"There is no way it ends on a note on beat one of the next bar “, bruh, the name of the song should give you a hint; Subtle change including the Forest of TRANSITION AND DISSATISFACTION Dance. It's meant to be abrupt and for that I just love it. Always puts a smile on my face, great stuff.
Loved your expression when the extreme death metal bits hit :) One of the things I love about Rivers of Nihil is how prominent the bass lines usually are. I feel like a lot of metal bands I listen to drown out the bass in the mix, so that I don't even notice it. But Rivers of Nihil has such groovy interesting bass lines going on in their stuff.
Russian Circles (Arluck), Black Crown Initiate (Stench Of The Iron age), Archspire (Relentless Mutation), and The Ocean Collective (Devonian) are also bands with prominent basslines among their songs. In case you were looking for bands with delicious basslines. Also Ne Obliviscaris (Devour Me Colossus), but I'm sure you know them if you're watching a reaction to Rivers of Nihil.
@@Ivan-ow5xc That Black Crown Initiate song was awesome!! And what a great intro -- both bass and everything else. I've seen the band's name floating around but never got around to listening to them until now. Thanks for the rec! Now to check out the other ones....
Next Rivers song you check out should be “The Silent Life”. Also for warning, Owls is the outlier for this band. They are more of a death metal band that does all kinds of other stuff.
This track is an introspective look back at how their sound has transitioned over the years. Their first two albums were so much heavier than their last one, a lot more straight up death metal with a big emphasis on technicality. With their third album “Where Owls Know My Name” they started drawing on 60s and 70s prog for inspiration and ended up making a less intense and more proggy album. Sadly I suspect that it would still be a bit heavy for your tastes, they’re still a death metal band at heart.
It’s funny you mention that “there’s no way that ends on just a note” thinking that it transitions into the next track, because it totally doesn’t transition lol. It’s actually the only part of the album that reall throws me off. Anyway, I absolutely love this song, they do so much cool stuff and that sax solo really gets me every time. One of my favorites for sure.
Thanks for revisiting Rivers, really enjoyed. they’re such a great band. If you’re looking for bands similar to them check out track Selves we cannot forgive from band Black crown initiate
Been a busy week so gotta go back and watch the other videos. What a great song/album! The entire album is a masterpiece in modern Prog tech death (much more Prog than tech). This song, to me, is much heavier in mood. Their use of classic death metal tropes infused with lighter jazz/the organ sounds creates a nice clash. That funky guitar riff is one of my favorite moments in recent years. It holds down the time while everyone else is doing their thing, but it’s so irregular! Love it! Just some thoughts. Thanks for the video! Hope ya check our the entire album. The last song has one of my favorite climaxes of any song/album. Peace, Chris
Rivers of Nihil is such a special band and I absolutely love them. I'm excited for what they have next for us to experience. people already mentioned more of The Contortionist and I agree with that, they are such a beautiful band as well. But as always i'm still recommending Leprous because they're 10/10. maybe Ne Obliviscaris again too :^)
Great reaction, I love both of these songs. I have to say though my favorite song off that album is The Silent Life. Probably one of the best opening songs to an album I’ve heard in a while. It just comes right at you. I highly recommend it if you do this band again.
Figure it's been long enough it's not spamming to ask again for Thantifaxath's song "Where I End and the Hemlock Begins" It's a fantastic song and I would love to see your reaction and hear your thoughts on the band :3 Having talked with members of the band, they are great folk and deserve some love.
This is one of those songs that I wasn't sure I liked at first, but I couldn't get the chorus out of my head. It just kept haunting me for a few days until I had to go back to it, and exercise it a bit. Now I'm in love with it.
@@ckokomo808 He definitely was not. He wanted to hear how the 1st track transitioned into the second one, and was curious about how the rest of the album sounded.
