How Purity Culture Led to Murder: Atlanta Spa Shootings

  • The man who committed the murders in Atlanta is 1000% responsible for his own actions. With that being said, I think its vital to look at factors that contributed to this atrocious situation. The man cited "eliminating temptation" as a reason for his crime - so lets look at purity culture & the lie of temptation.

    I actually heard a piece of a sermon where the preacher said that married womens' bodies belong to their husbands. Um, no! Everyone's body, married or not belongs to them alone. No one else. That's just wrong .

    • @cbair2272
      @cbair2272 3 года назад +7

      Ye in Paul's letter to the Ephesians it says “Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Saviour”. Even more scary is someone tried to use this as a defence in a rape case he thankfully is doing 5 to 10 years as the court said and I paraphrase here “that is just crazy”.

      I mean, I suppose that since our society isn’t used to nudity outside of sexual contexts, it makes sense that there may be people who who would see something like nude sleeping as being sexual. To that, I say there’s nothing inherently wrong with something being sexual, but also that nudity itself is only as sexual as society decides it is, and that nudity therefore is not sexual by any objective standard.

      Well, at the very least, I’d like to see religion become something people just personally follow, believe in, and so on without it negatively affecting how they treat those who disagree with them politically and socially. Unfortunately, that’s probably going to be difficult for many religious people.

    It's bad enough that we do next to nothing to encourage young people to grow as well balanced human beings .But dominant forces in our culture re-enforce racism and sexism as well as downright neglect .

      Yes, and I would also point out that gay men and lesbian women are around people of their own gender in states of undress in locker rooms and such, and even most of the conservative religions acknowledge that some are natural tempted by people of their own gender. Therefore, they should also be arguing that gay and lesbian people should only be around the opposite gender in states of undress, since they only tempted by their own gender.

I automatically feel angry whenever anybody brings up the shooter's reasoning, because it feels like they're making excuses for him, like the cop who said, "he was having a bad day". The way you talked about this helped me step out of that frustration and take an honest look at a very real part of the equation.

      I agree that purity culture was an aspect and I respectfully disagree. The reason being in listening to the various people from the AAPI communities, from my understanding alongside the need to appropriately call the actions a hate crime, this person could’ve chosen other places that would be considered to some “temptations” but the killer did not. Specifically the man who did this choose and drove distances to be in spas where Asian women worked, and targeted them. As I’m not part of the AAPI community myself, I don’t want to explain anything that I don’t have a full understanding to when it comes to being a minority I just wanted to share my thoughts. I hope they came across as how I intended.

    The most extreme thing I had ever done was force myself to take ice cold showers. I thought I was being extreme.
    Then I heard of a man who had entered an adult bookstore with the intention of seeing a peep show or something, and ended up having a mental crisis about it and set the place on fire, I remember as much as I knew it was unhinged and how the hell could he let it get to that point, I could also dimly realize that a person could just go totally lone wolf in their thought process by taking these teachings to heart. I mean if this guy had sought counseling, I can picture the guy just thinking the counselor was the world or devil trying to lead him away from God. Scary but I can see how it could happen that way.

    I think the most heartbreaking part of this whole thing has been to see the way that law enforcement and the media has used that motive almost as a way to excuse his actions. I'm so so tired of watching murderers and rapists be excused for their actions.
    I learned last night that the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that being drunk or under the influence of drugs does not warrant a lack of ability to consent. Which means it's now perfectly legal to take advantage of drunk people and rape them.
    I literally just sobbed. I don't live in Minnesota but just the fact that this is happening anywhere breaks me. It feels like we're moving backwards.

    "Follow the breadcrumbs" to see how someone could come to the conclusion that it's okay to harm others? Yeah, I wasn't raised quite so hardcore in the purity culture, but it was there. Let me tell you, the same groups that teach this kind of thing also lean HARD into the "our God is a wrathful God!" mindset too. If bad things keep happening to you, maybe you're a sinful person. So yes, there's a very clear and logical (to them) process to which a person like this guy could make the leap that he had to do what he did.
    Something else that I find particularly disgusting is that, apparently, the police also took to investigating the massage parlor(s) he shot up to find out if they were offering other services, which those establishments can be known for. As someone who's fought through a puritanical upbringing and seen pretty up close how destructive such teachings can be, I've changed my views on the subject of prostitution completely. I'm 1000% (yes, thousand) pro-legalization of the "oldest profession". I mean think about that label, for a moment. Prostitution has been around for a VERY long time. It is, to me, the epitome of a victimless crime. So for the police to respond to this by, for one thing, assuming that any of the victims committed a crime themselves that may have "provoked" this response is disgusting. It really does not matter whether or not any of the places he targeted offered "happy endings".

    Yeah, this is the main type of thing that bothers me about the concept of purity. Granted, I have interact with some good people who personally believe in purity and ego say that think it would be best for others, especially fellow believers, to abide by that. I really don’t care about that, so long as they don’t force it on other people. But in general, I feel that purity culture, when taken to its most extreme, can lead people to resentment, becoming incels, and other really bad things.
