Lol yeah... Biased as hell! No microSD is getting near that SSD performance. Very unfair comparison! I have both, this is not a fair price comparison though.
@@Tony.B. Don't write nonsense. How many tests have already been - that there is no difference in FPS - that you run the game from SSD or from memory card. FPS is strictly the same. Loading speed - yes on SSD a little better. In everything else - 0 difference.
People are looking at it wrong, the 400$ steam deck is 64gb only, the 512 gb model is 650$, the rog ally comes with 512gb, for only 50$ more you can get a massive increase in performance and display quality
400$ for the steam deck, 90$ for a 1tb nvme ssd, 490$ for a 1tb steam deck..... this comparison isn't fair, ssd doesn't do anything performance wise. It's definitely fair to compare the 400$ model to the 700$ ally, only a clown would think otherwise.
Bought the ally a week and half ago. All my games run on performance mode,1080 just fine no dips or glitches. I don’t use armory crate at all. It almost bricked my ally after the initial boot/updates. After I wiped it and set it up without using AC, the ally works great! I can play all my games from epic, steam, ubisoft, and GOG. Windows was the main selling point for me. The other selling point is that I’m about to deploy and I want to play starfield while I’m deployed lol
@@chainchaserprivate how much play time do you get out of yours with high settings?I haven’t tested highs settings. The games I play don’t require it. So I play at performance mode and get 2 1/2 hours on full charge, not plugged in. So I would guess maybe half that in high settings, not plugged in.
@@chainchaserprivateexactly a lot of games either match fps or do better on higher settings. Spiderman remastered is a good example very low and medium almost get the same frames although 1% lows are worse on high settings. Jedi survivor fsr quality balanced and performance all run the same for the most part. Dead space does better on med-high mix. And there’s many more I tested that don’t benefit from low settings. Even the last of us runs almost the same on high settings lol
@@HENDO24 I play around 3 to 5 hours it depends according to the game if it's rdr2 or elder ring I play around 3.5 hours if it's multiplayer games like cod warzone, battlefield 1 which I used to play with my friends I play around 5 hours (I always play plugged in to ac or power bank)
Here’s the biggest thing that most people don’t realise… change the default vram from 4gb to 8gb in armoury crate… now run these tests again…. The ally outperforms EASILY on 15w performance mode. No performance issues whatsoever. The ally is a pc shrunk down. No triple a pc game is designed to be run on a system with less than 8gb of vram. I went from having to run fifa on low settings with strand based hair off. To running it effortlessly with high setting and strand based hair. Ultra setting if u turn the strand hair off.
One of the benefits of valve using their custom hardware is they can pre compile shaders and just include it into the game download for just about any game. Thats why the deck has a much more stable performance even if its not hitting higher numbers.
@JDabz96 nintendo has been doing that since the gameboy lol. Like I said before, pc handhelds sound good on paper, but when you're making a console or a handheld, you have to play by console, handheld rules and restrictions. There has to be a natural balance between power and framerate. Nintendo has been doing it right since day 1. Putting games first and making them run as such. All of these pc handhelds are a flop, non of them are selling like these companies want to. Switch 2 will show these wannabe handheld how to run games efficiently.
@@redcrimson1028 when I said custom os, I meant an os that bridges the gap for pc and console, this device is a pc, I can do anything windows can with this, while it still streamlines gaming on pc, Nintendo wishes they could making a PC OS that is anything like this.
@JDabz96 Actually, it's the other way around. Nintendo already has an os system in place that works, while the Deck, Rog and company is trying to find that os 🤣. So basically, my comment was right from the get go. Nintendo doesn't have to dream, because pc doesn't have their calibur games, fun factor and creative ways to play games and that's why they are winning. The steam deck and rog isn't moving units. They wish they could push the same units nintendo sold, have the popularity and charisma as Nintendo. They stole Nintendo’s idea and got nowhere with it. U think Nintendo doesn't have the money and experience to make a better pc handheld? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 the funny thing, they don't need to and besides, Nintendo doesn't follow the crowd, they do their own thing.
@redcrimson1028 fun thing about that is I can emulate just about any switch game on my steamdeck too. I sat here for hours playing mario kart 8 deluxe 2 days ago with the dlc(and i own 2 switches one being the oled). Playing pc games in a handheld is a completely different ball game than playing switch games lol.
Steam deck is very interesting for the price it offers you basically get a PC + AAA stable games to play + battery life + emulators,.. I'm more interested in buying a steam deck than a rog ally honestly.
+ with steam os, it's literally a gaming first pc experience, I would offload windows on my main rig for steam os if it wasn't for compatability with certain anticheat games.
