In 1.4 instead of there being predefined fonts the fonts are just what are on your computer. Windows doesn't allow websites to access the fonts folder so they had to create their own fonts when moving online. (I know they could just use fonts from Google Fonts like Pixlr does but that would sort of contradict their own rules)
Websites can "technically" access the fonts on the user's computer (fonts that aren't custom instead use a font that is installed), but I don't think they can list them,

I dont know if you forgot or something, but scratch 3.0 actually does have tutorials. You go to the ideas page, and then you can pick a tutorial, and it opens up a new project so you can make it. You can even add extra things on your own, like different movement, your own sprites, etc. :)

I made an animation with 1.4 a few weeks ago. I have massive rrspect for all scratchers back then, because drawing in that was DIFFICULT!! BTW, that's not the oldest version of Scratch. There are earlier ones archived on the wiki. :D-]
