- Rare footage of the composer Sergei Prokofiev playing his own music and being interviewed about the activities he was engaged with at the time.
The Russian translates thus:
Prokofiev is being asked: "Sergei Sergeevich, maybe you will tell our viewers about your work?"
He replies: "Well, right now I am working on a symphonic suite of waltzes, which will include three waltzes from Cinderella, two waltzes from the War and Peace, and one waltz from the movie score "Lermontov." [The War and Peace] has just been brilliantly produced in Leningrad, where the composer Cheshko (?) made an especially noteworthy appearance as a tenor, giving a superb performance in the role of Pierre Bezukhoff. Besides this suite, I am working on a sonata for violin and piano [no.1 in f minor], upon completion of which I will resume work on the sixth symphony, which I had started last year. I have just completed three suites from the Cinderella ballet and I am now turning the score over to copyists for writing the parts, so that most likely the suites will already be performed at the beginning of the fall season."
Wish I could see more real videos of composers like that
my favorite composer
Mine too. I find his music highly addictive, much more than any other composer.
@@pljms totally! I´ve been addicted to his music for a few years already.
(Translation for English-speaking admirers of Prokofiev):
- Sergey Sergeevich, can you tell our audience about Your work?
- Well, I'm working on a Symphony Suite that will include three waltzes from Cinderella, two waltzes from War and peace, and one waltz from film Lermontov. Now with great brilliance put in Leningrad [War and peace], and especially distinguished composer Chizhko, who acted as a tenor and perfectly performed by Pierre Bezukhov. In addition to this Suite, I am writing a Sonata for violin and piano, and at the end of it I will work on the Sixth Symphony, which I started last year. I've just finished three suites from the ballet Cinderella, and I'm giving their in publishing to write of the parts, so they'll probably be playing at the beginning of the fall season.
Thank you friend
Thanks so much!
very helpful. thanks. =D
This was filmed on the porch of Prokofiev's country house at Nikolina Gora, 30 miles west of Moscow, which he bought in the Summer of 1946. He was enjoying temporary recovery from a long health crisis (chronic hypertension and injuries in a fall) and would soon relapse, but he looks and sounds good here. Priceless clip. Thanks so much for the post!
This is a lost gem and incredibly rare. Just how many interviews are there left of last century's greats surreal
Priceless stuff. He was such a unique composer who's melodic and harmonic character is identifiable after just a few bars.
A bit of trivia : Both Prokofiev and Joseph Stalin died on the very same day, 5 March 1953.
A bit more trivia. Because of the above circumstance, no flowers were available for Prokofiev's funeral!
The news of Prokofiev passing was delayed several days so as not to diminish in any way the enormous grief of the Russian people on account of great Stalin's death...
Nothing trivial about that. All knowledge is precious whether it serves the slightest use to anyone. A. E Houseman.
Trivia: I care more about Prokofiev's death than Stalin's.....
another fun fact: shostakovich chose to attend prokofiev's funeral instead of stalins, and admitted that prokofiev was one of the best colleagues hes ever had.
The camera man asks "Sergey Sergeyewich, can you please tell our viewers, what are you working on?" The genius himself said that he is working on a symphonic suit Waltz that will contain of 3 waltzes from Cinderella, 2 waltzes from War and Piece and one from the movie Lermont! "Simultaneously I'm also working on a sonata for violin and piano and the 6. Symphony that I've started last year! The three suites from Cinderella, I gave already to the publisher and will be played in the following season"!
Love this incredible video!
Thank you Tonko, you have lightened our darkness.
I like his chair
okay, new favorite video...
woooooow this is SOOOOO cool!
Fascinating. I’m listening to a lot of Prokofiev’s music at the moment, and re-reading a biography of his Soviet years, - indeed I've just reached a section on his country house, so it’s wonderful to see this room and to hear his voice.
OMG! It is cruel to post such a precious video like this without any subtitles in english, or french or italian or spanish (because they are most known languages). Please, someone do some translation :)
I like russian but, hélas, I dont understand nothing of it :(
Anyway, thank you for posting this video. At least we can hear him playing the piano, the sound of his voice and his demeanor :)
Um, this is a Russian video, and it is ridiculous to expect the Russians to cater to a Western audience 🙄
@Stuart de Ocampo He was one of the best composers on the entire world, not just in Russia. International audiences are also interested to know what he is saying.