@onomatopoeia5540 yeah ok true with like the track pads and all, but that goes to controlls. All in all I still think the sleeker look of the ROG Ally is more appealing (that's what I meant with design)
Ok this needs to be addressed because something is wrong here with your testing. The ROG Ally gets WELL over 60fps+ at 720p w/ FSR on Quality (not even balanced, performance or Ultra Performance) on 25w turbo mode. Even at 15w im getting 60fps on the ROG Ally. At 1080p turbo mode it even runs way better than what you're testing shows. I mean its not even close to the representation mine presents. How much RAM have you dedicated to the GPU? Its just such a staggering difference i had to comment. Can you provide a comment or update after you are on Bios 322? Very strange something is not right here
im starting to realize all these guys that keep saying they have such bad issues with performance are just doing it for the views.maybe they think they are the next review tech usa but they aint
@@coryvallad7578 see if I were in the market for a handheld and the algorithm bounces me around to misleading stuff like this, I might wait longer or not get the ROG Ally at all. But owning it has been a fantastic experience! Like exceeded my expectations fantastic. I cannot believe how well it performs playing PC games for a handheld device. Maybe this really was how this creators device performed, maybe there was human error, etc but that is NOT the way my or dozens of others ROG Ally has performed. Reddit has praised how well redfall runs on the Ally. There's other RUclipsrs showing ROG Ally running at 60+fps in 1080p. Hopefully it's a misunderstanding or human / driver error I'm not saying there aren't issues and Windows doesn't have quirks - course not it's windows, we all know it's wonky sometimes. Also not saying this reviewer was maliciously trying to manipulate the viewers emotions or anything that uncharitable. But tech reviewers are just as partisan as our political and economic lives, where they cherry pick specific instances where something performs better or worse and highlights it in a video making you *feel* a certain way. Also there's Steam Deck vs ROG Ally fanbois now that get off on burying one or the other. Linus vs Windows, Asus vs Valve -- very zero sum and uncharitable.
newer game should have "steam deck" graphic preset.. so people who dont want the hassle to setting it one by one could make it done with just changing the preset...
The only real big disadvantage with these pc handhelds (bedsides limitation of battery innovation) is the lack of effort in PC ports for larger games. While I wouldn’t expect Jedi Survivor to run crisply at medium settings, it shouldn’t be crashing. PC ports are the hardest as you have to account for a wide variety of specs, but at the same time, the games suffering from poor ports are most commonly the larger studios, in which, they should have the resources to make a good port.
Pretty much all the games I actually play work fine on SteamOS, that is a much better console-like experience. I also dual boot into Windows on the Steam Deck without issues. Not to play games necessarily, but it is an awesome backup computer or media streaming device on my desktop. If the Steam Deck 2 released with the same APU as the ROG Ally I’d be interested. I am NOT interested in using a desktop based OS (Windows) for gaming on a handheld device that doesn’t even have trackpads to make navigating a desktop OS more tolerable on a handheld. For $360 the Steam Deck is an awesome deal. Twice the price gets you better benchmarks on the ROG Ally, but I don’t like buying from companies whose motherboards catch on fire and still won’t give a refund. Why would you buy their first handheld?
If it wasn't for windows on a handheld, and other issue that's hardware and software related, I would've got the ally too, but the steam deck has more than blown me away in the last year
@E55666 games are made for windows, even though its a crappy bloated os, that forces you to download unwanted things, Steam OS on the other hand is simple and literally streamlines gaming on PC, just click play and your in... if it wasn't for the monopoly windows has on the PC market, it would already be obsolete
@JDabz96 Oh alright I agree with you there. I do think windows is the best choice though only because of compatibility. I'd switch in an instant if there was a better choice in that regard
@E55666 windows has games made to work on it, the steam deck and steam os have to figure out the code for each game to work, and so far they got about 90% of all games working, that 10 percent is mostly just anticheat blocked games, the devs only let there games work on windows, which is stupid
Something is seriously wrong with your system. These numbers are not matching mine at all. Some of these comparisons should have set off a red flag for you that something is wrong with your Ally
I think you should include both plugging it with higher wattage to show the real power of the ally vs deck because portability doesn't really necessarily need to be on battery mode all the time portability means "The Ability to Easily be Carried or Moved' which is very useful for people who work overseas, international students, bringing it in hotels, airport, cruise ship, in friends house, parents house, visiting sibling overseas, being out for a couple of days or months or years in other place wheather its on vacation or visiting and other more which can all be played plugged -in still portable because you can bring it anywhere that is why we should consider plugged - in review in higher wattage. ROG ally can reach up to 30 watts when plugged in.
Buy a portable console to play from an outlet? You're a comedian, aren't you? It's like buying a car and walking. Buy a plug and eat with your hands. Something like that. There are laptops for the kind of gaming you're describing. A Rog Ally with a 30 minute battery just isn't necessary.
@@TheJoinqwerty Dude, I already explained for whom it's used. If it doesn't work for you, it doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't work for others as well. Airports, Hotels, Cruiseships, Overseas, Cafe doesn't have an outlet? Its portable because you can bring it anywhere. Laptops are not handheld its portable but not handheld. And what is the connection of buying a car and walking ? You can still play ally while plugged right? So what is the connection ?
