South Africa from above (physical map)
High places and low places (‘sea level’ and ‘height above sea level’).
Coastal plain, escarpment, plateau (concepts and location of features in South Africa).
Land is measured in meters above sea level, with sea level at 0 meters. High land is often further away from the sea. The highest part of South Africa is in the uKhahlamba - Drakensberg Mountains. This area is over 3300 meters above sea level. Table Mountain in Cape Town is 1068 meters above sea level. Some places in South Africa are low lying at sea level. Other places are above sea level and are higher lying areas. South Africa's landscape can be divided into 3 regions. These are the:
Coastal plains: which are found at sea level along the coast.
Escarpment: which is a mountainous region found between the coastal plain and the plateau.
Plateau: which is the inland area where the land is general flat and high above sea level.
