Michael J. Fox Reflects On His Life With Parkinson's Disease

  • When Academy-Award winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim set out to make Still, a film about Michael J. Fox, he imagined he’d be making a hybrid documentary/80s movie. What he discovered along the way, however, was something deeper: his subject is far more than an iconic mega-star - Michael is an inspiration. After decades of living with the degenerative and debilitating effects of Parkinson’s disease, Michael J. Fox reveals his personal philosophy: “With gratitude, optimism is sustainable.” Katie’s conversation with Michael and Davis is funny and revealing, and traces the highs and lows of creating a film about an incurable optimist trying to overcome an incurable disease.

But my beautiful wife, the love of my life has been there the whole time and never even thought of leaving. Even sometimes now having to push me in a wheelchair. It embarrasses me but never even phases her. I thank God for her every day. My grandkids also light up my life. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I wish you well. I’m just curious, if you don’t my asking…do you or your wife have any sort of ideas or guesses as to what might’ve caused your Parkinson’s? When I look at famous cases such as Muhammad Ali and Pope John Paul II, I can’t help but wonder if acute head injuries could be a cause. Muhammad Ali (as a boxer) obviously took a few blows to the head during his career, and John Paul (who was a skier and ice skater during his younger years) probably suffered falls. Michael J Fox (for his part) did a lot of his own stunt work in films (notably BTTF) which involved head injuries. He was even knocked unconscious in BTTF 3 while filming the scene where Biff hangs him by a rope.
      Anyways, sorry to bother you with this. I know it may seem like a trivial question, but I feel like if we’re ever going to find a cure for Parkinson’s, the key may lie in knowing the causes.

    • @BiornBear
      @BiornBear Год назад +5

      @@sean2015 It’s called CRE “chronic traumatic encephalopathy”, and yes my doctor thinks I have it. I played football and wrestled for years. It’s accumulated over many hit to the head. The only way they can really tell is by examining your brain after death. Many physical sports have severe cases of it. The NFL had several lawsuits by former players who can’t remember and have lot’s of mood swings. Mine is producing dementia, I’m in the early stages. But that’s not to say people can’t get it without head injuries but that can play a huge factor. They scan your brain for the area that produces dopamine and can tell if it I not producing enough, but it’s anyones guess what causes each individual case.
      And don’t worry about asking, I don’t mind. I want as many people to know about it as is possible. The more who know the more we can fight it. I have already promised my brain for science when I die and belong to the Michael J Fox foundation and go to Maryland from Georgia a lot and participate in trials. Thank you for asking. Let me know if you want to know more.

    Michael and Tracy are both an example of love and committment within marriage, it is hard for both of them for what Michael is going through. I respect Michael for his strength in fighting this, when many other men would have given up and taken a different route. Having a wife like Tracy provides that emotional support and security within oneself that allows a man to face each day to battle through. They are a fine example to their children, whom I am sure are proud of both of them. Michael shows that the size of a man is irrelevant, it is the size of his heart that counts. All men have their faults, but it is how you face your battles that measures the man and Michael measures up well and should be proud that he is a fine example of a man, father and husband: never give up, fight with every ounce of strength despite the odds and pain, ensure you dont just take but give back, to fill the emotional needs of your family, have a sense of humour and most importantly be an example to your children on how to face lifes challenges. In this day and age it is inspiring to see a couple with such strength and loyaly to each other and their family. Michael and Tracy are an inspiration to others, I wish them all the best.

It allows those who live through similar health issues realize that we are ALL a part of the human condition. No one is exempt. I understand that Bruce Willis' family wants to be left alone, but he is also a person that is so well-known for iconic movies everyone has seen...his condition could, like Michael's, bring people to acknowledge that it isn't odd or unusual for families all across the United States (and elsewhere) to be living in/with similar circumstance. Again, connecting us to the human condition...
