In this video Heimler walks you through what you need to know about the Declaration of Independence for AP Government. This document, written by Thomas Jefferson (with editorial help from John Adams and Benjamin Franklin), officially declared America's independence from Britain. In doing so, Jefferson made plain the Enlightenment sources from which he drew, especially natural rights theory, popular sovereignty, and the social contract.

AP U.S. History was the best AP class so far (I've taken HuG, Euro, Lit, Lang, and Physics)! I loved it so much. Once you get into it, you succeed. At first, it seemed boring until I thought about how it applied to my life. I started at a 2 on a practice exam, but ultimately scored a 5.

@@tiktokshorts123.8 About 500 years of history are taught in mostly one country. It's not much, but you can go into a beautiful amount of detail and learn so much more than just the surface level curriculum for most European history classes will teach.
Since you clearly love European history, think of it like this: A true US history course will cover the same amount of time (about 500 years) with the same depth as a course teaching about the republican period of Rome (about 500 years). When it's put like that, it suddenly seems more attractive, right?

@@sakaue Lol I never said I was interested in European history. But if we do consider that, then Europe has gone through a lot of things, whether it was their ancient civilizations or their modern history it is for a fact more than America's history, and I'm not trying to offend you by saying that but that's just the truth.

Can you do a video on Fredrick Douglas? I find his story very interesting in that he felt the vicious racism of his time, but still saw the Declaration of Independence as a “glorious liberty document’. Many people try to discredit the Declaration of Independence by saying that there were slaves and thus delegitimizing the good nature of the Declaration of Independence, but Douglas (a once slave) saw the document, and for that matter America, as a path to freedom and equality. He saw the Declaration of Independence as a framework to someday live up to, even if it’s written ideals are not being met today.

John Locke was an academic. He wrote and thought. Thomas Jefferson was a patriot that risked his life and his fortune to start a new nation. He DID something. He acted. He helped form the great nation we now enjoy. It's easy to be a thinker and an idea person. It's hard to actually do something. To actually build something like a new nation.

You can believe what you decide is right or wrong. Ask yourself one question. Why did these people come to a land unknown, maybe the Magna Carta, might explain the acts that people had back in that day in time. What happened the day three ships sailed away was the venture and beginning of Assumingly a betterment in life, liberty, and freedom from a King's greed. Consent of the governed is impossible... those who require rulers are not qualified to choose them for themselves let alone others... David Hume in Of the Original Contract had an interesting analogy about being taken aboard a ship while asleep and forced to be under the dominion of the captain or leap into the ocean to die... The founders had no just authority to contract with the unborn let alone anyone who did not sign the document...

What I don't understand is why he didn't go until the full story of what the declaration of the independence actually did! All that stuff that you're talking about the natural law natural rights is what is known as a republic and that's the only thing that government is licensed to do which is to protect your rights meaning that you cannot be held in a court of law for a trial unless you have a natural citizen as your accuser. A police officer or a government employee is not your accuser. The government employee has only one interest which is to do what: to make sure that Justice is being brought in the name of a citizen and not a corporate or government employee. Black's law dictionary specifically says that a republic the exercise of the natural law. And the great thing about that is where we need to start and rebuilding the Republic. The declaration of Independence seceded from England and established Republicans out of colonies and mandated that these Republicans be true republics as in Plato's Republic solon's Republic and the first practice of republic which was Athens. Christian natural law was perfected by Saint Thomas Aquinas in his book summa theologica. But it had been written about by Saint Anne in Saint Barbara as well as Averroes or ibn Rushd.
