My Rottweiler thought my daughter was her baby when I brought her home from the hospital. Slept next to her all the time when I left the room with her she followed everywhere. When I would go for a walk with her and my daughter she was very aggressive to strangers especially men. Going to the park with other children was fine. She would just sit on alert. Miss her so much.

Thank God the water was freezing cold. That is what saved this toddler. When we get a drowning in the ER without vital signs from this type of scenario, we do not stop resuscitative efforts until there are still no signs of life when temperature is normal. The outcome is more encouraging when a drowning occurs in cold water.

J Carver Thanks for the links. Great to inform the public. I just went over the basics. I remember when in med school watching a doc in charge of resuscitation in a pediatric ER who stopped way too soon. It had a profound effect on me having had the knowledge, but no clout to change the situation.

When I was a kid we had a boxer named Angel who would sit up on our pool shed and watch the backyards. One day the children who lived behind us were left unattended outside and the little girl ended up with a plastic bag over her head (the brother put it on her as a joke or something) and our dog jumped into their backyard and pulled it off. Fun fact: their mother would always complain she hated that our dog was always watching the neighbourhood kids

I love animals so much. What a lot of people don't realize is when someone drowns in cold water, they have a significantly higher chance of being revived with a lot less brain damage, specifically young children. The cold preserves their brain to a certain extent. My dad choked on meat and the food was so stuck, the Heimlich didn't work. They couldn't get food out till they got to hospital 20 minutes later... had to get it out with a tool. He wasn't breathing the whole time. They finally got it out, he went into cardiac arrest and it took 7 minutes to get him back. But after, he was in ICU in a coma for 2 weeks in a constant state of seizures. The doctors said he would never wake up and never recover because too much time passed without oxygen and he suffered an anoxic brain injury. When we took him off oxygen he passed in 45 minutes. I lost my best friend and now he's my guardian angel. If it was a drowning in cold water, we probably could have gotten him back. I'm heartbroken forever. I'm glad that little boy survived. Animals are angels.

Male dogs become mother-like also when there is a baby in the family... We had a male timber wolf/white shepherd hybrid who wouldn't leave my side in my 3rd trimester. He then wouldn't leave baby's side after my daughter was born. It was precious, to say the least... he wanted to groom her daily. One day I was staying alone at my parents house and during the afternoon two guys tried to break in while I was sleeping. My two cats ran to my bedroom and woke me up by walking on my face and lightly scratching my arm, not a single meow. When I woke up I immediately heard noises downstairs and knew it wasn’t my parents cause they went to the beach to have to have a holiday together, I got up and locked the door of my bedroom with the cats inside with me and called the police. The police didn’t get the guys cause they went running as soon as they heard them but they weren’t able to steal anything either because my cats walked and sat their butts on my face.

Wonderful. Dogs are often very protective, and actually cats too despite what one might believe. I know they are unsightly but with small children around you do need a pool fence with a latched gate. That kind of fear and heartache can happen in seconds. Even be careful to monitor plastic wading pools withsupervision. Little ones love to splash. So glad the child is ok. I think that if you own a big-ish dog it is worth training it to react in emergency situations. They can react on instinct but actual training can be literally life saving. I hate it when people don't respect the role of a specialized service animal. They can even detect heart issues, or impending seizures, and know how to call for help.

To everyone saying "just get a fence around your pool" or "just get a pool cover," although, if used properly, they might slow the child's attempts, remember that they're far from being foolproof. There's no substitution for having a curious/determined/bored toddler or child being supervised (which is why I have no idea how this woman thought that letting the child be in a different room than her was a good idea, dogs or no dogs).
Fences can be climbed, broken, or sometimes dug under, gates can be unlocked or the locking mechanism can fail (or again, child can climb it or sometimes even squeeze through gaps that you'd never imagine they could fit through).
Pool covers, locks and latches can fail or not fully engage, child could find an alternate way of unlocking them (or get hold of keys), some leave enough of a gap for kids to get in under them or get something between the cover and the pool wall to make a big enough opening get in.
If I had kids, there'd be absolutely no way that I'd have a large pool like that. Even if the child doesn't die from the drowning, I've seen and worked with a few different children who now have severe, permanent, brain damage from the traumatic brain injury acquired from near drowning accidents. Many die anywhere from a few months to a few decades before dying due to complications.
It's also not just pools! Kids can drown in washing machines, bathtubs, sinks, mop buckets, puddles, toilets, or anything else with water. Although we often don't think about it, water can be dangerous is almost any quantity.

