For all the folks disappointed by not demonstrating how to hook the shifter/cable up to the derailleur, I made a video on how to do it here: ruclips.net/video/cCxzwxp_1sw/видео.htmlsi=5ivhiO8WA2HcsDPL
Thanks for the heads up. This dudes talking about grips and brakes…. I want to get straight to the job. RUclips for ya. I’ll work it out for myself now.
Agreed. I was wondering what gear I should have the shifter set to when I tighten the cable. Lowest setting? In the middle? That is what I was watching for but this was not addressed.
You're welcome! This winter may be a struggle for lots of folks, but we just gotta keep plugging along. Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback, I appreciate it!
How come nobody shows how to thread the cable back to the derailleur? The shift lever comes with a bare cable. You don’t run the bare cable back to the derailleur, do you?
My thoughts exactly, a 7 year old could figure out how to actually swap out the old shifter with the new one, my question is; can I somehow reuse the old cable that's already attached to my bike or do I have to use the bare cable that came attached to the new shifter? Seems like much less work to just connect the old cable already on the bike to the new shifter.
@@RandyBachmeier it's very simple. Loosen the attachment screw that holds the cable on the derailleur, take the old shifter off the handle bar and just pull it out of the bike by the shifter. Then just attach the new shifter and snake the new cable back down to the derailleur and tighten the locking screw.
I got really confused when you kept saying levver, until I realised you meant lever. You didn't show how to connect to the gears or how to set the tension
Hello, today somebody broke my new cycle's gear shifters and i want to replace them there are bicycle shops nearby but they are very bad at it my question is can i change the gear shifter without taking out the cable from the drealuer cuz i dont want to tune the drailear. please reply
Oh my god man I was trying to clean it and then a very small spring popped of now i dont have a clue how to get it back together on believable now i have to buy a replacement sigh...
wow, okay well, I just purchased that Shimano Altus shifter. I didn't know the gear indicator window went under the brake lever (my current one goes above the brake lever), also how the hell are you supposed to downshift do you reach in between the brake lever and handle bar to hit the downshift lever? If that's how it operates then I'm definitely going to return it and get something else because that's just stupid, with my current shifter you use your thumb to upshift and down shift and I like it that way.
@@beno9966 yeah I kept my altus for about a month then went with a whole new groupset and switched over to a Box 4. I've been running that now for 2-3 months and I really like it. It's got nice smooth solid shifting.

Sir, i have the same shifter, and likely to change that too. So I see that old rear derailluer doesnt have any effect to the new shifter as long match with same shifter speed right? (In this case 7 speed) Im afraid if I bought the item already and cannot be used. Thank You in advance.
6,7,and 8 speed Shimano shifters and derailleurs all have the same pull ratio, so ideally the shifter needs to match the cassette. If the shifter is, lets say an 8 speed, but your cassette or freewheel is only 7 speed, it will still work, you'll just have 1 extra click on the shifter that won't do anything. The derailleur will work with whatever. Just make sure the limits are set to the cassette.
Thank you for the information. My rear derailleur, can shift from small cog to larger easily (cable pull) But when shifting from larger cogs to smaller it stuck on 4 to 5 cogs. Can I consider my RD has already not function well? Ive already adjust the alligment the high / low limit and cable tension from cable clamp.
The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.
I’m in the process of installing a 7 speed trigger shifter on my son’s bike to replace the twist one. Can I re-route the new cable back into the old cable housing or do I need to get new housing? Thanks for sharing the video.
I have a mongoose remix 20 inch and the grub screw won’t turn I got the shifter cover off and the grip I just can’t shift with this black thing that stayed on. I don’t know how to get it off. What do you suggest doing?
If you're trying to remove an old grip shifter and you don't want to save it, I'd probably just cut the plastic and the aluminum clamp piece that the grub screw threads into with a hacksaw or a cut off wheel on an angle grinder. Just cut straight down on it. You probably won't have to go all the way through the clamp, just most of the way. If it's pretty tight it will usually pop apart when you get close to going all the way through. Be carful not to cut into the handlebar, and good luck!
@@JoeyMesa I was just asking because in this video you said you would show a repair on the original shifter at a later time. At the time I seen this video I was searching for a how to.....I eventually figured it out through trial and error. Thanks for taking the time to reply
Man I just spent 3 hours on this and ultimately destroyed my shifter because the cable somehow folded over itself inside damaging components. DO NOT REMOVE COVER. There is an access screw at the end to feed the cable through. If you can’t access the cable you need to shift the levers until its in the correct position to be fed out. ABSOLUTELY NO NEED TO REMOVE COVER. Learned the hard way.
I've got a video I'm working on right now showing how to do it. Should be complete by the end of the weekend, but I'll share a link here when I'm finished.
Thank you!!! Meanwhile I’ve had a dangerous fall from my bike after my broken 1-3 gears shifted from 3;7 to 0:7 (chain came off), lost control of the bike, big phat bump on the head. I need to get this sorted ASAP hahah
I have a question... what should I do to fix my shimano shifter on my trek marlin 5. The gears shift, but the thing that shows what gear I am in is stuck under 1. What should I do
It depends on the shifter, but either the peg that is part of the indicator needle has come out of the ratchet ring or is broken. If it just came out, it’s not too difficult to get it back in place on most shifters, but again, it depends on the model because some are much different.
Igen, így felszerelheti az váltót, de nem vagyok biztos abban, hogy a sebességváltó kijelzője megtisztítja a fékkart. Elsősorban úgy állítottam be, hogy megfeleljen az eredeti váltó helyzetének. Köszönjük a visszajelzését!
Maybe. It depends on how beat up the old cables are. Most new Shimano shifters come with new inner cables, so there's really no reason not to use those at least. If all the cables are pretty new and the inner wire is not damaged or frayed, you can definitely reuse them.
This particular shifter is the Shimano SL-M310-7R. I don't know how accessible this shifter would be to get ahold of due to a huge global bicycle/parts shortage. There is an 8 speed version that would work in a pinch - same pull ratio - just has 1 extra click or shift position that you wouldn't use. amzn.to/2Mm9gjN

No, the pull ratio is different from shimano to sram
