Heath ledger was so amazing, so brilliant, so revolutionary but mark is just so classic. When i read joker in the comics the voice is always marks. He is so brilliant in such a archetypal way.
Mark Hamill's version of the Joker is pure genius all the way; I remember being completely shocked as a kid, to learn that "Luke Skywalker" was the Clown Prince of Crime.
this is how every voice actor whos not shit looks when doing voices. facial expression is a huge part of the voices you make, as well as actually being INTO the acting.
It's part of the reason its a tragedy he hasn't played an older joker in a movie. Not bashing Nicholson or Ledger's performances, I just would have liked to see Mark pull it off live-action.
Luke Skywalker put him on the map. Joker made him a legend. Mark Hamill, you brought to life one of the sickest villains the world could ever ask for in a way no one else could. Thank you.
Not just the voice, but Mark Hamill's portrayal is the definitive portrayal. He balanced him perfectly between dangerous and whimsical. Jack Nicholson was too whimsical and Heath Ledger was too dangerous.

Awesome 45 True, he was evil in the Arkham games, but this is more of a comparison of what made Hamill famous in the DC cartoons. Hamill will always be remembered for his role in the Batman cartoon. More so than the videogames.
When I found out as a kid that Mark Hamill was the Joker, I then understood that he was much more than a guy on a screen and a true thespian. Age or no, with his voice he brought drama to a show that wanted drama and to entertain children, but his voice and his passion truly brought in more. Only as an adult can I see the difference between Luke and the Joker. As a kid I would never have believed, even if I knew it were true. This is the difference between a actor (Hamill), super star, and a star. Hamill is an actor, and truly one that has done his duty for those who wish to be entertained.

Good for him that he found his place, after all, and with an outstanding voice for the best damn character--hero or villain--in the DC Universe.

Thank you for posting this. This has ALWAYS been my favorite monologue of the Joker (from Batman TAS). Hamill completely captured the essence of the Joker's intellect, maniacal sense, playfulness, and insanity in his eulogy. Like many others, when I found out that Mark Hamill was the voice behind the Joker I was blown away. I have been sold ever since. To me Hamill set the bar for what it means to be the Clown Prince of Crime. Loved him even more in the Arkham Series.
every actor you played the joke had there own version of him. but mark is him. mark created the joker in a way that fit so perfectly that it became joker himself.
+Swagsire I saw that episode on the new Flash. It was great and I love the Star Wars reference where he tells the young guy "I'm your Father". LOL. If you look closely at the actors faces, you can see them smirking. I wonder how many takes they had to do that scene without laughing.
You can just tell he never gets tired of doing. Genuinely such a nice person. Plus he's Luke Skywalker. Mark Hamil Is The definition of "The Man" to nerds. At least to me.
He should have been cast in "The Dark Knight". I've known for years he was the voice behind the Joker on the animated series, but it's one thing to know someone's the voice actor of an animated character and another to actually picture them physically in the roll. Without the make-up on he still becomes Joker not only through his voice but his expression and actions.
I never realized how good a voice actor Mark is? In Star Wars his acting wasn't of this quality, which is a shame because he could have gone on to be fucking huge rather than for the most part being left by the way side. I can't wait to see how he has evolved in SW VII because he has clearly grown into a great actor
+Kevin Cheng if it was any of the robins I think it would be Tim Drake, the one that was turned into a Joker child and became the Joker in Batman Beyond(which Letos Joker looks a lot like)
At this point I think the only chance that would happen is if they did a Batman Beyond movie. Though they'd have to change what happened in Return of the Joker...
