  • Tan Jia Quan "Tan Family Boxing".
This video features a small selection of the many weapons forms practiced in the 2 adjacent Tan clan villages in Tongan township in Yongtai county.
The Tan family of Yongtai practice various local arts which have evolved over generations to be unique to their villages. Their primary art is Hu Zun Quan with some influences from Long Zun. In addition to Hu Zun the Tan family is known to be one of the main surviving lineages of Niu Fa "Ox Method" boxing (not shown in this video or any public demonstrations that I could find).
The Tan clan has a long history of involvement in the military going back millennia to Tan Daoji famed strategist and feared general of the Northern and Southern Kingdoms period.
The Yongtai branch of the Tan clan trace their origins back to Ming dynasty general Tan Mande who moved his family from Hebei to Fujian. His son Tan Jizong was known for his martial skills and was appointed to the feared Jin Yi Wei imperial secret police. Tan Jizong's grandson Tan Xingzu passed the provincial martial exams. At that time in the early 16th century Fujian was having trouble with attacks from pirates. So Tan Xingzu helped by recruiting local troops and leading them to fight against the pirates. Later because of his efforts in organizing the local military and militias to fight he was given a sign with the words "righteous official" engraved upon it by the emperor.
The Tan family of Yongtai today traces their martial lineage back to Tan Xingzu claiming that the Ming dynasty military empty hand and weapon skills he taught were passed on in the family and that later they were mixed with local boxing methods that were absorbed into the village over the centuries.
Today Tan family martial arts are still practiced in two neighboring Tan clan villages in Tongan township.
Their martial arts contain a large number of boxing sets, the main focus being tiger boxing but the Tan family also preserve a lineage of Niu Fa "Ox Method Boxing"as well as some other forms. In addition various traditional strength training methods and skills are practiced as well as a range of traditional weapons.
