Back in college (~2001) we played Army up at West Point.
Usually the night before the game we would have the same dinner (grilled chicken, potatoes and green beans), and then later that night we’d get a “snack”. Usually a burger and fries.
But when we played Army, someone went and got a ton of NY-style pizzas. We each got our own, and the next day EVERYBODY was feeling like shit!

The comment about routine is real. By not having to spend time thinking about daily things like what to eat or what to dress, it really takes a lot of stress off the mind and mental strain. This clip was dope, really shows how a vet could help unlock that potential in a rookie by getting them on the right track.

It's interesting hearing about Kirk talk about his routine, as I am the exact same way going about my life in general. From the time I wake up, to when I leave the house, what time I eat my meals. Everything I do is around the clock and I must be on time or something will feel off about my day. But I never really understood why I do it, now I do. It is essential for me to be in this routine so that I can be 100% mentally locked into my work.

Super interesting hearing about this -- not often athletes talk about diet fuck ups/unconventional/frowned upon food habits

  • @workhorsetraining

An NFL athlete eating junk food night before a game actually makes a ton of sense if done correctly. Load up on carbs, fill glycogen stores, flood system with a ton of calories, sodium, and protein to fuel the game. A scoop of brown rice, chicken breast, and broccoli is great for a sedentary average person, but 3 cheeseburgers and a milkshake is gonna provide so much more fuel for the athlete to burn for the insane intensity of an NFL game.

95% of the time, yeah eat clean, healthy food, that’s what your body is made of. But when you need to perform to your maximal capability, you might need to prepare differently. + the mental / emotional effects of eating enjoyable food and having fun can have a massively positive impact on performance.

It’s been like that since high school we would have a banquet night. All the parents would make a dish and we would all just feast. It is odd. Football culture especially in the south it's just different. My coach would be like you You going to run gasers extra gas after practice... It's a hard title but it's our title. You talk about massive contradictions. However, at the same time what they were really doing was pushing us to the absolute limit in feeding us to the absolute limit. Imagine being an offensive lineman. You have to stay after to cut weight. Run gassers. Tomorrow boys remember I don't even know what we called it. 🤷 Meanwhile, myself who is not a professional athlete. Was taking AP courses and after school. It was not a 1-hour practice. It wasn't a 2-hour practice. Sometimes it was three or 4 hours. And every specialty group would have a time that they had to meet or everybody else would have to run again. People do not understand. RBs WRs uppppp whistle. I know if their time was it was 25 seconds. We larges had 40 seconds. It's all relative. It's almost the equivalent of being like all right. Let's do 10 reps of 225. It all means well but back in the day nobody gave a f*** if you died on the field. I mean sure. Would you have a funeral? Of course. Would it be hard? Of course it would be. Luckily our team didn't have to ever go through that however. Many folks in the state that I grew up in did.

As a Vikings fan, I can say his playing is perfectly analogous to the picture of him grilling a handful of years ago. Pristine grill but clearly someone that uses a lot of aluminum foil. He’ll be serviceable, but not the Payton Manning’esk player Falcons fans are hoping for.