I was looking forward to this all week! Did not disappoint. I love your analysis. They are a great band and this def was album of the year in 2018. I feel you would love this entire album. Also, how much do I have to pay you to do extremophile elite by between the Buried and me? 😝😎
One of the best albums i've ever heard. Maybe a bit too long, but when you get the time in the right moment to listen to it. It's VERY rewarding. And it's definitely meant to listen as a whole album.
This whole album is pure gold, loved the reaction 👌 Loved how this is called subtle change yet it goes from one gendra to the other with 0 warning haha
I generally don't love the whole tech death thing. I think it took me a few tries to really open up to this band, but this is one of my favorite albums ever now. Also the narrated part from reptile is the dude from Sikth. Pretty sure in this song it's just the lead vocalist. "Fable" by Intervals has something in common with this track. Keeping it spoiler free.
While i am coming into bands such as this from a metal core i do enjoy the expansions into prog and jazz and the like, for more of that i'd recommend exivious (instrumental only), faceless - autotheism or a lot of ihsahns later work
The guy who narrates Reptile is the vocalist for the band Sikth as a guest part. Pretty sure the narrator for this song is the lead vocals of the band.
I think you should give Animals as Leaders another chance. If you want more melodic songs I would recommend anything from their "Joy of Motion" album, for example, Another Year, Nephele, Crescent, The Future That Awaited Me, and Para Mexer
Throwing a name in the hat for a video: been listening to Martin Grech's new album of a heck of a lot, Hush Mortal Core. (Grech did a lot of accompanying vocals for TesseracT, by the way). "Mothflower" is the heaviest of the album, if it's most in line with the channel. "Auras Awol" and others (descending in popularity, lol) veer more into art rock.
The narrator is not the same, but the guy from Reptile is Mikee Goodman, and he has his own band called SikTh. They're insane and a huge influence on Periphery alongside Meshuggah. I'd check out Way Beyond the Fond Old River, Bland Street Bloom, or Philistine Philosophies by them!
This is a band I think has massive potential. They've gotten better on each subsequent album with their last (Where Owl Knows My name) being a really excellent, original, tech/prog DM album. Still, I don't think they've hit their peak and wouldn't quite declare Owl a masterpiece. There's just so much "competition" in this genre out there that standards are really high: Artificial Brain, Horrendous, Xoth, Blood Incantation... Maybe none of the others have sax solos or the "smoother" elements, but the tech/death stuff is similar. Of all these bands, Horrendous is probably my favorite, though they're more traditional DM (very Death/Atheist influenced) than RoN. Still, Idol and Anareta are monster albums. Soothsayer is a good track to check out from them. You're still definitely adjusting to DM. Once you get past the ostensible abrasiveness it's much easier to appreciate musically. FWIW, if you want to check out the origins of where this jazz-influenced metal stuff started, you need to go back to Death, Atheist, and Cynic. These bands are rarely overtly jazzy--no brass, no swing, no improv--but they were influential in expanding metal's vocabularly both harmonically and rhythmically and "opening up" the sound compared to the rigidity of traditional thrash and death metal. Recommendations for each would be: Death - Flattening of Emotions Atheist - Mother Man Cynic - Textures (the most jazz-like of these, and an instrumental)
Got two new ones for you. Try Soen - Covenant and Darkwater - Alive pt. 2 (or Reflections of a mind). Nothing two crazy but I feel like you'd appreciate them
Do yourself a favor, take a dose of your poison of choice, lean back and listen to the whole album. If music is a language, I love everything this album has to say.
Some parts were great. Especially liked the parts with the sax. Generally not a big fan of death metal though, and holy moly do I dislike the super over done bass drums in this. Ruined the song for me.
This band is so great. I was lucky enough to see them play this album front to back on tour. Pronounced like "Nile" as in nihilism. 😊
Also, a reference to the Nile River.
Now I don't have to make this comment. Thank you 😊
I saw them open for Fit For An Autopsy. One of the best shows i ever saw
Yeah, that full album tour was special.
I got to see them play this is full as well and it was fucking awesome, especially with the sax player there

