the same way.

It's recommended that a light smear of rtv be out underneath the pickup coil. Also the pickup coil must get gapped. I gap mine at 0.18. I broke the reluctor wheel on mine. The spark plug wires got caught around the wheel and broke a tooth off. I was looking for info on how to replace the wheel and ran into your video. From what I read the wheel should press on the shaft and a specific pressing tool is used 🤷‍♂️. It seems like you didn't need a press at all. So how did it work?

On the pro distributors they were fixing them for free. I had 2 I had to send back. It was missing some coating for rust prevention on the reluctor wheel. Call them and check it was a while ago.

I wonder if their still repairing them? Mines corroded an rusty, same as my friends who brought his at the same time. Should’ve been recalled

Great video. There is .0025-.0035 air gap between reluctor and magnetic pickup per msd. After air gap is set tighten bolts and recheck gap. There will me small gap between magnetic pickup and housing. Fill will silicon and let cure before use.