@@TheJoinqwerty No different than buying a "portable" laptop and having to run off battery most of the time. You really didn't understand his point, did you? Both the Ally and SD are portable devices, meaning they can be easily moved from one location to another. The fact is, both of them have terrible battery life so trying to make an argument that the SD is better because of battery use, well, it's a pipe dream. Try playing a game on a laptop w/controller while riding on a bus or train. It's not exactly easy whereas the SD and Ally both shine in that regard. And when it comes to battery life, you might check out Tom's Hardware comparison review of the SD and Ally. The Ally blasted past the SD in web surfing testing by about 50% (5:51 versus 3:50) and edged out the SD in artificial gaming (PCMark10) 1:43 to 1:40.
@@flarkjohnson6785 It's not true that I'd have to be on the charger all the time. Cyberpunk 2077 - you can play on 10 watts in unloaded scenes. In busy scenes you can play at 12 watts - and at fairly high settings. The same goes for other games. For example, in the original Mount and Blade - I can play at 3 (!!!) watts. This is about 6 - 6.30 hours of play. On average from 8 to 10 watts in many games is quite possible to play. And all this - without undervolting and without Crioutilites. Total we get - from 2.30 hours to 6 hours of play on Steam Deck. And how does that compare to the 1 hour battery life of the Rog Ally?
Keep in mind, this is after a year of valve tweaking Proton and specifically optimizing games for the Steam Deck. It’s only been 2 weeks for the Ally and it plays most games better. The last of us part 1 plays way better on the ROG Ally, the main selling point for me. Always wanted to play that game on the go, properly.
Yea, the difference is valve is making a whole new OS, the most the ally can do is firmware and apps.... in one year Steam OS has gotten crazy far for being this young, and it's only going to improve and so is compatibility, eventually devs won't be able to ignore this device, steam os is literally a custom OS just for this device, and it can only get better. And TLOU p1 works great on deck since the latest update.
but the steam os is much more comfortable. No constant useless updates, no bloatwares, no pre-installed useless apps, and much more gamer friendly... of course it has some downsides but for me its much better than messing with windows all the time, and tweaking everything
Deck fanboys are the worst and delusional as hell the only rational explanation would be the price if you couldn't afford the ally or you prefer the custom OS vs windows and I wouldn't argue that but everything else, all the BS excuses is rubbish.
The battery life is the deal breaker fore on the Ally, you're better off spending $700 on a laptop with a dedicated gpu which will give far superior graphics. People forget a GTX 1650 runs 40-60% better than either of these.. I personally play older games and indie titles on my deck, I also use it to test different games on gamepass cloud to see if I like them, in which case I get 4-5 hours cloud gaming.
There's a few things to remember with this, to me these devices are what gaming laptops were supposed to be. A gaming laptop is big to carry around and requires a fair amount of space to pull out (imagine being on a train/bus and trying to make space). You'll also need additional pheriphals and a plug to even take advantage of the increased speed. Lastly laptops have huge heat problems just like handhelds, and would never seen that level of an edge in performance in this price range.
@@jasondwimes8612dk man, it literally has a custom os built around gaming, it's so much better than windows. That alone sold me on the steam deck, performance and a nice screen only mean so much, especially when the device has tons of software issues and a massive hardware issue.... Asus isn't even doing anything about half of it...
@@jasondwimes8612 To be fair, he has both of them, so no point in fanboying. And pricing is correct, it's twice the price of the Deck at discount, no denying that.
Heh - Dude - I play Redfall in 50-60fps on ROG - You f...ed up something. - it plays way better than Steam Deck. Some games works literally 100% better on ROG - NfS Unbound is 1080p60 on Steam Deck 720p30 with drops.
100% facts here. He's needs to issue a retraction and update filming all the settings in game as well as command center after a fresh restart and Bios 322
The best thing about the ally? You can go to your local best buy and buy it. You cant do that with steam deck. I want to try the damn thing first before I decide I want to keep it.
Screen on the Ally was amazing. But that’s really the only nice thing about it. Battery is short. Layout feels off with certain games. Gets hot if you want to play any game at a decent fps(requires to have the highest wattage) fried one of my Sd cards. Had issues with the buttons getting stuck. And issues with the touchscreen. Returned it to best buy and the worker even said they were trash and that everyone was returning them. He pointed to where they had the returns. And there was easily 8 returned ones. Probably more.
Wow !!!!!! 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 not surprised at all. I have both as well, the only deal breaker for me was the 35-45 minutes battery life. The analogs are bad too, but the battery life is what killed it for me.
I live somewhere else but here are people also returning the Ally a lot. Including me. I love the display and speakers of the Ally but that’s about it. Everything else is better with the Deck.
