The end of his coaching career was sad tbh. I really admired how he picked up AUS team after Sandpaper gate 2018. Some of his achievements:- AUS won ODI series in IND after a decade (3-2) 2019 AUS retained the Ashes in ENG after 20 years (2-2) 2019 AUS won ODI series in ENG in 2020 (Only team to do so since 2015) AUS won T20 WC in 2021 in the UAE AUS retained the Ashes 4-0 in AUS in 2021-22
I recently completed watching both seasons of the web series The Test : New era of Australia's Cricket. I couldn't get enough of listening to Mr. Langer, the wisdom, clarity, passion & eloquency with which he speaks is impeccable. Its absolutely captivating & inspiring to listen & watch him talk not only about cricket but also about leadership, life skills & psychology as all these topics are so close to my heart. Its a pity that he is not on social media I wish I could tell him personally of my respect & admiration for him. Kudos to you for bringing out such a wonderful podcast & giving insight into such candid stories. 😊
Funny story with Justin Langer, I went to watch NSW v Western Australia in Newcastle, I was young, I doubt he was even established at the time, Lee, McGrath, Mark Waugh, some bloody good players were playing and JL was sitting in the stands waiting to bat and a guy was asking him to sign a jersey for "charity", asking JL to get the whole team to sign it, in hindsight I think that pissed him off but I remember going up to him and saying hello and him telling me to "fuck off leave me alone" lol.
JL is one of the smartest coaches and speakers around. Great interview and the honesty was an eye opener. I can relate to what he was saying. Well done…..
Love JL as a player and also as a coach. He has definately been misrepresented and misunderstood in the media since being sacked. Decent man who speaks the truth !!
Great interview. As a Dockers fan, I'm still a big fan of this podcast. Langer is a great speaker but the interview style was spot on. No Old Bull podcast so I'll get my WA sports fix here.
First time I had the privilege of listening to JL was before he played a Test. As a promising Shield player, he spoke to a small group at the Cricket Society at the MCG. He was just as impressive and entertaining, even then.
Wow he talks some sense doesn't he, very amusing too. He was such a determined and fierce competitor - the sort of person I want coaching or playing for our team (and my life if it came to that).
Brilliant....you sense he could have potted plenty more but the absolute class of the man shone through. Thanks JL for your twenty odd years of service, not saying they broke the mould but you sir are an immortal of our great game.
@@jame25O I doubt they’ll ever make a meaningful statement on it tbh. As a pom I was delighted and gutted when he was made Aus head coach, he was exactly what that team needed.
I don't get JL, he mentions how hard social media can be on the mental health of players (and kids) but then also says that being brought up tough and it's the way it should be and players should get on with it. It's a bit of a dichotomy
I can see the point. Toughness and coming through tough situations can give players a tremendous sense of achievement and can be very good for mental health. I would have been interested to hear how he adapted his coaching message to suit individual players' personalities and communication styles. That is a characteristic of all good coaches. Even Barassi knew who to tear strips off and who to encourage softly. I would have liked to have heard that. Social media is appalling with players spending hours on phones reading and responding to texts that are saying how hopeless they are. In a cricketing world with hundreds of millions of fans, the criticism will be neverending. If you trust the coach and have the relationship then strong criticism can be empowering.
Loved this one. Interesting reading an article about the great man today and reading "said in the News Corp interview, with former West Coast premiership player Will Schofield" I didnt know this were part of news corp? Anyhoo, JL has been in and around sports since I was a kid. Gutted to see him get shafted by CA though, as he is a great man, i am sure that whatever he does next will be a success.
Coach Scarborough CC and not only would you be coming home, you could stay at home for 12 months never mind 10!! Great insight.....loves the game....👏👏
Very interesting comments on Cummins and Finch. A concern that grown men that were leaders were too frightened to have a conversation that they considered difficult with JL. What does that say about leadership. Its hard to say whether not having Langer as coach was the reason for the World Cup debacle. But I do think the attitude by Cummins and his back room conspirators indicated comfortableness, the tail wagging the dog, and a boys club. Its not a pursuit of excellence in all areas. These are the factors that will stop the Australian team from growing and succeeding as they should. Of course they'll win games regularly, but they should be near the top in all forms. With respect to JL I would be interesting to hear how he adapts his delivery style and communication based on the player/s he's talking to. All good coaches know how to inspire individual players differently. I think Cricket Australia's response to this today has been particularly poor. They've deliberately misrepresented what he said. Really tacky and dare I say lacking in courage.
The players and Langer and CA had two meetings to discuss the issues, they started 18 months ago. Your boy Langer lied as usual. The best thing to happen in cricket Aus was to get rid of this cheating gnome.
i met justin hes a great guy !! Tubby Taylor lost me because of his comments ! not to mention he never went past Don Bradmans record ! what a goose !!!!!!
Buchanan wasn't sacked. He made it clear that the 2007 ODI World Cup was going to his last mission as coach. Langer never bagged him, but Shane Warne did.
Seen the real JL for the first time. How could they not like him as a coach? he may be very intense and passionate but still dont understand that mutiny and back stabbing !!
Dude was far too micromanaging and abrasive, during the covid bubbles last yr. Cricket coaches usually last around 4yrs, so JL did his time already. Dont blame the players, blame CA for being spineless

Absolute legend JL. I haven't watched a game in any form since he left... Cricket Australia has lost the public as well as a brilliant cricketer and person in Langer. No coincidence at all that performance on the pitch has fallen away considerably since he left. Love ya JL, superstar
He tells a good story, seems to appreciate the fascination and giddy dreams of the cricket fan. Though he is off the mark regarding Ponting….he forgets a certain Drag Queen in Kings Cross

Terrific listen. JL's a bloody good bloke. Far too good for the coddled fuckwits in the team now. He should coach England, why not. Go where you're appreciated mate.
Too far from home. If you know Perth well and the suburbs he lives in, then why would you want to spend so long on the road. Its just a wonderful area in a relaxed and beautiful city with a great lifestyle. Something for everyone.
@@jogreeen I think you've got some of your dates and coaches mixed up. In the series against India we were missing our top 3 batsmen Warner Bancroft and Smith. Langer led the cultural change in which the first two years of the coaching stint sportsmanship and the right culture was seen as more important than winning or losing. The cheating scandal was when Lehman was coach. I'd advise you to see the podcast. In the 90 min interview, he touched on the Australian leadership issues for about 2 minutes max. Watching it puts it into perspective. The press tend to exagerate and blow things out of proportion.
@@jogreeen England never contacted Langer to coach. Langer never made himself available or expressed interest. Being on the road and not in Perth made it difficult when Australian coach. Oh come on. I love JL, have followed him as long as I can remember, but his record as coach of Australia was ordinary at best. I do wonder how many of you have actually even followed the Aussies during this period. Sure they won the Ashes at home, but it was the weakest England team ever (who even lost to the windies). They lost to England in England, they lost to India in Australia, not once but TWICE!!! And the 2nd time it was the weakest Indian team to have ever left India. If i recall correctly the entire Indian bowling lineup had 15 test wickets between them and no Kohli, and that against Starc, Hazelwood, Cummins and Lyons! Totally embarrassing! Their best result was beating Pakistan in Pakistan. If an AFL or soccer coach had that record he would have been booted out.
Aussie cricketers forgot they got caught cheating and this guy with Tim Paine came in and got them on the straight and narrow ... then the sooks start winning and they kick them out cause they're hard arses.... I stand with JL..