If i'm not mistaken, the bassist is their principal songwriter.
LMFAO "this is not like owls! this is not like owls"
Next Rivers song you check out should be “The Silent Life”. Also for warning, Owls is the outlier for this band. They are more of a death metal band that does all kinds of other stuff.
Oh how this album didn't stick when going into "The Work"

It's a super ugly transition. I remember thinking that iTunes fucked up the track order when I first listened to the album.
I think you would like the band White Ward, jazzy black metal. Try Uncanny Delusions by them
I second that!
Now gonna try them you should try winterhorde
Thanks for revisiting Rivers, really enjoyed. they’re such a great band. If you’re looking for bands similar to them check out track Selves we cannot forgive from band Black crown initiate
I love how the song is called "Subtle Change" but almost none of the changes are actually subtle

You really need to checkout this album as a whole. It's amazing from beginning to end.
This album was the final proof for me that saxaphone is the perfect instrument that fits any mood.
You should give Between the Buried and Me another chance. Selkies, Viridian/White Walls, Swim to the Moon or Extremophile Elite would be great choices
Swim to the moon is so great
More of Myself to Kill!

I really hope you revisit Wilderun! I know you wanted to hear more of them
I think he wants to do an whole album reaction. Sure hope he’ll come around to it.
I feel he was underwhelmed by them. Their newest album was one of my favorites of 2019! Idk what song would be best standalone.
Guessing 1st or last song could leave a mark on their own.
@@ckokomo808 He definitely was not. He wanted to hear how the 1st track transitioned into the second one, and was curious about how the rest of the album sounded.
The guitar solo and the build-up before is probably my favorite moment on the whole album. Awesome song :)
These guys don't disappoint. I do love this whole album.
The immediate transition from WALL OF SOUND chorus into the outro clean part almost makes me cry everytime

Fable by intervals is a great song
Definitely recommend Soen, the song Lotus is one of my favourites
Oscillation, the version with that special video, though.
This band is incredible. The Silent Life is one of the best metal songs this past decade
The narrator in "Reptile" is Mikee from the band Sikth. I don't think Mikee narrated for Rivers of Nihil.
This is my favorite song from the album ngl. You should also check out Hollow, that's also a great song from the album.

I'm coming from the basic metal stuff like maiden, sabbath and Metallica 🤣 but this is pretty fucking awesome
The song intentionally cuts off at the end, its supposed to sound like something the beatles have done
So like Dream Theaters Pull me under. They had the same Inspiration 😉 confused the hell out of me when I didn't know that was on purpose....

Beyond creation Earthborn Evolution the band needs a second chance
I agree
Seconding this.
Or Fundamental Process? Love that song.
Đorđe Gajanin very true but he would probably like Earthborn more because it’s chilled out
Yeet
YES!!! This is my favorite song on the album. Good call
Your Mind is a Helpless Dreamer by Vola. I can't believe this band hasn't been mentioned yet!

Oh, and btw, i think it's pronounced like Nihilism without the -ism or like the river Nile
You should check out black crown initiate. Great band, very interesting musically as well
Hey Brian it’s Bryan here, can you check out more of “The Contortionist”. Check out the song Holomovement. Keep up the reactions
I second that, great song
Maybe something from their older stuff like flourish!
yes!! maybe a song off of exoplanet like flourish!
You should check out silent life. Definitely my favorite song of theirs
Fuck yes my fave song of theirs!
Pretty sure the vocals are all the vocalist and the guitarist layered. Correct me if I'm wrong RUclips peeps
Vocalist, bassist, and drummer. Drummer only does cleans
I suggest Breaking the Broken by Control Denied to reaction. Also love your videos man!
Rivers was touring with a band called Conjurer from the UK. You should check out their song Of Flesh Weaker Than Ash.
if you want some jazzy metal i think that /voivod- obsolete beings/ will be a good recomendation

Rivers of Nihil is always good. Maybe check out Circles in the Sky by them next?
You should check out Vitalisim - "Pagan" pt. I & II
Duuuuude check out "The Meads of Asphodel - Sonderkommando" It is a really unique song.
Please review Allegaeon - "Tsunami and Submergence"
Rivers is sick!
Yessss
YYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAASSS
Selves we cannot forgive - Black Crown Initiate
4:58 section kicks me in the dick
Finally!!!!!!!
The name is just pronounced like the Nile river.
It's basically pronounced like Nile I believe
React to the mercury tree - otoliths
The guys in the band pronounce it "Rivers uh Nile".
Earthborn evolution by beyond creation plz
kinda rush like at points or devin townsend maybe
and supertramp
It's not a nerrator it's the vocalist doing a different style
Mate, you should let the song breath a bit, before commenting.
Brian, this doesn't fit on your channel but check out Phish "My Friend, My Friend" in your off time just for shits and.... giggles
Some parts were great. Especially liked the parts with the sax. Generally not a big fan of death metal though, and holy moly do I dislike the super over done bass drums in this. Ruined the song for me.
sounds like metal isnt the genre for you
It's not over done at all, that's a huge part of the death metal sound. So you probably just won't like any death metal or dm sub genre at all
You've been carbon dated