As a ROG Ally owner, I don't have too many complaints but the experience is akin to setting up an annoying Windows PC and having to deal with those minor aches and pains. What tilted my choice over the Steam Deck was the portability, I can stuff it into a small sling bag (no need to carry a full backpack around). And despite all my problems with windows its the only choice for a lot of older or more obscure games who's developers don't have resources to debug SteamOS specific issues. (That said, since its a windows first handheld, they really, really should have put in a touchpad.) I think you can't go wrong with either though, just find your use case.
this video really doesnt do the rog ally justice cause windows being windows not really good at, handling gpu vram and ram unlike steam os thats why on some occasion you get better performance on the deck is because the rog ally might be set to auto vram or 4gb which is not really that good in terms of performance i believe me i own a deck then upgraded to rog ally i run all the games i run into my deck almost all of them with significant performance boost even in 18w yeah 15w deck might be good but 18w with correct vram it blows the deck out of the water
Still going to defend the Ally. A lot of people are saying its a marginal difference to the steam deck but if you actually sit down with the device and learn how to use it properly and tweak it properly you can literally play anything.
It's just a clickbait! I have both devices Far Cry 5 Ally Z1 Extreme: 60 FPS (Locked, no drops) on 720p, RSI On, High Graphics Steam Deck: Struggling with 40 FPS on low settings
one thing here is that you should plug in your Rog ally for the 35W boost manual tdp and set it all to max, the rog ally is still not fully using its power here tbh at 25W unplugged, also set a higher fan curve on the rog ally so it can have a much more stable performance
There a so many things done wrong in this video. Manual settings and fan curve i almost double many of the results he has with the Ally. The only way the Ally drops to SteamDeck level is at 15 watt TDP in very specific games. At low TDP, it's another story though.
@@SIMPLEisWIN There are two different issues adressed here...Anybody who also got the Ally can see that there is a problem with the results in the video. I get way better results even unplugged without much tinkering and let's not talk about personal setting + fan curve + plugged. On top of that, it being a handheld does not mean you can't plug it...Planes, hotels, at work, at home... There are many instances where you can play with it plugged in. To be frank, i can even charge my console in the commute where i live. There is also the possibility to use a power bank, etc. Why not consider that playing plugged is part of the experience too? Actually i'm pretty sure there are more people playing with both the Deck and Ally plugged than there are using them unplugged.
If you need to plug in a "handheld" to boost to 35w to beat a 15w chip handily then you've completely lost the plot and the whole idea of what a handheld is. Everyone gets that its more powerful but really the difference between RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 is abysmal at best. Most of the gains seen is from the extra 4 cu's and higher boost clock.
@@JayTsPhoto Let's get things clear : The Ally, plugged or unplugged, and for anything above 10 watts TDP runs circle around the Deck. In the Video it's already showing(there is one exception) but what's weird is that even with those results he definitely has poor performances compared to many Ally owners experiences and even videos shown even in RUclips.... I personally almost have double the performances that he has in some games, at the same TDP, and the Ally can go up to 25 Watts unplugged and 35 plugged. Let's not forget that if you use Universal X86 Tuning Utility, the advantage the Deck has at 15 Watts and lower is way more marginal as it actually adressed the tendency of the Ally's to overspend and actually act as a really efficient governor but it's only interesting for very low profile games or old games requiring from 3-9 watts and even there you keep the console on silent mode and all games run fine. It's just that the Ally without the Tool tends to use more power that required... As a Owner of both the Ally and the Deck(tweaked with Cryobites tool, and PowerTools). One thing is for sure : plugged or unplugged and even at it's highest 15 watts TPD ( and even overclocked to higher ones with plugins) you'll never play Resident Evil 4 Remake, Control Sf6, Like a Dragon, Sekiro, Elden Ring, etc. At 720p60 with medium to high settings on the Deck. And it goes the same with recent high profile games. What you will obtain in said scenario is barely a 720p30 or 40, fsr on performance/balance and a mix of low to medium settings with a marginal high... AT BEST...And i'm not mentioning the better screen, sound, etc.
I bought Steam Deck because I think ROG Ally is losing performance due to all Windows garbage like antivirus and telemetry. And Proton has been performing well over the last few years, with the constant work being done to improve compatibility of various games with Proton.
Bloatware and antivirus can be completely turned off with literally a single program and button. After that, you're set and your performance almost doubles in almost all games compared to the steam deck and then you also have a higher refreshrate and a 1080p screen. You shoot for the oled model, you're paying only $50 less at best cause the Ally is even cheaper now. So honestly there's less and less reason to use a steam deck cause even the ally can be dual booted as well. Either way, your choice but the best value is still the ally.
@@pushpopLoC909 you can't totally turn off antivirus in windows 10/11, it will turn on again after reboot at least real time defence. Buying ally to use dual boot is even more strange when the price of ally includes a windows license (~200$ pro version, i hope less). And windows forced update policy can break system at any time, because updates can't be fully tested and optimized for one specific device because of proprietary os. If ally used ltsc, then using windows would be less of a concern.
You literally have a misleading thumbnail. Delete this video and try again you missed it by a mile. There is no chance that the SD gets better FPS than the ROG Ally unless you are inept or are purposely throttling TDP. You also have RSR with ROG Ally, VRR , and a 120hz Screen.
