  • Getting everyone ready for the winter season in PA.
We are using an aquascape 4 output pond aerator for the turtle tubs.
Hoping for a mild winter but we have to be prepared for anything!
    Thanks for watching!

Pennsylvania! No wonder you moved back South. It must get cold there, although I like much about the state.

Tell me more about the turtle enclosure and how you built it, with specifics, and things in there if you don’t mind?

We do have videos on builds to give you a better idea. Please check them out. If you have specific questions we would be happy to answer.

Do you ever have any concerns about predation for your box turtles? We have Crows, Red-shouldered Hawks and herons that often fly over our home--currently, our Eastern Box Turtles have a top on their enclosures--largest is about 4.5" and the smaller two are around 3.5". I can build them a much larger enclosure is I was more sure about predation.
As far as winter predation, do you have rats to worry about while the turtles are in brumation?--we get rats--had large numbers until I started trapping them a few years ago and now leave traps out continuously.

Hey Mike. We had issues with birds in the water tubs so we had to put netting over them. We had fox last year that got in our box turtle enclosure. This year we have a more secure fence and hope they cannot get in. We had electric fencing when we were in North Carolina as the prop was too large to keep every critter out. We never any issues on that property which was unbelievable. The dogs also deter predators but where there is a will there is a way! If you can keep them covered with a lid if the enclosure is small enough it is prob the safest bet. It is always nerve racking! Good luck!

In California…I winterize my turtles by…throwing them in the freezer….to hibernate….jk
