I have a new colony of critically endangered animals that have literally appeared out of nowhere! My pet Gooty sapphire tarantula (Poecilotheria metallica) mysteriously laid an egg sac a couple months ago in her terrarium, but to the best of my knowledge she hadn't mated. I was told it might be a 'phantom' egg sac, full of unfertilized eggs that she would eventually eat, but low and behold, the egg sac ended up hatching some 20-30 spiderlings! This birth event was special because the species is both critically endangered in the wild and reportedly communal!
In this episode, we meet our new colony of sapphire tarantulas, watch them feed, and discuss what we should do with them to help save them from extinction and possibly learn about keeping tarantulas in colonies. I think it would be cool if you raised some communally and some separately. We could see if it affected their behavior and feeding lifestyles. Ther would also be no risk of you losing your *critically* endangered tarantula if the spiders turned on each other. Just a thought.

My own tarantula also produced an eggsac seemingly out of nowhere at one point. I did some research and it turns out female tarantulas can store the sperm of a male in their body for a very long time until they feel comfortable enough to inseminate their eggs and produce an eggsac. She must love the home you made for her since she feels comfortable enough to lay eggs, good job!

I think there’s a couple options, you could move half of the babies into another equivalent sized tank when they get a little bigger, and as they grow into adults send the second colony to different breeders for ‘new blood’ to keep up with the overall health of the species.

This is what I'm thinking too. It would be good to send some to other breeders, but keeping a small colony of 10 or so would be interesting, and it would be great to see if they all end up female.
Why is nobody talking about the person in your city who was kind enough to lend you roaches? That person was a lifesaver in my opinion. Props to them!

AC answer: To reduce the risk of cannibalism inside a colony of spiders, they have to be well fed and live on a small space together, so they stay accustomed to one another. :)

That's what I commented. We should separate some and raise the others communally so that they don't turn on each other. We could also observe their behavior difference. There would also be no risk for an endangered species such as this one.

Of course, @Exoticslair was the first person I ever contacted when the egg sac was laid and again when the slings were born! He was the one who advised me to use mealworm pieces as their first meal.
If it becomes difficult for you to keep them due to food or other reasons I would maybe give him a few. That way it lessens the burden on you as well as co experiment with him on the community and/or singular tarantula setup.

Name the Colonies home “Mirkwood” as that is the home of the communities spiders in the lord of the rings and those spiders just so happen to be extremely rare as the are the children of “Ungoliant” who is the mother to all spiders. Corrections ungoliant traveled to dungortheb where she mated with other giant spiders and infesting their home one of the spawn who was called shelob then travelled to Mirkwood and made the nest there then further moving onto the outside of Mordor from what I know if I’m wrong correct me. I saw a comment about how it would be cool to make minor colonies of spiders so I thought that naming the main colony “dungortheb” with the mother named Ungoliant and then a minor colony named “Mirkwood” with the mother named “Shelob” tho this multi colony thing probably won’t happen due to the hole canablism thing but just some food for thought.

Female spiders have the ability to store sperm from the males in their epigynum for up to two years depending on the species. This explains how she was able to produce a fertilized egg sac

As far as I know they can store sperm indefinitely, but put it off when molting. Don't say you're wrong since 'up to two years' is about the molt cycle for most species when adult. So, if she molted in AntsCanada's care, that would be prove for parthenogenesis. I've never heard of parthenogenetic tarantulas in 20 years keeping them - but there are scorpions who can do it and they're kinda related to arachnids so never say never :D

I know this was 10 months ago but you should definitely send some off for breeding to help promote genetic diversity regardless of whether they're kept as a colony or not.
Name suggestion: "The Children of Kali" or "Kali's Warriors."
I think that, since this species is native to India, something that honors that heritage would be best! And there's no better namesake for them than Kali, the goddess of both creation and destruction-who is famously depicted as a beautiful deep blue! Kali really suits mom tarantula, and all these spiderlings make for a wonderful legacy.
As for the housing question: My main concern is that the spiders collectively have enough room, as their existing hollow definitely isn't large enough for ~25 full-grown tarantulas. However, the potential to use this unique opportunity for research is invaluable as well.
I know you don't necessarily want to sell any of them, but I actually think selling about 10-15 of them would help the Antiverse thrive in this difficult time, and leave you with a wonderful family to maintain and observe their truly special beauty and behavior.

My main concern with keeping them all in the same enclosure isn't the food, though it is a potential issue, it's that they may not have enough space to live together comfortably. I'd definitely want to see the colony for the sake of science, but I think you should remove some of them just to give the rest more space.

depending on their species they are used to being in clusters like this hence most tarantulas that have burrows live in tight spaces and just wait there. If he sees this we might know if they are used to this behavior.

I did a hike through the rainforest in Costa Rica near Arenal Volcano. On the wall face were all these holes spaced pretty evenly apart. Our guide made it very clear to not brush up or use the wall for support. Those holes were tarantula burrows. There were easily >100 of them. Just waiting for a snack. 😰😰😰😰

@ShinRaPresident since some tarantulas already exhibit parthenogenesis, it is possible. Since human parthenogenesis has never been documented, it doesn't compare well.

Could it also be a possibility she held sperm until she felt safe, like some snakes and fish do. (Also I don’t know if this is done by spider or not as well I’ve only heard of spiders and fish doing it.) So maybe she mated once upon a time and stored the sperm until she was comfortable enough to lay her eggs.

Spiders 100% do this, but most are also able to cross breed. There's a chance his spiders might not be full blooded sapphires but you'll only know when they start getting their colors in.

Some dessert tarantulas hold sperm until conditions are right. Usual rainy season in Mexico and the American southwest. No idea if this is the case.