Winning point of Ally is (its a portable pc) You can play and shit I have work to do. For work from home peeps, instead of carrying a laptop, u can just carry this and small keyboard and mouse, plug it on the hotels Tv, perfection.
I still think this is unfair to test this PC's by always setting ROG Ally to 720p. Why more powerfull thing is being tested with LOWER resolution than steamdeck? If Ally has more horsepower then they should be tested in their native resolutions. Or at least set Ally to 900p.
While I do appreciate your video, I feel like both tests don't fully showcase the capabilities of both consoles. Both of the consoles i feel are not optimized based on your tests Example: Spider-Man on my Steam deck definitely gets its full resolution, looks great and I'm getting consistent 40 FPS while being able to use the gyro controls with 3 hours battery life. Starwars gets the same. The same could be said about the ally. I don't have any personal experience on it but I've seen people have much more stable experience with all those games. Its not all about pushing all of the settings to the highest and seeing what frame rate you get. Being able to provide consistent frame rates, having it look good, and a decent battery is what you need on these mobile units. Screen sizes these small you dont need to max out the settings on any of those games. 80% of the people wont even notice the differenfe past medium for most games.
How do you get spider man and Star Wars to be consistent 40 fps? I want to buy one of these consoles and if I can save and get the steam deck I want to.
I'd gladly play 720p on Ally if it can maintain stable 60fps. But the hardware problems like with failing sd card has turned me off. Hope they'll make a second revision
The SD issues seem annoying. I have not yet had it myself luckily. A good thing is that an internal SSD upgrade is very easy on the Ally. So I guess buying a 1tb SSD replacement is a better solution for some. The prices have gone down a bit for the 2230 SSDs luckily. I'm considering it down the line for my Ally, as I could probably pop the 512gig SSD into my Surface (that only has 256gb)
This is probably the most Biased comparison i've ever seen, I've tested all of these games on both systems and the difference is night and day in favor of the ally not to mentioned not having to run through hoops on ProtonDB just to install a game.
I havnt ran into any hoops... I can just install and play most games without even tinkering... way easier than windows, proton is just a layer I can turn on for better compatibility, and that's just a few clicks to turn on. Proton is amazing, your crazy man
Where did you get the value from? The steam deck for the 512gbnvme comes at 649 rn with the 20% is 519.20 the base model comes around 300 and its 64gb(emmc which is slower then the nvme)
Deck is great for $400 but for $699, you get a far better display, more hz , almost 2x performance, 512GBSSD , RGB, a lighter weight handheld I think it ultimately depends on what you value more What I hated about the deck is that pretty much every AAA game ran 30- 40 fps at lowest possible settings With ROG, , more like 45-60 depending on resolution and has more flexibility on settings (meaning can turn it up) Windows sucks yes, but it also runs every single game period. Again, just depends on what you value most
You compared Jedi fallen order at two different parts of the game. The first part of that game destroys most systems and is a noticeable increase in performance when you get to the first planet. Sure, the ally" should" run it better, but it's not a fair comparison between the two pieces of hardware
that was jedi survivor, the sequel of fallen order. it’s infamous for the very poorly optimized performance in any PC. I myself ran jedi fallen order just fine on my steam deck, but to be able to run the sequel for 40fps is great.
On software end Steam deck will always have better optimised OS than Rog , but with Rog you get all of normal windows utilities so its a hand held laptop.
I don't know where he found the price but coming from Canada and I can confirm that what he told you is false, it is more expensive than $500 before taxes.
i have the OLED steam deck and the Rog Z1 extreme and i can honestly say the rog is better period! steam deck feels better to hold and the battery life is great but that is all it does better. every single game ive played on both device the rog ran them better and it looked better as well. I dont play a bunch of AAA games but of the games i play, genshin impact, scarlet nexus, tales of arise, ff7 remake nier automata and persona 5 the rog played them flawlessly at 1080 and the steam ran them ok...scarlet nexus was the biggest problem it had a weird ghosting effect on the character which hurt my eyes after a while. im returning the steam deck maybe once we get a steam deck 2 i'll get one. lastly i know people make a big deal about battery life but when you honestly think about it, outside of long flights or drives battery life isnt the be all end all.
The Rog Ally is significantly more powerful than the Steamdeck, but it comes at the cost of battery life. That's not great for a portable gaming computer.
I think I would prefer the Steam deck over ROG Ally even though most of the game the ROG have higher FPS. It's a handheld though so the CPU tdp should also be consider. The steam deck draw about ~27w while ROG ally need to draw ~42w, which is HUGE difference in tdp. Maybe If we could bring Steam deck tdp equal to ROG ally, the steam deck might perform better.
@nasheemwhye5197 someone did a mod and got there deck past 40w, it was only like a 20% performance increase across the board, it was cool but not practical at all lol
@@JDabz96 cool but I wasn't referring to the deck I was referring to the ally it will burst to 40 watts for like a split second and then go down to 30 watts or lower.