What a delight and privilege to see and hear this footage! Watching this is instructive. I love his music. Spaceebo bolshoye!
I did not expect his voice to sound like that.
Maybe because in this video, Prokofiev is already a middle aged man
I love this very much. Thank you!
OH!!! I just have read the description of the video!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
:)
wonderful composer!
My Russian is good enough to know that Prokofiev (pretty much as indicated) is going through a list of compositions and performances. The interest in hearing this is mainly what this says about him as a person: very organized. He speaks briskly, yet clearly, so he sounds well-educated (not surprising). I wonder whether there's a touch of southern accent, since he was born in what's now eastern Ukraine--though I didn't hear a Ukrainian "h" in place of a Russian "g."
Chris Lovett modern Eastern Ukraine was and is primarily Russian, as evidenced by the civil war there
To my ear, his accent is rather an accent of that time than a southern accent. The way he speaks reminds me of TV and radio voices of that time. And I also adore his organized and clear speech. Such a genius.
Prokofiev speaks very clear Russian. You nothing knows about accents.
I've listened to his music all my life - and played some of it - but this is the first time I heard his voice. Thanks for upload
This is incredible video, just difficult to believe.. After 56 years since his death..
It's a waltz, sometimes called "Since we met", from his opera 'War and Peace'.
wonderful! Thank you
Very interesting video!
Thanks for posting!
the way he gets up and turns is so funny. like doing an about face
thank you for sharing this treasure
Thanks for the info.
Sería bueno traducirlo..... muchas gracias!
I remember this! Yeah)
How come these old pianos sound all the same? Mine 1860 Grand Square is not far from this one. What a great video ... there is nothing like to see a person moving and talking and playing piano. Thank you
I'm wondering also, it sounds really nice.
I love this. Love love love.
I got that he was working the 6th Symphony, which makes this clip even more precious because it precedes the postwar censorship sweep, which. arguably, spiritually damaged (if that is the word) Prokofiev as a composer. This is a true "last days" video.
I DO LIKE PROKOFIEV'S CONCERTO #2 .
il più grande compositore del 900!!
turn on subtitles, click the settings button, click Subtitles/CC then auto-translate, than pick your language
you can thank me later
grand génie ♥ ♥ ♥
the cheshko he talks about is Oles' Semyenovich Chishko
It would be fantastic if someone would translate this with English or French subtitles. ;-) Id love to know what he was asked and replied.
GREAT !!!! Does anyone know if other video exist ??
I would like to understand what he said : Is there a voluntary to translate what he said?
I love to see him smash that piano. :D
I'd respond to Prokofiev: "Call me when you find out the date for that Concert premiere for the Cinderella suites! I gotta hear that!!"
0:00 what was he playing?

Does anybody know, just by watching, what he is playing in the silent video at the end?
4th mvmt of his 4th piano sonata (sorry for waiting 11years :'))
I NEED TRANSLATION
Its somewhere in the comments!
It's actually the second part of scene 4..
And what about Rachmaninov ? Is there also recorded interview from him ?
big boat i really don't know if you are going to see this. There is a video that talks about his music, you can search on youtube, Rachmaninoff voice
Suiti !
What year is this?
Judging from what he says about his activities, I'd say 1946.
@4thMG They suppose... no one knows for sure, but I bet one could figure out exactly if they analyze the exact keys he's hitting.
I have some great footage of Mozart, I didn't even realise that he was an American.
if anyone can translate that would be amazing !
read the comment of this video!

Shostakovich casually glanced away...
wanted to see how prokofiev really looked
Anyone knows whats he playing at the beggining????
At what year this vedio was shot !
could sbdy add subtitles?
@M3town3 no.
ummm... the year please?! wouldnt this be the most important piece of info
What? Is that really him???😱😱
The Russians are shunned for being so good at everything, aren't they?
Uh, say what??
How could it be that no one sat him down in front of a microphone to record his sonatas. The technology certainly existed in the 40s. Perhaps that's another price paid for his return to Russia.
He did record a movement from his 4th Sonata, which is available on an Naxos or Pearl CD, along with his other recordings.
1:42 did he say bly*d ??😂😂
Russia used to be amazing...
He was a jerk
