I have a beat up, 25 year old. 4x4 Toyota truck and I love working on it. 350,000 miles on it and it's still crankin' every time. And the messier the job the more fun I have and it's super zen. I daily drive it and go beat it up on trails in the mountains. Passed a Tesla today with a personalized license plate that said "Pyur Joy" and I just said "I get way more joy out of this clapped out, POS, hands down. I get smiles per gallon." to myself.
I’ve milled over getting a new truck a few different times, but seeing the problems associated with them, and the added maintenance costs and car payment, I always come back to keeping my 2008 Ranger. She needs some general things like the valve cover gaskets and replace the slowly dying AC compressor, but still better than having to replace a water pump at 60k or having a module that shits the bed. 115 and change on her, and she can easily go another ten years. 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for explaining. My regular car is 1999 F250 SD 7.3 364,000 miles rusty old truck. Just spent $10,000 lots more stuff to fix New truck 100,000+ Probably won’t make it to 364k before it breaks. Second car Scion xB 2006 180,000 miles spent 3,000 over the past three years fixing stuff New car 46,0000 Probably won’t make it to 180k Maintenance doesn’t cost it pay$!
If someone up North neglects basic mechanical maintenance, it's almost guaranteed they don't keep their undercarriage washed. I wouldn't put money in a rust bucket either. A trip to Phoenix to buy a used car is still cheaper than a new car.
I find the argument as very logical. The catch is, few people will hear the argument, and most people aren't very logical. Plus, look at how many billions the car companies spend on marketing/propagandizing the general public.
I got a jalopie ass 2011 hyundai sonata with over 200k miles. Bought it used for 10k 7 years ago when it had 80k miles on it. Not including stuff like brakes and tires and oil, the stuff you need anyway, not including that I've probably put about $500 into it.
A mini Cooper is a very low riding sporty car that is probably hard to work on. SUV's are bigger money pits than a front wheel drive sedan with a proven track record. New tech is less reliable than older systems. Smart people pay cash and do regular maintenance.
Comes down to people don’t want to be bothered maintaining & keeping up w/ their car. Most people don’t understand much on maintenance & scared it’s going to need some expensive work so they would rather have over expensive new car than deal w/ “hassle” of being on top of maintenance. They don’t want to learn how to handle it. Same people will trade their car in & lose thousands vs selling it themselves. Too much trouble.🙄🤦
Yes. She will be pouring more money into the Mini for maintenance than the old car never mind full coverage insurance, personal property tax, and major depreciation. She is literally lighting money on fire.
I drive my beaters till they die when I'm done a car it is done.... I paid $800 for a 01 taurus wagon lasted 8yrs... I paid $50 for a 98 escort still got it 350k on the clock! And I have a spare engine and transmission for it waiting in the wings....got a 2000 fusion with bad rear k member $200 it's in the cue for repair.. And I got a 97 Toyota Corolla for free got it up and running for less than $500 and I drive it all the time...when I'm not driving my vintage mopars.... Hell no I don't want or need a new modern turd with all the bullcrap they have.... But I don't mind fixing them to make a buck! 😂😂😂.... Got a heater core job on a 18 Ram 2500..yep $$$$.. You can keep the car payment on the modern turd!
I happily spend 500 in a year on repairs rather than 500 a month for a car payment
@@ranger178 make sense to me
500/year on repairs is cheap on repairs. What did you buy it new?

Buying a new truck is basically signing up for a paid automotive research program to find out how many moving parts before it's a dumb idea.

I grew up in the rust belt. God I hope I never have to go back. The frame on my 12 year-old Toyota almost looks like it came off the line yesterday.
Synthetic oil isn't any more if you change your own oil.

Wow. Thanks for sharing. You couldn’t pay me to take a Minicooper. It’s crap. Only a Fiat is worse I believe.