Thing about the ally is, 5 people can review the same game 2 of them getting around 55+ fps and the other 3 getting 25 fps😂😂 I dont know if each system really is that different or people really are fan boys and are out to make ally look bad.. Either way can't wait to get my ally.
This review kind of irritates me, because there is a bit of misinformation happening and some info is just left out. For example, the video opens up going over price - what it doesnt tell you is it's using the price of the cheapest Deck with the lowest storage capacity that most will want to upgrade ($$$) - he does say it is the "base" steam deck, but there is a caveat there some may not know about. Secondly, the reviewer says he is using the maximum wattage on both devices - that's not true and again there is a caveat there. The Ally can be run at 30W plugged in and increase frame rates - nothing huge, but the functionality is there and it only widens the gap in performance between the two devices in most games. I own both of these devices and there is something magical happening with the Steam Deck. But I also think that if you're getting the $650 version of the Deck, the extra $50 for the RoG Ally is worth it, because it does generally run games better and you don't have to jump through hoops to play games on other platforms that aren't steam. If you want the lower capacity Deck and will upgrade it's storage, knock yourself out - the value to performance proposition is insane and the reviewer is on point in that respect.
Rog ally might be more powerful, but that doesn't mean is better optimized. Also... Turn off the lights on ally. It kills battery, and power really fast. Overall, I'm going for the deck with windows 11 it doesn't run bad at all! ;) Also.. tweaks are good for both
Yeah stop watching these videos… if you think their performance are even close you lost your damn mind. I’ve been playing my Ally for a while and especially after the recent update, no game I play has less than 60fps. The deck even in its current and most recent state bounce between 30-50fps. These people make videos but don’t know how to optimize windows 11 for its highest performance. My first game on COD Warzone I got 4 kills going at 70fps. You send me to a video where any Deck (in its current state) gets 70fps on COD. None of them do. You can’t even go past 60hz. Some of these reviewers don’t even go into game settings on the Rog to take off the 60hz cap and set it to 120hz. On monster hunter rise I get 100fps easily at 30w. This guy in the video had his Rog Unplugged and only at 25w so he lied about it being at max.
@@jayinhd4296 Your whole mini essay proves why majority of people will ALWAYS prefer the steamdeck over the ally. Look at all the settings and tdps and blah blah blah that you had to tweak to get your device running well. All I gotta do is just turn on my steamdeck and start playing. The steamdeck was never all about power and etc. It's usability and comfortability is it's main selling points. And you get that level of comfort at an extremely affordable price. SteamOS and it's UI will always be easier to use than windows. The steamdeck is a console with PC capabilities. The rog ally is a PC with a nice screen & a controller attached to it, so it comes with all the problems a PC has. It's not the the video maker's fault that he couldn't "unlock the full potential" of the ally. It shouldn't be that hard/complicated in the first place. He'd never have those problems with a steamdeck though ;)
@@h.serafin1489 you do know without the windows tweaks goofball after the recent update the Ally has better performance than the Deck??? Maybe you haven’t caught up yet. The extra tweaks are for fun and to get even more power. The Deck is trash and it’s just cheap which is why it’s sells. Not because it’s so awesome dude. They have a cheap one available which is still trash. People like you just need to be quiet because y’all are the same ones trying to dual boot windows dude so please stop. I haven’t seen so many proud but jealous people in my life. Hundreds of dual boot videos for the Deck, but oh y’all hate windows so much. @@h.serafin1489pretty funny how steam deck/valve fan boys always switches the argument...when the deck is inferior in terms of software compared to the Nintendo switch then they are all about power and performance yet when the deck is inferior hardware-wise compared to the Ally then let's talk about software. Steam Os is limited with compatibility issues and pretty useless / held back if you want to use it for anything aside playing "verified" steam games. The ease of use is out of the window when you try anything that's not readily steam deck verified or playing off steam platform. To get an inferior level of the beautiful display of the Ally you need to install another application, vibrant deck, how the hell is this a console experience? Never had to install anything on the Switch to get those beautiful OLED screen popping. Cope the Ally is the superior handheld and you can get more out of it aside gaming. Is it what it is.
rog did not care about there sofware and design much its like they made this for kids however steam deck look good and has really good UI and they actually cared while making steam deck

@@lrs7677steam decks screen is definitely not horrible, you definitely never used one, stop being a 🤡. With things like vibrantdeck, the steam decks screen looks really good. It's a 7inch screen, not a TV....