Shelter pets can become your best friend. So plz consider adopting, fostering, volunteering or donating to animal shelters. This is a critical time now since they're overflowing and have to euthanize otherwise healthy animals. Shelter pets provide much luv, companionship & gratitude in return beyond belief. My mom had me with another man, a cheater . They divorced when I was 12, I was heartbroken but happy that my mom survived that abuse. A few years later she found another man. It was an old friend, someone that she could trust. They got married when I was around 14. I was the flower girl and I will never forget the moment they kissed. My mom didn’t trust me to stay by myself from experience, so she called a babysitter. She didn’t know her, but she didn’t have any option. While they were on there honey moon I sensed some wrong. I was in my room with my dogs, and I heard someone taking out a knife. Then I realized the only human there was me and the babysitter. I was shocked in fear I stood there ready to try to do self defense, my dogs were right by my side laying down and they also sensed something was wrong. The babysitter came in acting normal but I saw the knife behind her. Once of my dogs sneaked behind her and used his head to push the knife in her back and later attacked her. The dog had brain damage and that was the time when I called 911. They came over and found the babysitter dead. They rushed the dog to the vet. And my parents were informed about it and were home the next day and she and her husband we’re proud of me and rocky (the dog) and of course the other dogs that attacked. We found out that the babysitter had multiple criminal records. That is the story about how my dogs saved my life:)

It's weird seeing these 2 huge dogs that could probably tear up that baby to shreds in 5 seconds being so protective of the little human. I have a black lab and a 11 month old daughter and sometimes that crosses my mind wondering if my dog could ever hurt her, but I really doubt it. My black lab is extremely protective of the baby, he is always where the baby is, he has been here ever since me and my wife brought the baby from the hospital. But sometimes I do wonder if he could snap one day and attack our daughter, but I hope I am wrong. Do any of you guys with young children and large dogs worry that your dog might snap one day and attack your child?. I can tell you one thing I trust my dog a lot more then I do humans around my daughter.

Aviation Nut normally if a dog has been raised with a child they arent prone to attacking them. mostly will always protect them. however, when it comes to my kids i never trust any animal or human 100% other than myself. always be aware of whats going on and dont leave them alone together for long periods of time. teach your child to always respect boundaries with the dog. as in dont take the dogs toys, blankets, bed, and never mess with a dog while its eating. i hope this eases your mind a bit. have fun raising your child. cherish every moment. they grow soooo fast. mine are 33&34now and i seldom see them because they work all the time.

Yeah I seen some videos where you see kids hitting or jumping on the dog and the parents just sit there and laugh, I can't stand those type of parents. I am amazed how much patience dogs have towards little kids but hitting a dog or jumping on it can turn to tragedy the dog might just out of instinct to protect it's self bite the child, that's why I will always make sure my child respects the dog. Like they say you respect the animal and the animal will respect you. I personally have had dogs all my life, even when my mother brought me from the hospital we had dog. I still remember it was a German Shepherd and I loved that dog to death, still remember being 5 years old and the dog pulling me on a sled down the road, unfortunately he passed away when I was 7, but we got another dog right away because my mom seen that I became extremely depressed when our German Shepard passed away. So I have been around dogs all my life and I don't think I could live without a dog, but it's still always in the back of my head wondering if my dog could harm our child. But for now I have not seen any kind of aggression from him, it's the other way around, he won't let anyone he has not seen before approach the child. So yeah I think I am pretty safe.

There was a dog in the neighborhood walking around without a leash. My boyfriend at the time was walking our dog with my 8 year old daughter. The dog went right for my daughter and tried to bite her. My boyfriend tried pushing her back and starting kicking it. It wouldn’t stop so our dog Dexter lunged at the dog and literally had the dogs neck in his mouth. The owner ran over and apologized and our dog let him go. But it just shows as soon as danger shows your dog is really the most protective.