Pretty sure a big reason is because a live action Joker would require a certain build and when Hamill got the part, it was considerably after his Star Wars roles, by about 7 or 8 years. Now fast forward that to another decade or two after his Joker is already extremely well-established as the baseline, and he's long since been out of the running to play a slim and trim live action Joker. That's one of my best guesses. I fucking love this man.
***** He was only retired from Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, Christopher Nolan didn't feel comfortable recasting the part after Ledger's death, out of respect. Its also the reason the Joker is never really mentioned throughout The Dark Knight Rises. You can bet the Joker will be back in one of DC's future Batman movies (be that Batman vs. Superman or some other film).
***** I know you read it somewhere, but I don't believe they'll retire the Joker from film forever. He'll be back on film in our lifetimes. He's too popular not to be.
I like Mark Hamill's Joker. I also liked Jack Nicholson's, Heath Ledger's, and John DiMaggio's. All of them managed to pull of that sort of sociopathic clown vibe, as far as I'm concerned.
KazeAizen I wouldn't mind seeing him reprise the role either, but as you might have gathered from my comment, I don't think there's a definitive Joker voice, be it Hamill's or DiMaggio's. I actually kind of like the fact that the character is fairly open to interpretation when it comes to his voice and manner of speaking.
I really hope one day Warner Bros will release the recordings of Tim Curry's Joker voice, very curious on how his take of the character was, lot of people think he sounded like Pennywise when he did his Joker voice but I don't think that's true
Hamill was great as the voice of the joker it was great how in one sentence he can go back and forth between various moods without skipping a beat. it was like he had a split personality and they all wanted to talk at the same time. I was surprised back in the day to learn it was him. he definitely owned the role.
Always entertaining. I remember seeing him at comicon, sometime around 2002 or '03, and he was filming an ending scene to a film where he plays an ersatz superhero. I was excited to be there because it reminded me of a John Ritter movie called Hero At Large. We were all supposed to react to him, as an audience. It was fun because he is who he is, and first and foremost he is a FAN. Thats why his Joker is still the best.
I feel they should have picked kevin michael richardson way before john dimaggio to play anything joker related. i realise richardsons joker is heavily influenced if not stolen directly from mark hamill, but as james hetfield of metallica once said, if your going to steal from somebody make sure you steal from the best
not sure i get you sorry buddy, yeah KMR played the joker in batman. i feel his joker is heavily influenced from mark hammills joker, listening to both side by side its pretty hard to deny. Not sure what hammills reasons were for not returning to the arkham franchise, but even when i read batman comics its hammills voice i hear when the joker is talking
Uh, hetfield didnt originate that quote dude. He was himself saying a very famous quote thats associated with stealing music from other artists. FYI. And it wuld b a lovely irony if he claimed that quote as his, because that stealing that in itself wouldve been an example of that very quote.
I actually think its a mark twain quote, but im not certain about that either. Seeing as there is video evidence in the last 20 years of somebody saying it though i figured id use a reference that people would get.
damn this guy is soo good. many people think he just went away but no; he's the master - and now he is back in movies already with kingsman; hope to see him soon in episode 7
I love how 20 years later he's still so enthusiastic about the role.
I like how the older he gets, the more raspy and worn his joker voice is, it ages like fine wine to me
Coz joker's character has so many iterations in movies and videogames
You do know he is still playing the character right
his life is only successful for 2 reasons, so ofc he'd be
Well after starwars that was the only other real acting gig he had
You can't spell Mark Hamill without arkham.
Holy shit
Holy shit is right!
Woah! Mind blown!
Whoa, cant unsee this!