Slighty better for double the price and more than double the battery usage. You didn't mention this but it basically was using 40w the whole time (vs ~15w on steam deck)
But does it make sense playing at 720p when ur paying more money for a better screen only to have thick black bars? Then, when u use full power at 1080p, u get just over an hour be4 ur plugged to a wall anyway. Good video, and Monday can't come soon enough steam deck oled yup yup
Ok lemme tell you something big youre misunderstanding here. This is not a true comparison between these devices because when it comes to performance the rog ally will obviously be better its just a more powerful system. This is really about the games and their optimization and how well theyre implementation is. If a game runs better on the steam deck then its only because of its compatability and performance thats it and you just so happened to pick the worst optimized games out there redfall, jedi fallen order and hogwarts are terribly optimized games. Now we take a well optimized game and the rog ally will wipe the floor with the steam deck but the steam deck is for a different audience. The steam deck is at a great price to performance but eventually you'll be hungry for more performance its like buying a v6 muscle car sooner or later youll want that sweet sweet v8 power. Also your being misleading with the price difference. Since the rog ally comes standard with a 512 sd card you cant compare thatcwith the 64gb steam deck price point you need to compare that to the steam decks 512 model making the rog ally the clear bargain since your getting way better performance for only $50 more. So there goes your whole stupid argument have a nice day coping lol
Such a misleading thumbnail, seeing as you used the temporary sale price of the cheapest model steamdeck (a model will cost more whether you decide to replace the ssd of get a micro sd because 64gb could never be enough storage for anything).
No offence but your comparison is misleading, unfair and far from corect. First of all put the rog ally fps interface on screen, second of all with some minor updates, optimisation and tweaks you are getting a much better performance ,stable performance and not least you can't compare a 64 gb mme with a 512 gb ssd( 25 % slower, not only capacity) The correct comparison is 649 usd vs 699 usd. The rog ally is superrior in every aspect: processor, screen, accesibility and so on
did you run all games in the 400$ base steam deck? Or dou you need to spend extra on a SD card? if so please take such a thing in consideration next time.

Really disappointed in the ally..definitely not "upgrading" for double the price it just doesn't seem worth it at all if performance was double or close too I would switch
Turn both up to the highest setting and the Ally smashes the Steam Deck. Not even a discussion. The only discussion is if you want to pay $300 more for a better looking smoother gaming experience. Not to mention the Ally will be able to handle future games better.
The steam deck runs games better at lower tdp. It will always run any game better, even triple AAA at 30fps because valve perfectly optimizes its settings. 20 years from now it will still run the most current games at 30fps because Valve supports its community.
The point is if you are going to compare max prices do not compare the cheapest version of a device compared to the most expensive. There is a 600 version of the ally coming out.
@@robertbond3680do you not know about the devices you talk about? One of the benefits of valve using their custom hardware is they can pre compile shaders and just include it into the game download for just about any game. Thats why the deck has a much more stable performance even if its not hitting higher numbers.
I'll take a custom os built with gaming in mind first, over better performance, and a screen.

Well no shit the ally will play better, it's double the price 😂
after a year of tweaking, Ally still fries SD cards
but the steam os is much more comfortable.
Lastly laptops have huge heat problems just like handhelds, and would never seen that level of an edge in performance in this price range.
get a ryzen laptop you could easily get 6-9 hours batter life 😂 Intel sucks.
can I get a recommendation for a $700 laptop? im stil on the fence on what to get

the reason rog was stuttering in hogwarts legacy is because of shader compilation while in steam deck value provide you the shader of supported games

Lol sounds so 80’s/mid 90’s.
@@CenobiteBeldar well the apple vision pro kinda does it, but that's it's entire battery.
Any PD/65W or greater power pack will work, if that's what you want to do.
Just Velcro any battery bank.
a powerbank in the backback with a 2m cable does a better job. no need for wild west feeling with a powerbank.
Still going to defend the Ally. A lot of people are saying its a marginal difference to the steam deck but if you actually sit down with the device and learn how to use it properly and tweak it properly you can literally play anything.
It's just a clickbait! I have both devices
Far Cry 5
Ally Z1 Extreme: 60 FPS (Locked, no drops) on 720p, RSI On, High Graphics
Steam Deck: Struggling with 40 FPS on low settings
Redfall plays way better for my ally
People play that game???
one thing here is that you should plug in your Rog ally for the 35W boost manual tdp and set it all to max, the rog ally is still not fully using its power here tbh at 25W unplugged, also set a higher fan curve on the rog ally so it can have a much more stable performance
There a so many things done wrong in this video.
Manual settings and fan curve i almost double many of the results he has with the Ally.
The only way the Ally drops to SteamDeck level is at 15 watt TDP in very specific games.
At low TDP, it's another story though.
But it's a handheld, that's supposed to be played unplugged..
I already have pc thats why i choose steam deck, because its more like console.
lol I hate videos that lie.. my rog ally never ran a game 19fps.. lmao,it’s always 50 or over .. and it blows the steam deck away..
I bought Steam Deck because I think ROG Ally is losing performance due to all Windows garbage like antivirus and telemetry. And Proton has been performing well over the last few years, with the constant work being done to improve compatibility of various games with Proton.
Windows is indeed garbage
Winning point of Ally is (its a portable pc)
You can play and shit I have work to do.
