I used to be a taxi driver and I picked up Richard Briars to take him to a charity function. I ferried many famous people in my time, but I can honestly say that he was one of the nicest celebrities I ever had ' in the back of my cab'. Charming, humble and a true gentleman. He was a great actor and one of the few who could transfer from screen to stage with ease. His role as Martin in 'Ever Decreasing Circles' was a masterpiece of characterisation by an actor and Richard played it brilliantly.
I had a friend who worked on the glove department in a large department store and she had two old gentlemen approach to look at the gloves. After a while of chatting and looking at the gloves one chose a pair tipped there hat's at her for her help and went on their way, they were Richard Briers and Paul Eddington and she said of them that they were the nicest people she had ever met typical English gentleman.

@@golden.lights.twinkle2329Well, Edington died in the mid-Nineties and some shops, like John Lewis, Selfridge's or even Harrod's would have had a glove department.
A shame no mention of 'ever decreasing circles' - one of the funniest sit coms ever to grace British television. There is a very brief video clip at the end, but Briers' portrayal of Martin and his personal struggles against the chaotic reality of life was superb. I cannot think of a three eighths grub screw without seeing Briers combing the carpet with his fingertips, looking for one.
I quite agree, love that show. Watched it so many times and currently watching the reruns. Never fails to make me laugh out loud. Growing up in the fifties, I remember so many of my parents friends having similarities to Martin, Anne, Howard, Hilda, Paul and others. Watching Howard's character transformation and frightening the life out of Martin in the Snooker episode was hysterical. And who could forget Hilda's line "You'll never believe what Howard did to me in the car park!"
@@DrMoorehen Margot Ledbetter had a great line, actually she had many great lines, one particular that comes to mind is Jerry is on the phone asking about his car, just on the off chance it may be ready. Margot overhears & grabs the phone & tells the person on the other end "there was a time when a promise was a promise & when someone said the job would be done it was honoured" then slams down the phone, "Jerry when you involve me with problem please acquaint me with the facts first!!! Or something similar. A great show, well written & beautifully acted.
He was too old for his sexy wife and condemned her to a life of drudgery and poverty. I hated his character in The Good Life. It was anything but a good life.
He played a sinister role in an episode of New Tricks as a poisoner , but his portrayal of Martin Brice in Ever Decreasing Circles was just fantastic, his envy of Paul played by Peter Egan was a joy to watch.

I remember Richard visiting his aunt who lived in a flat in Wimbledon that was next door to my mothers flat,he always used to say hello seemed a lovely man.
He had an amazing range as an actor which wasn't always acknowledged. I saw him play a villain in a TV detective show, I think it was an episode of 'Morse' and he was unbelievably evil and creepy as a nasty college professor. This was quite surprising considering what a loveable character he was in 'The Good Life'. I also saw him live in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night in the theatre where he played Malvolio who makes a complete fool of himself in relation to his romantic presumptions.
One of his funniest roles was in "If you see God tell him" where he plays a pensioner with brain damage. It was controversial at the time (certainly dark) but I kept the short series on VHS for many years. Adrian Edmundson played his son-in-law.
I worked with Richard on an episode of 'Midsomer Murders'. (Only an extra, not at all famous). He was a lovely man. I asked him if I could take a photo of him and he took my camera, handed it to someone else and asked them to take a picture of us both. ❤
I understood Richard Briers and Terry Thomas were cousins, however distant, but perhaps this isn’t correct. Always enjoy seeing him but must put in a word for his radio performance as Bertie Wooster which was superb. Thank you for downloading this tribute.

When I was much younger I used to love to watch the Good life and I worshipped Richard briers as I thought he was a great and caring husband to Barbara. Now that I am older and wiser I really think he was a selfish and disgraceful man who packed in a good job and made his lovely wife live as a skivvie and slave mucking out the pigs and goats etc or cleaning the filthy oven and wearing rag's and never had a night out in a lovely restaurant etc.
That’s exactly what I thought - I did not see his selfishness until I watched the Good Life again about a year ago. Now I agree with Margot (Penelope Keith). The character was not such a loving husband as I thought when I was young.