Well, this is more fun than being asked to do the "NOOOOOOO" scene again and again.
I think that's because he is as much of a fanboy as his fans are, so he gets where they are coming from. Love that man.
Mark Hamill is incredible when you watch him voice act. The facial expressions, the presence he creates.

+Swagsire I saw that episode on the new Flash. It was great and I love the Star Wars reference where he tells the young guy "I'm your Father". LOL. If you look closely at the actors faces, you can see them smirking. I wonder how many takes they had to do that scene without laughing.
+Jennifer Garcia I also loved how in the promos for it they said the next villain is "no joke"
I love Mark Hamill, He's a awesome actor, especially when he did the star wars movies.😎😎😍😍😍❤❤💘💘
Mark Hamill, Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, the three definitive Jokers. God help Jared Leto.
That little hairy hipster don't stand a chance
Dante Mendoza That was people said about Heath Ledger when The Dark Knight hadn't out yet.
Erepyon
oh,then I think he might be just as good joker as heath ledger
hazeman671 Leto might blow expectations as well.
Cesar Romero is best Joker.
Love that nod to Paul Dini that Mark Hamill did at the end there. Paul Dini is such a great writer.
You can just tell he never gets tired of doing. Genuinely such a nice person. Plus he's Luke Skywalker. Mark Hamil Is The definition of "The Man" to nerds. At least to me.
Who ever posted this, thank you. Mark Hamill is such a talented guy and to actually see him perform the Joker is a fan's dream come true.
heathe ledger might of been the face of joker but mark hamill will always be the voice and soul of joker
He's one of the greatest heroes of all time *AND* one of the greatest villains of all time. *A true legend.*
I don't think I've ever been on the edge of my seat watching a youtube video...until now.
Thumbs up for Mark Hamill as Joker in Snyder's Batman v Superman
Yeah, if you want a 60-year old, overweight Luke Skywalker as your Joker.
*****
I'd pay money for that.
The only problem is that he retired from the Joker roles after Arkham City....
brawlerdude555 Yeah now that I read it back to myself, I think I would too.
Or…At least voicing the joker
I am geeking out so hart right now!!! There really is no other choice for 'best Joker voice' IMO.
Just look at how the character takes over when he does this. His face when he is insulting the low level gangster is perfect.
Mark and Kevin will always be Batman and Joker period. Cant be done better.
can the world please appreciate talent while they are here? Mr. Hamill.
Mark Hamill will always be the voice of Joker to me for the rest of my life, Thank you sir.
He's actually quite famous is the voice acting community, I believe.
Did you wish you waited
wow... what a range he's got... brilliant genius!!! thanks for posting this!
If Jared Leto is really Jason Todd or whatever, I hope Mark Hamill gets to play the original aged and retired/imprisoned Prince of Clown.
Damn, that would be awesome!
That's Actually a really great idea!!
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
Between Skywalker and Joker this man made my childhood, and I can't thank him enough for The Killing Joke, I never thought they would make it right.
THE KILLING JOKE ANIMATED MOVIE IS FINALLY HAPPENING DC HAD BETTER CALL KEVIN & MARK!
Of course they will! It will be their final performance as those roles
eiji niizuma I just read that comic.. I don't see what the big deal is. It was really underwhelming, it felt like an episode from a cartoon.
Shane Egan the killing joke is a deconstruction of the relationship between batman & joker
Kevin's Not Done Yet
+qballer82 Well hopefully they can get Mark. He has said he is no longer doing the voice, though he did say he would do it for the Killing Joke.
Absolutely LOVE Mark's Joker, it's just so perfect and the laugh is brilliant
That was some bad ass acting right there... why has he never done live action joker again?
*****
Doubt it.
*****
I know you read it somewhere, but I don't believe they'll retire the Joker from film forever. He'll be back on film in our lifetimes. He's too popular not to be.
***** Heath didn't commit suicide, he overdosed on sleeping pills his doctor gave him.
MARKed as Joker forever
I like Mark Hamill's Joker. I also liked Jack Nicholson's, Heath Ledger's, and John DiMaggio's. All of them managed to pull of that sort of sociopathic clown vibe, as far as I'm concerned.
Since he retired from the Joker I think DiMaggio should be the new one ever since his turn during The Red Hood.
KazeAizen
I wouldn't mind seeing him reprise the role either, but as you might have gathered from my comment, I don't think there's a definitive Joker voice, be it Hamill's or DiMaggio's.
I actually kind of like the fact that the character is fairly open to interpretation when it comes to his voice and manner of speaking.
KazeAizen I vehemently dislike the one in the Red Hood.
KazeAizen yea he was amazing as the joker... sad he never did another part again
Mark's was definitely the best, but Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger were also really good.
Such a wonderful person. National treasure this guy.
I want that eulogy delivered in that voice by that man at my funeral (if I ever plan on dying)
One of the greatest, if not the greatest, the best joker ever.
Out of the four main Jokers (Romero, Nicholson, Hamill, and Ledger), Hamill tops them all. This man is wonderful!
I like the eyebrow raise at 4:05 like "You're damn right."
I really hope one day Warner Bros will release the recordings of Tim Curry's Joker voice, very curious on how his take of the character was, lot of people think he sounded like Pennywise when he did his Joker voice but I don't think that's true
It would be amazing
Very much so. I'd love to hear those recordings as well.
Let's be honest: like many other voice actors, Curry's characters all sound pretty much the same with little variation. ;-P
True, but I have a feeling he changed his voice for the joker
Hamill was great as the voice of the joker it was great how in one sentence he can go back and forth between various moods without skipping a beat. it was like he had a split personality and they all wanted to talk at the same time. I was surprised back in the day to learn it was him. he definitely owned the role.
The student truly became the master.
The ONLY Joker adaptation, as far as I am concerned.
The new guy did his best to keep the Hamil legacy going. It really is great.
Daniel Arevalo who's the new guy?
Nemomeansnoname Troy Baker, he does the Joker in Arkham Origins
I started playing the Batman Arkham series games for Batman, and stayed for Mark Hamill's voice.
I feel they should have picked kevin michael richardson way before john dimaggio to play anything joker related.
i realise richardsons joker is heavily influenced if not stolen directly from mark hamill, but as james hetfield of metallica once said, if your going to steal from somebody make sure you steal from the best
You mean like how KMR played the Joker in The Batman?
not sure i get you sorry buddy, yeah KMR played the joker in batman.
i feel his joker is heavily influenced from mark hammills joker, listening to both side by side its pretty hard to deny.
Not sure what hammills reasons were for not returning to the arkham franchise, but even when i read batman comics its hammills voice i hear when the joker is talking
Luke Curran If I remember right, he stopped because the Joker's voice is very taxing to do for nearly 20 years.
Mark is such a CLASS ACT
Listen how he talks about other actors.
Weird how he plays probably the two most different characters. Both being on opposite sides of the spectrum.
damn this guy is soo good.
many people think he just went away but no; he's the master - and now he is back in movies already with kingsman; hope to see him soon in episode 7
