I didn't realize how much was involved with mate, it was cool seeing the people in your video handing the mate to someone while holding the thermos of hot water. It's really pretty in Montevideo and the food looks wonderful!
@@ParisianThinker It is an herbal tea. Drinking mate in many cultures is done for social interaction. Some studies suggest that the tea may have helpful effects on cholesterol, weight loss, the heart, swelling called inflammation and cancer risk. But more research is needed to confirm these links.
@@ParisianThinkerit is a cultural drink, it is like tea for British people, everybody drinks mate here, it was an aborigen ritual, when Europeans colonized this land adopted that drink,, it is like drinking coffee for Turkish or Italian. Great to see more people discovering this beautiful continent! South America has so many places you can visit like Buenos Aires the secret city, Latin America’s hidden gem: Santiago and the Natural Beauty of Curitiba
@@TouristtoLocal Couldn't agree more! I'm from Curitiba is a Brazilian city not many people know about, but it is gorgeous. You should come and take the train to Morretes!!! Trust me, you're gonna love it.
As a half uruguayan/half Braziian I LOVED your videos. Extremely well done, and the two of you have such great chemistry. You managed to ick some of the lesser known places and habits f this small South American country that are not usually seen or explored. Os felicito, y os deseo mucho amor y felicidades en futuros viajes.
I've visited once but only for a few hours. Thanks for making this new itinerary guide of this beautiful city that deserves another visit. Olga was a highlight for me and meandering along the waterfront ramblas.
Just watched the video and noted ALL the tips, thank you. My hubby and I are going to Montevideo in a few weeks and I was struggling a bit to find good recommendations of places to go and a good itinerary. Already subscribed to your channel. 😊
Excellent video. I made notes for when I'm there in November. I'm definitely going to find Olga. BTW, don't worry about offending anyone by saying "soccer". Different languages have different words for the same thing. That's how languages work. You're speaking American English, and the word is "soccer". If someone wants you to use British English, ask them whether they say "biscuit" for what Americans call a "cookie". "Crisps" or "chips"? "Chips" or "fries"? "Lorry" or "truck"? "Bonnet" or "hood"? ""Boot" or "trunk"? Car park" or "parking lot"? And on, and on, and on.
'm an asian and I used to live in Uruguay for 3 years when I was a kid. Your video reminded me of the short but memorable childhood I had there so thank you. Though I met many great people, there were a lot of racism towards asians in particular. I hope things changed as I'm planning to visit there.
We were here in May, and winter was just beginning. It was cold but not miserable. We would have even been fine with just a light sweater since we were moving around so much! But then there were days with rain as well.
Re the healthcare. It sounds great. However, for seniors who wish to emigrate there (including me), there's a catch. Healthcare is provided by co-ops, each of which is affiliated with a hospital. If you're 65 or older, you can't qualify to join one of those co-ops.
I'm planning to visit UY in November by myself for 2-4 weeks. How can I get in touch with locals? Especially given that I only speak German and English?
Beautiful video. I've always wanted to visit the country, since discovering yerba mate. m8 s20 ,,,,,, it's only now that you mentioned it, that I started thinking differently: I too thought that fining people to go and vote was a weird undemocratic thing to do. But, if you think of all the totalitarian regimes the world has been experimenting with (Nazism, Communism, Socialism, Jihadism, Fascism.... to which we're going back...) or if you think back to the Middle Ages... you'll realize democracy (bend and broken, correct) is still the best thing we have. So yes, it is Mandatory to maintain Democracy. There has been no other political current that proved to be better than democracy. So we need to continue to be free (or free-er than others), democratic, and work on improving Democracy. Fine those who deny the importance of democracy ...since they cannot come up with a better solution anyway..
Exactly!! As an uruguayan I've always been told that Democracy is as much an obligation as it is a right. And i completely agree, it is a beautiful thing to go vote and exercise you rights and duty. I really dont understand how could someone would not go vote. Even if you don't like any candidates you can show that by voting blank or annulled. It is important to make your voice and opinions heard. I hope you can visit us soon!!
That's a great question! Where we stayed felt like it would be accommodating. There was an elevator and room to move around in a wheelchair: www.airbnb.com/rooms/1046547165357192350?source_impression_id=p3_1725380928_P3iG0OmC_TwYLDwd As for the sidewalks, we recall there being ramps and didn't find the pavement to be as bad as in other places we've traveled.

As an Uruguayan that lives overseas and have visited many cities and countries around the world, I do agree that Montevideo is definitely under rated.
What a charming place it is. We feel so lucky we got to explore it!
