1. Everyone, even Captains powerful as Shunsui and Ukitake are shown to be afraid of her. ( flashback in episodes 207-211 i cant remember)
2. Her fake name, Retsu, means "violent" or fierce", hinting at her true nature.
3. In the SS arc, she is the first Captain to notice something is off about Aizen's death (even while under complete hypnosis. When she arrives in the Underground Meeting assembly area after Aizen waxes Hitugaya, he acknowledges that he thought she would be showing up soon.
4. If you recall Kenpachi's backstory flashback from the SS arc, he tells Yachiru that he named her after the one person he admires and respects. The First Kenpachi, Unohana Yachiru is that person.

Kenpachi is the title that is only given to the strongest Shinigami. It is an ironclad rule that there can be only one Kenpachi per generation, meaning that the predecessor must die for the killer to succeed the title. To inherit this title, the candidate must kill the current Kenpachi in battle. This is the reason why they fighting again and just like Shunsui said if they cross blade again 1 of them must die. It's not just to power up Zaraki but also to settle everything between this two.

in any era, there can be only be one kenpachi but the kenpachi doesn't have to die to pass on the title. this is proven by unohana when she retired as the 11th division captain and as a kenpanchi to pass on her title to the next kenpachi. but the tradition of killing another captain to become the new captain is not a foreign concept in the 11th division squad. and since unohana's retirement, 10 kenpachis have served as 11th division captains. zaraki killed kenpachi kiganjo to obtain the captain title, as he already titled himself kenpachi. azashiro soya, the 8th kenpachi, is still alive and lurking in the muken, the same prison unohana and zaraki had their fatal zanjutsu duel. he's regularly seen by aizen walking free in the vicinity as they're both in the same prison.
The reason they were fighting was for unohana to teach kenpachi to use shikai and bankai

Zaraki was equally powerful to Unohana when he was a kid. At least this is what Kubo has established in the manga. When he fought Unohana as a kid, he subconsciously surpressed his power afraid that he might loose her as a worthy opponent, and subsequently after the fight Unohana 'retired' from being a killing machine, becoming a pacifist. When Zaraki succeeded in awakening his Zanpakuto, we can see his ridiculous power boost, managing to cleave a humongous meteor by just using a Shikai. That is a testament of his true power, which i don't think Unohaha could rival, if we talk about brute strength. I am sad to see Unohana had to die but at least we sufficiently well informed in the manga that she might have trained Isane, Hanataro and other seated officers in Squad 4 well enough to do deeds as expected in Gotei 13.

The reason Unohana & Zaraki had to fight to the death was not because Unohana had to be sacrificed. It was due to the Kenpachi rules, there can be only one Kenpachi.
This fight is truly an epic one. Zaraki is fighting to kill the one he admires in order to gain the name of Kenpachi once and for all. And Unohana is basically taking out her anger on Zaraki, the anger she kept inside because of the death of the head captain.
Ah right! There can only be one! Can't wait to see next week's episode. It's gonna be a sad one. 🥲

It definitely would have been amazing to have both warriors live and fight on. Either way, the Shinigami will gain a truly beast of a warrior.

Tahts 100% untrue. There are multiple alive (and imprisoned) Kenpachi. The reason she had to die, was that Zaraki put a limit on himself so he would never surpass Unohana. If she didn't push him to the point of killing her, he would have just gone back to his limit and not actually released all of his power. It was literally said in the episode.
