Know this vid has been out there for a while, but I have been using this as basis for trying this move out and the commentary and advice is spot on. Would say to anyone out there that it takes a lot of intense practice, a half hour of warm up and is a killer on the knees (also looks stupid when you try a sly practice when you think noone is watching you in the office then someone walks round the corner) but if I, the wrong side of 50, can get a half decent cantilever in one season in figure skates, then it must be possible for most of your viewers! Started skating 5 years ago and love learning freestyle moves coz I don't wanna prance around doing competitions like figure skaters are expected to. Thanks for the great advice and giving me a fun goal to work towards.

I watch a lot of tutorials to learn free style. This tutorial is great, the slow mo, different angles, voice over and problems you may have whilst learning, imparts a great learning experience 👍

    Good tutorial.
As you said the prerequisites for the cantilever is to be able to do the eagle. But in addition you need some muscle power which you will gain if you train this trick.
For beginners: It can help if someone else is holding your hand. But don't rely too much on the person to find the balance.

Yeah I agree I dont tell people to hold others because I've seen it can cause them to twist their body and in some cases make it harder to balance but everyones different somethings work great for some and not so well for others we make these as rough guides to kind of break down the movement and give a general overview 😊

@@endeavourfreestylers4675 Yes I see what you mean. If I support someone, I also give additional tips on posture. I also make sure they use my hand only for small corrections.

Blackbird Ice Freestyle yeah I may try that when I see people in person to see if it works for a lot of people could be a time saver when learning it 😊

I wonder do you find you have to tighten your laces more at the top for this one? I find when attempting it that the side of the boot really digs in. For most other things I like to keep it fairly loose at the top.

Actually yeah at 4:41 ...that's gonna be a good video to watch for next time, as you know I dont hardly ever touch the ground on an outside edge stop or a hockey stop to be honest

Thanks so much for this highly anticipated tutorial :) still quite a way off from being able to do it but nevertheless it's awesome to watch! I was just wondering, can you canterlever in both directions? Hopefully see you back in Solihull soon?

I cant only cantilever with one preferred leg usually this is the way I've never heard of anyone being able to do it on both legs just because of the precise balance it requires but it would definitely be fun to try and I'm sure possible for someone to do 😊

Awesome vid.. ! I can do the gibbon and recently started on the eagle and am working on keeping that in a straight line. The talk at the end was helpful as I was also thinking I'm prob not flexible enough to do that but now I feel inspired to try and have no excuses ! Haha :) I'm super chuffed you mentioned the ground touch vid coming 😁 . Seeing ground touch on cornering is the main one for me but to get to it on the stops too would be a great plus. Keep up the great work guys.. if you ever come to Dubai send me a message. We have a couple of full size rinks here.. one is very busy and full of tourists. The other is always almost empty and where I tend to practice.. nobody would stop you from trying any trick. Whenever I move back to the UK (I'm from London originally) would love to catch you guys sometime. Was also very interesting to hear about how some tricks are more prominent in different parts of the UK. Great vid and I'll be watching it again on the weekend when I go skating.. can't wait 👊

Hi! Great vid, hopefully I’m not too late to get a response. I believe I have all the necessary parts for a cantilever (flexibility, strength, spread eagle), but I am repeatedly running across two issue- 1) every time I try to hit the edge, my blades start slipping/wiggling and 2) when I try to lean back, I fall backwards almost immediately. If you have any tips for these issues that would be great!! I’m dying to learn this trick!

I would say make sure your on the inside of the skate with the weight pressed on the heels ie inside your legs from an Eagle position to stop the slipping try and put the weight more on the back foot and to stop the falling back lower your knees closer to the ground first before attempting to lean i hope this helps somewhat and good luck

You wouldn't attribute physical flexbility to an old guy (>50), but I recently learned it with few trials. So, you are completely right, it has nothing to do with flexibility! Rather with ambition, balance and repetition.

my knees can't do it, they are rainbow colored from all the times I couldn't hold the cantilever.
A Tutorial on all the compass variants would be nice
