Henri Sorvali is associated with both Finntroll and Moonsorrow, he really is the musical creative force for both bands. He does not play live with either band anymore, but writes the music. He also writes music for video games as his day job. Plus he produces/mixes/masters albums for a ton of bands.
He is also the son of a famous older Finnish musician, Upi Sorvali. If you want to see where some of those touches come from, go look up "Urpo - Teryleeniä".
"Battle of" (slaget om) is when you fight about the area you're at and "battle at" (slaget vid) is just the geographic position of where the battle takes place.
Finntroll is one of those bands that never gets old. I don't listen to much folk metal anymore but this band still gets me every time. I love your comparison with ska. I never thought about that before but I hear it too!
ska and punk have been together since the days of the Clash, so there are actually quite a lot of ska punk bands like for example Operation Ivy, Sublime, Catch 22 and Streetlight Manifesto.
Really fun stuff 😀 I'd say most of the track is drenched with Norse folk. Electric organ is a keyboard. So it depends on what kind of keyboard you're playing whether you can get loads of tambers from it.
I have mainly listened to their earlier albums, but the black metal influences are mainly heard on their first album (Midnattens Widunder). It's mainly the vocal style, but also somewhat in the music on that one, I would call that one a mix of black and folk metal while the ones after that are just folk metal with slight black metal influences. Although I haven't heard their newer stuff, they might have put more black metal in their music later on. Their first album is still my favourite and actually one of the albums that got me more used to black metal (especially the vocals) when I started out discovering metal. An other favourite of mine is their pure acoustic folk EP "Visor Om Slutet". It's very different, but it's still an EP I listen to every once in a while even though I don't really listen to the band any more. Maybe I should check out the couple of releases I have of them again. Their music is always fun (with the exception of the acoustic EP, which is more serious). An other Finish band that reminds me of them, at least the couple of albums I have heard back in the day, is Korpiklaani. They don't have the black metal influences, but if you want a fun folk metal band with the same type of ska/polka rhythms as showcased in Finntroll, look no further.
battle AT blood river rather than OF blood river...i didn't check out the title enough i guess :) i dont know about "Rivfader", his name would be translated to Scratchfather for me but maybe its also translatable to Ripfather, could also be that the word in the swedish that is spoken in finland have a different meaning than the swedish that is spoken here in sweden
Super fun and energetic. I don't know if there's enough meat on the bones here musically to make me think "yes, I have to hear more of this now," but it's like an appetizer in that it has me intrigued to hear what else they do with this bizarre mix of styles.
No way. We've got a song we're working on at the moment about the Battle of Blood River, although ours is regarding the famous Zulu's vs the Pioneers (Dutch) in Southern Africa. From the lyrics, this mentions trolls' so perhaps a different 'blood river'?
oh man, Finntroll is such a fun band to just throw on every now and then and get a load of craziness. The album this song comes from has been on a regular but very long orbit of play for me. Every few years I play it to death for a few weeks, then I'm good for a long time. I don't think Ive listened to anything else by them, and honestly, don't think I need to. But I could be wrong and now I almost want to explore some more
This does come from black metal, there was a very big interest from the onset of the scandinavian scene with folk elements, especially given viking metal grew at the same time and kind of interchangeably ( see Enslaved, who had fingers in the black metal and folk pies). Folkish side projects were also pretty common and this led to some very unintentionally hillarious and cringy moments. Finntroll deserve a fair bit of credit for being one of the first bands to go out and just admit they're not 100% serious. And they do it the best way possible, which is to not come across as a straight up joke band. Like they know what they're doing is pretty damn cheesy, but they commit to it. It also kind of gave way to a whole subset of bands a bit more interested in being the joke than in making fun music with a degree of passion, but that's not really on them. I get the Ska comparison, but what they're doing is actually more akin to Polka. A finnish variany of polka called Humppa, to be precise. The folk credentials come from the main composer who is also the main composer for Moonsorrow, and he's a multi instrumentalist. He plays accordion in Moonsorrow, so fair to assume he does the same here. The guitar player in this recording played for Impaled Nazarene, a band with black metal roots that very openly wore its punk influences on the sleeves ( can't recommend that band on their homophobic and nationalist stance, though.)
Yeah Bathory helped define the black metal sound and then went on to invent viking metal later on, so a lot of black metal artists were influenced to do the same.
I love Finntroll a lot, so fun to listen to. I recommend you the band TrollfesT, a bit similar but with their own style, a mix of metal and Balcanic music.

Indeed and I believe one of those games is Angry Birds. It's hilarious hearing the connection to the more orchestral parts of Finntroll.

This track has lots of influences, but I don't think I hear any Scandinavian folk influences ("Norse folk" is not really a thing). Great track though.