Both of the consoles i feel are not optimized based on your tests
Example:
Spider-Man on my Steam deck definitely gets its full resolution, looks great and I'm getting consistent 40 FPS while being able to use the gyro controls with 3 hours battery life.
You did not say that the ROG Ally does not have a touch pad, so you can't play any of the RTS / RTT / City Builder games on it.
Wondering what bios r u using 317 319 or the new update 322
Proton is amazing, your crazy man
Facts the ally is way better
Where did you get the value from?
The steam deck for the 512gbnvme comes at 649 rn with the 20% is 519.20
the base model comes around 300 and its 64gb(emmc which is slower then the nvme)
he's a steamdeck fanboi, he's trying to push the steamdeck above the Rog ally..
Just upgrade the internal ssd and still way cheaper than the ally
Deck is great for $400 but for $699, you get a far better display, more hz , almost 2x performance, 512GBSSD , RGB, a lighter weight handheld
I think it ultimately depends on what you value more
What I hated about the deck is that pretty much every AAA game ran 30- 40 fps at lowest possible settings
With ROG, , more like 45-60 depending on resolution and has more flexibility on settings (meaning can turn it up)
Windows sucks yes, but it also runs every single game period.
Again, just depends on what you value most
Why am I happy playing Fallout 4 on 120hz on an ROG Ally. With a 99%SRGB IPS Screen.
Sorry for your money waste.
What is this Rogue Ally you speak of?
On software end Steam deck will always have better optimised OS than Rog , but with Rog you get all of normal windows utilities so its a hand held laptop.
To be fair you didn’t plug the ally into the power it can draw more
I don't know where he found the price but coming from Canada and I can confirm that what he told you is false, it is more expensive than $500 before taxes.
i have the OLED steam deck and the Rog Z1 extreme and i can honestly say the rog is better period! steam deck feels better to hold and the battery life is great but that is all it does better. every single game ive played on both device the rog ran them better and it looked better as well.
Your description says "Red Fall" is a popular AAA title. Didn't that game fucking fail tremendously down the dark hole of shitty games.
It does not draw 42 watts it will burst for about a split second up to 40watts and dip down to 30 watts when plugged in.
@nasheemwhye5197 someone did a mod and got there deck past 40w, it was only like a 20% performance increase across the board, it was cool but not practical at all lol
@@JDabz96 look good lol why not then?
It wouldnt. The cpu limitation and weaker overall hardware wouldnt cut it.
Nah it's just buggy windows trash
Ally is a fucking worse handheld on earth
If you want the lower capacity Deck and will upgrade it's storage, knock yourself out - the value to performance proposition is insane and the reviewer is on point in that respect.
so which one should i buy steam deck or rog ally??
help me decide guys pls which one better?
ROG ally is more powerful and has windows. Steam deck OLED looks good and steam OS is best stability than windows and feels more like a console.
Rog ally might be more powerful, but that doesn't mean is better optimized. Also... Turn off the lights on ally. It kills battery, and power really fast. Overall, I'm going for the deck with windows 11 it doesn't run bad at all! ;) Also.. tweaks are good for both
we will see next 6 months
I’m sure you never played on a gaming PC or on the Ally because once you set it up goofball you don’t have to keep setting it up. You can literally start the game soon as you start the Ally. Even armory crate starts up soon as you start the Ally and you can immediately click your game. Just enjoy your Deck while I enjoy Call of Duty without having to dual boot windows.
Sell your steam deck for the rog ally, you all will thank me later. The rog ally makes the steam deck look like it was released 10 years ago. That's how good it is

Ally is much more powerful than steam deck but the optimization is much worse
on most games have had success when I set the shadows to low, ant aliasing to low but keep the rest of the settings set to high and turn off post processing such as motion blur, chromatic aberration, noise filter
The switch isn't relevant for any kind of performance tests
is this the z1 extreme? or the normal version?
the lower performance on some games with the ally is probably due to dxvk, for example dxvk doubles performance on immortals fenyx rising

You can get a steam deck for 320$ now, the ally is still 700$+ more than double the price now
and emulation? its second to none 100% of playable switch games runs well on rog ally all thanks to its, beefy apu specifically its cpu,
Such a misleading thumbnail, seeing as you used the temporary sale price of the cheapest model steamdeck (a model will cost more whether you decide to replace the ssd of get a micro sd because 64gb could never be enough storage for anything).
Rog Ally Z1 Extreme = Switch/Switch OLED.
Steam Deck = Switch Lite.

30-40 mins battery life of rog ally? . I was planning to get one but I really need to rethink on my decision.
I played Jedi Survivor on steam deck all the way through, medium settings locked to 40fps no fsr. It played flawlessly.

You can get a steam deck for 320$ now man! The ally isn't worth the price difference to me, I would rather get a gaming laptop at that point.
Who wants to play redfall at all??
Ally highest specs is $700 but Deck highest specs is $650, not $350
Only difference between the steam deck versions is the ssd storage, and the highest specs model is at sale for 520$ right now