Not true. Those doors are siting on a runner it makes the door slide very easy with just a feather of a touch. Panic is real. Their minds cant think. Its just going crazy in there. Yes it made me want to slap her to get her out of that panic mode. But it happened. Lots if mothers panic. And nit just first time mom's
I had 5 girls and my 4th girl was sitting and a little boy she was playing with fell on her arm, at that time she was only 5 yrs old. Broke both of her bones in her lower arm. When she came in the house to show me. I panicked, i was screaming in fear fir my child. Her daddy had to slap my face to get me to calm down. I then realised in scaring my baby. I held her all the way to the hospital. Yes it can happen to anyone. Don't judge her. She was watching her son. Children are so unpredictable. She has just looked in in him. And he suddenly disappeared. Panic also freezes your feet to the floor. And you cant move. Until your brain finally clicks.

It's possible. A very well cleaned sliding door would open like butter. I think the issue with the dogs is that they were trying to go forward at the same time which would block the door from sliding due to pressure

In the comments, people are mean and are criticizing the mom, but people suffer from trauma and she did not know what to do. People say she did nothing. That is not true. She jumped in the pool to get the child and she called 911. She probably didn't know CPR. She was so traumatized that she could not relax enough to listen to the 911 operator. It is a good thing the husband came home.

    • @KarleneE

We are empathetic to the panic-stricken mother. But nobody truly knows how they would behave in a crisis situation involving a loved one, until you are IN that situation. Judging her based on what some THINK they would do if it were their son is unfair.

This story is very much like what really happened to my middle son, Joey!!! He was 18 months old, and someone visiting us had left the patio door open and unfortunately had squeezed thru the opening. He saw a ball floating in the pool and fell in! Joey had had swimming lessons several months before this but, as it had been still cold out and the water was still cold enough, that we hadn;t had a chance to remind him of what he had learned!!! Anyway, we got him out of the water and began CPR and called 911 for help!! My baby was blue, with no pulse and no heartbeat. With our CPR we did get a sporadic pulse back but.. nothing else. Shortly after we called 911, they arrived. My home was filled with firefighters, police and Paramedics. He got to the 1st hospital where his seizures began. They lasted for 6 straight hours, until they chemically induced coma, to stop the seizures!!! He was the, placed on the life flight helicopter,to b flown to Miami children's hospital, a 2 hour drive from our home near Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He was at that 1st hospital for 6 long hours, where they tried to prepare us to losing our son to death! Or, if he survived, to him being a totally different child. One who would b, a totally disabled child, who would never be able to walk, talk, feed himself, b basically b almost brain dead!!I began praying, without ceasing, like the Bible teached us to do. I begged the good Lord Jesus, to not take my son! and I was willing to take him in any condition HE wanted , to love him all of his days! After being in a coma for 3 long days, my husband and I both gave our blood for transfusions for our baby, they brought him out of the coma! They had no clue how he would b. When they allowed me to hold him, I sang him one of his favorite songs, which he always said key words in it. Joey was speaking sentences by 18 months. his beautiful turquoise eyes, were only half opened and they didn't know if that was a sign of brain damage. But when I sand that song, he said all the key words right on time!! It was a life-changing moment! I knew he was 100% healed, by The Lord Jesus. An older man, the head of the NICU pulled me aside later on an said to me: I DON'T KNOW WHAT U BELIEVE BUT, THIS SHOULD'NT B HAPPENING. MEDICAL SCIENCE SAYS UR SON SHOULD NOT B LIKE THIS, THAT HE SHOULD B VEEY, VERY BRAIN DAMAGED, FROM THE LENGTH AND STRENGTH OF HIS SEZURES!! THAT THIS, WAS A TOTAL MIRACLE AND THAT FROM THAT DAY ON, WE SHOULD CELEBRATE 2 BIRTHDAYS FOR JOEY. HIS ACTUAL BIRTHDAY AND HIS DROWNING DATE!!! Which we have always done! My beautiful boy, is now 36 yrs old and, absolutely perfect!!! I've told his story many times, always giving the credit, to JESUS!!! Remember Joey's story and, NEVER EVER GIVE UP, WHEN TROUBLE COMES!!! MIRACLES, STILL HAPPEN< EVERYDAY! Much love to u all, from a very grateful MOM!!!
